๐ง TypeScript Fixes: Local Database Service
Resolving type constraint issues in the local database upsert method
๐จ The Problem
During development, you encountered a TypeScript error:
apps/singularity/src/app/core/services/local-database.service.ts:504:32:
504 โ return this.upsert('cache', cacheEntry).pipe(
โต ~~~~~~~~~~
'id' is declared here.
261 โ upsert<T extends { id: string }>(storeName: string, data: T): O...
โต ~~
๐ฏ Root Cause
The issue had two parts:
1. Missing id Property
The CacheEntry interface used key instead of id, but the upsert method expected objects with an id property:
// โ CacheEntry interface
interface CacheEntry {
key: string; // upsert expects 'id', not 'key'
value: any;
createdAt: Date;
expiresAt: Date;
}
// โ upsert method constraint
upsert<T extends { id: string }>(storeName: string, data: T)
2. Missing createdAt in Type Constraint
The upsert method tried to access data.createdAt but the type constraint didn't guarantee this property existed:
// โ Inside upsert method
const recordWithTimestamps = {
...data,
createdAt: data.createdAt || new Date() // createdAt not guaranteed to exist
};
โ The Fixes
Fix 1: Cache Entry with ID Compatibility
Updated the cache method to include an id field:
// โ
Fixed cache method
cache(key: string, value: any, ttlSeconds: number = 3600): Observable<boolean> {
const cacheEntry: CacheEntry & { id: string } = {
id: key, // Use key as id for upsert compatibility
key,
value,
createdAt: new Date(),
expiresAt: new Date(Date.now() + ttlSeconds * 1000)
};
return this.upsert('cache', cacheEntry).pipe(
map(() => true),
catchError(() => of(false))
);
}
Fix 2: Updated Type Constraint
Updated the upsert method to include optional createdAt in the type constraint:
// โ
Fixed upsert method signature
upsert<T extends { id: string; createdAt?: Date }>(storeName: string, data: T): Observable<string>
๐งช Verification
After applying the fixes, TypeScript compilation passes successfully:
npx tsc --noEmit --project apps/singularity/tsconfig.app.json
# โ
Exit code: 0 (success)
๐ Impact
What Works Now
โ
Cache operations compile successfully
โ
Type safety maintained
โ
No TypeScript errors in build
โ
Backward compatibility preserved
Benefits
- Type Safety: Proper TypeScript constraints ensure compile-time error detection
- Flexibility: Cache entries can use either
keyoridpatterns - Consistency: All database operations follow the same typing patterns
- Maintainability: Clear type definitions make code easier to understand and modify
๐ง Best Practices Applied
- Intersection Types: Used
CacheEntry & { id: string }to combine interfaces - Optional Properties: Used
createdAt?: Datefor flexible typing - Type Constraints: Properly constrained generic types for safety
- Backward Compatibility: Preserved existing interface without breaking changes
