UNIFIED PROPERTY SYSTEM

Comprehensive guidelines for AI-assisted development within the Editor platform

🔥 Unified Property System - Integration Complete

Overview

We've successfully unified two separate property systems into ONE robust, backend-connected architecture that provides:

✅ Local defaults (instant, no backend required)
✅ Backend sync (AI-powered templates from MongoDB)
✅ Flash persistence (instant cross-tab sync)
✅ Theme system integration (CSS variables)
✅ Usage tracking (AI training data)
✅ Reactive state (Angular signals)

Architecture

Before (Fragmented)

❌ TWO separate systems:

1. widget-builder/property-registry.service.ts
   - Backend integration ✅
   - Flash persistence ✅
   - AI metadata ✅
   - NOT USED ❌

2. widgets/registry/property-registry.service.ts
   - Hardcoded defaults ✅
   - Simple registration ✅
   - USED but limited ❌

After (Unified) ✨

✅ ONE unified system:

widgets/registry/property-registry.service.ts
├── Local defaults (immediate) ✅
├── Backend sync (asynchronous) ✅
├── Flash persistence ✅
├── AI metadata support ✅
├── Theme integration ✅
├── Usage tracking ✅
└── Reactive state (signals) ✅

How It Works

1. Initialization

constructor() {
  // Step 1: Load local defaults IMMEDIATELY (no delay)
  this.registerPropertyGroups(DEFAULT_PROPERTY_GROUPS);

  // Step 2: Sync with backend ASYNCHRONOUSLY (non-blocking)
  this.syncWithBackend();
}

Result: UI works instantly, backend enhances properties when available.

2. Backend Sync

private async syncWithBackend(): Promise<void> {
  // 1. Fetch templates from backend
  const templates = await this.propertiesApi.listTemplates(spaceId);

  // 2. Convert backend PropertyTemplate → local PropertyGroup
  const groups = templates.map(t => this.convertTemplateToGroup(t));

  // 3. Merge with local defaults (backend overrides)
  this.mergeBackendTemplates(templates);

  // 4. Update reactive state
  this._backendSynced.set(true);
}

3. Template Conversion

Backend templates are automatically converted to local property groups:

Backend PropertyTemplate:
{
  id: 'template_typography',
  name: 'Typography',
  category: 'appearance',
  properties: [
    { key: 'fontSize', controlType: 'select', defaultValue: '16px' },
    { key: 'fontWeight', controlType: 'select', defaultValue: 'normal' }
  ]
}

↓ Converted to ↓

Local PropertyGroup:
{
  id: 'template_typography',
  title: 'Typography',
  order: 20, // Based on category
  properties: [
    {
      key: 'fontSize',
      type: 'select',
      getValue: (widget) => widget.properties?.fontSize ?? '16px',
      setValue: (widget, value) => ({ ...widget, properties: { ...widget.properties, fontSize: value } })
    }
  ]
}

Features

🔄 Backend Sync Status (Reactive)

// Component can observe sync status
readonly backendSynced = propertyRegistry.backendSynced(); // signal
readonly syncInProgress = propertyRegistry.syncInProgress(); // signal
readonly lastSyncTime = propertyRegistry.lastSyncTime(); // signal
readonly isReady = propertyRegistry.isReady(); // computed

📊 Usage Tracking (AI Training)

// Automatically track property usage for AI
propertyRegistry.trackPropertyUsage('fontSize', 'button');
// → Sent to backend for AI training

🔄 Force Re-sync

// Manually trigger backend sync
await propertyRegistry.forceSyncWithBackend();

🐛 Debug Info

const debug = propertyRegistry.debug();
console.log(debug);
// {
//   global: [...],
//   byType: { button: [...], text: [...] },
//   backendSynced: true,
//   lastSync: Date(...)
// }

Backend Integration

MongoDB Collections

1. Space Properties (space_{id}.shared_properties)

2. Property Templates (space_{id}.property_templates)

3. Core Properties (gograb-core.core_properties)

API Endpoints

All accessed through PropertiesApiService:

GET  /api/spaces/:spaceId/properties/templates
GET  /api/spaces/:spaceId/properties/templates/widget-type/:type
GET  /api/spaces/:spaceId/properties/templates/ai-context
POST /api/spaces/:spaceId/properties/templates/seed
POST /api/spaces/:spaceId/properties/:propertyId/usage
GET  /api/spaces/:spaceId/properties/core-sync

Property Template Structure

Backend Schema

interface PropertyTemplate {
  id: string;
  name: string;
  description?: string;
  category: PropertyCategory;
  icon?: string;
  properties: PropertyDefinition[];
  widgetTypes?: string[];
  tags?: string[];
  aiSummary?: string;
  examplePrompt?: string;
  metadata: {
    created: string;
    modified: string;
    author: string;
    usageCount: number;
    isBuiltIn: boolean;
  };
}

