Connection System - Complete Implementation! 🔗✨

Overview

Successfully implemented a complete connection system for the Universal Visual Compositor, enabling users to create visual connections between elements through their control points. This is a major milestone toward creating flowcharts, diagrams, and interconnected visual compositions!

What Was Implemented 🚀

1. Connection Type System 📐

Created comprehensive connection types with support for:

File: libs/universal-visual-compositor/src/lib/models/connection.types.ts

Key Types:

interface Connection {
  id: string;
  sourceElementId: string;
  sourcePointId: string;
  targetElementId: string;
  targetPointId: string;
  style: ConnectionStyle;
  pathType: 'straight' | 'bezier' | 'orthogonal' | 'curved';
  controlPoints?: Point[];
  label?: ConnectionLabel;
  data?: Record<string, any>;
  metadata: { created: Date; modified: Date; name?: string; tags?: string[] };
}

Path Calculation:

function calculateConnectionPath(
  start: Point,
  end: Point,
  pathType,
  controlPoints
): string {
  // Returns SVG path data for different connection types
}

2. Canvas Connection Component 🎨

Created a fully-featured connection rendering component.

Files:

Features:

Visual States:

.canvas-connection {
  &.selected {
    // Blue highlight with pulsing animation
  }

  &.hovered {
    // Lighter blue on hover
  }

  &.animated {
    // Dashed line animation for data flow
  }
}

3. Integration into Compositor Canvas 🖼️

Enhanced the main canvas component to support connections.

File: libs/universal-visual-compositor/src/lib/components/compositor-canvas/compositor-canvas.component.ts

New Inputs:

New Outputs:

New Methods:

getConnectionEndpoints(connection: Connection): { start: Point; end: Point } | null {
  // Calculates absolute positions of connection endpoints
  // Based on element positions and control point relative positions
}

Template Changes:

4. Connection Creation System 🖱️

Implemented interactive connection creation in the demo.

File: apps/gograb-space/src/app/demos/universal-compositor-demo/universal-compositor-demo.component.ts

Connection Creation Flow:

  1. User clicks a control point → Start connection
  2. User clicks another control point → Complete connection
  3. Connection is created with default style (bezier curve with arrow)

Code:

onControlPointClick(data: { elementId: string; pointId: string }): void {
  if (!this.connectionStart) {
    this.connectionStart = data; // Start
  } else {
    if (this.connectionStart.elementId !== data.elementId) {
      this.createConnection(this.connectionStart, data); // Complete
    }
    this.connectionStart = null;
  }
}

Auto-Generation:

private createConnection(start, end): void {
  const newConnection: Connection = {
    id: `conn-${Date.now()}`,
    sourceElementId: start.elementId,
    sourcePointId: start.pointId,
    targetElementId: end.elementId,
    targetPointId: end.pointId,
    style: getDefaultConnectionStyle(), // Gray with arrow
    pathType: 'bezier',
    metadata: { /* ... */ }
  };

  this.saveToHistory(); // Undoable!
  this.connections.update(conns => [...conns, newConnection]);
}

5. Persistence Integration 💾

Connections are automatically persisted using @storage-system.

Storage:

connections = autoFlashState<Connection[]>('universal-compositor/connections', []);
selectedConnectionIds = autoFlashState<string[]>('universal-compositor/selected-connections', []);

What Persists:

6. Smart Deletion 🗑️

Enhanced deletion to handle connections intelligently.

Cascade Deletion:

deleteSelected(): void {
  // Delete elements
  if (selectedElIds.length > 0) {
    this.elements.update(els => els.filter(el => !selectedElIds.includes(el.id)));

    // ALSO delete connections that reference deleted elements
    this.connections.update(conns =>
      conns.filter(c =>
        !selectedElIds.includes(c.sourceElementId) &&
        !selectedElIds.includes(c.targetElementId)
      )
    );
  }

  // Delete connections
  if (selectedConnIds.length > 0) {
    this.deleteSelectedConnections();
  }
}

Smart Cleanup:

7. Demo Connection 🎪

Created a demo connection to showcase the feature.

Connection: Circle → Star

private createDemoConnections(): void {
  if (this.connections().length > 0) return; // Only once

  demoConnections.push({
    id: 'conn-1',
    sourceElementId: 'circle-1',
    sourcePointId: 'circle-1-output', // Right side of circle
    targetElementId: 'star-1',
    targetPointId: 'star-1-input', // Left side of star
    style: getDefaultConnectionStyle(), // Gray with arrow
    pathType: 'bezier',
    metadata: { /* ... */ }
  });
}

Visual Result:

[Blue Circle] ----bezier curve with arrow----> [Golden Star]

User Workflow 🎯

Creating a Connection

  1. Show Control Points

    • Toggle "Show Points" (visible by default)
    • Control points appear on elements
  2. Start Connection

    • Click any control point (output port)
    • Console logs: "Connection started from: {elementId, pointId}"
  3. Complete Connection

    • Click another control point (input port)
    • Connection appears immediately
    • Console logs: "Connection created: {connection}"
  4. Result

    • Bezier curve with arrow
    • Follows elements when moved
    • Persists automatically

Selecting a Connection

  1. Click on any connection line
  2. Connection highlights in blue
  3. Element selection clears
  4. Press Delete to remove

Moving Connected Elements

  1. Drag any connected element
  2. Connections follow automatically
  3. Smooth updates in real-time
  4. No disconnection