Local Property Group

interface PropertyGroup {
  id: string;
  title: string;
  icon?: string;
  expanded?: boolean;
  order?: number;
  properties: PropertyDefinition[];
  isVisible?: (widget: Widget, breakpoint?: BreakpointKey) => boolean;
}

Control Type Mapping

Backend types are automatically mapped to local types:

Backend Type Local Type Use Case
text string Text inputs
number number Numeric inputs
boolean boolean Checkboxes/toggles
color color Color pickers
select select Dropdowns
richtext textarea Rich text editors
code textarea Code editors
json textarea JSON editors

Category Order

Templates are ordered by category:

Category Order Description
content 10 Text, labels, values
appearance 20 Colors, fonts, styles
layout 30 Size, spacing, position
behavior 40 Events, interactions
data 50 Data binding, sources
accessibility 60 ARIA, a11y
advanced 70 Complex configurations

Widget Integration

Current Workflow (Unchanged)

Widgets still define property groups locally:

// button-widget-property-groups.ts
export const BUTTON_WIDGET_PROPERTY_GROUPS: PropertyGroup[] = [
  BUTTON_WIDGET_GROUP_CONTENT,
  BUTTON_WIDGET_GROUP_APPEARANCE,
  BUTTON_WIDGET_GROUP_CUSTOM_STYLES,
  // ...
];

Enhanced Workflow (With Backend)

Backend can override or extend local groups:

  1. Local groups registered on initialization
  2. Backend templates fetched asynchronously
  3. Merged with replace: true (backend wins)
  4. Result: Local defaults + backend enhancements

Theme System Integration

Backend properties can reference theme variables:

{
  key: 'backgroundColor',
  themeVariable: '--ux-surface',
  defaultValue: 'var(--ux-surface)'
}

Supported Theme Variables:

AI Metadata

Properties include AI context for intelligent generation:

interface PropertyAIMetadata {
  importance?: 'essential' | 'common' | 'advanced' | 'experimental';
  useCases?: string[];
  recommendedWidgets?: string[];
  sampleValues?: string[];
}

Example:

{
  key: 'fontSize',
  aiMetadata: {
    importance: 'common',
    useCases: ['Text sizing', 'Headings', 'Body text'],
    recommendedWidgets: ['text', 'heading', 'button', 'label'],
    sampleValues: ['14px', '16px', '24px', '32px']
  }
}

Migration Guide

For Existing Widgets

No changes required! Widgets continue to work with local property groups.

Optional enhancements:

  1. Add AI metadata to property definitions
  2. Register templates to backend for sharing
  3. Use theme variables for consistent styling

For New Widgets

Recommended approach:

  1. Define minimal local defaults (for offline/fallback)
  2. Register full template to backend (via API)
  3. Let backend enhance with AI metadata and theme integration

Error Handling

Backend Unavailable

// Service gracefully falls back to local defaults
syncWithBackend() {
  try {
    const templates = await this.propertiesApi.listTemplates(spaceId);
    // Use backend templates
  } catch (error) {
    this.logger.warn('Backend unavailable, using local defaults');
    // Continue with local defaults - NO ERROR
  }
}

Invalid Templates

// Invalid templates are skipped, not crashing
mergeBackendTemplates(templates) {
  for (const template of templates) {
    try {
      const group = this.convertTemplateToGroup(template);
      this.registerPropertyGroup(group);
    } catch (error) {
      this.logger.warn(`Skipping invalid template: ${template.name}`);
      // Continue with other templates
    }
  }
}

Performance

Optimizations

  1. Non-blocking sync: Backend loads asynchronously, doesn't block UI
  2. Lazy loading: Templates loaded on first use
  3. Caching: PropertiesApiService caches responses with shareReplay(1)
  4. Signals: Reactive state updates only when needed
  5. Fire-and-forget: Usage tracking doesn't block UI

Benchmarks

Testing

Unit Tests

describe('PropertyRegistryService', () => {
  it('should load local defaults immediately', () => {
    const service = new PropertyRegistryService();
    expect(service.isReady()).toBe(true);
  });

  it('should sync with backend asynchronously', async () => {
    const service = new PropertyRegistryService();
    await service.forceSyncWithBackend();
    expect(service.backendSynced()).toBe(true);
  });

  it('should gracefully handle backend errors', async () => {
    // Mock API to throw error
    const service = new PropertyRegistryService();
    await service.syncWithBackend();
    // Should still work with local defaults
    expect(service.isReady()).toBe(true);
  });
});

Integration Tests

  1. Backend available: Templates load and merge correctly
  2. Backend unavailable: Falls back to local defaults
  3. Invalid templates: Skipped without crashing
  4. Usage tracking: Fires correctly without blocking

Future Enhancements

Planned Features

  1. Real-time sync: WebSocket updates when templates change
  2. Conflict resolution: Merge strategies for local vs backend changes
  3. Version control: Track template versions
  4. User preferences: Per-user property customization
  5. AI generation: AI suggests properties based on widget context
  6. Template marketplace: Share templates across spaces
