RESIZE SLIDE BUG FIX

Resize Slide Bug Fix - Complete ✅
🔴 Problem: Resize Handles Triggering Drag
Symptoms
When trying to resize elements using edge/center resize handles (top, bottom, left, right), the element would slide/drag around the canvas instead of resizing. This happened because:
- User clicks resize handle
- Resize handle
mousedownevent fires - Event bubbles up to visual-element container
- Visual-element
onMouseDown()also fires - Drag behavior starts simultaneously with resize
- Result: Element moves AND resizes (chaotic behavior)
Root Cause
Event bubbling conflict between resize/rotate handles and drag behavior. Both were listening to mousedown on overlapping DOM elements:
<div class="visual-element" (mousedown)="onMouseDown($event)"> ← Drag starts here
<svg>...</svg>
<lib-resize-handles> ← Resize starts here
<div class="resize-handle" (mousedown)="onHandleMouseDown($event)">
</lib-resize-handles>
</div>
Even though resize handles called event.stopPropagation(), the visual-element's mousedown handler was already bound and would fire.
✅ Solution: Operation State Tracking
Implemented mutual exclusion between drag, resize, and rotate operations using signal-based state flags.
Implementation
1. Added State Signals
File: libs/universal-visual-compositor/src/lib/components/visual-element/visual-element.component.ts
isDragging = signal(false);
isResizingActive = signal(false); // NEW
isRotatingActive = signal(false); // NEW
2. Prevent Drag During Resize/Rotate
onMouseDown(event: MouseEvent): void {
const el = this.element();
// Don't start drag if resizing or rotating is active
if (this.isResizingActive() || this.isRotatingActive()) {
return; // ← KEY FIX: Early exit
}
if (el.behavior.draggable) {
event.stopPropagation();
event.preventDefault();
this.isDragging.set(true);
this.elementMouseDown.emit(event);
}
}
3. Set Flags on Operation Start/End
Resize Operations:
onResizeStart(_event: any): void {
this.isResizingActive.set(true); // Block drag
}
onResizeEnd(): void {
this.isResizingActive.set(false); // Allow drag again
this.elementResizeEnd.emit();
}
Rotate Operations:
onRotateStart(_event: any): void {
this.isRotatingActive.set(true); // Block drag
}
onRotateEnd(): void {
this.isRotatingActive.set(false); // Allow drag again
this.elementRotateEnd.emit();
}
🎯 How It Works
Operation State Machine
IDLE STATE
↓
├→ Drag Started → isDragging = true, blocks resize/rotate
├→ Resize Started → isResizingActive = true, blocks drag
└→ Rotate Started → isRotatingActive = true, blocks drag
↓
OPERATION ACTIVE
↓
└→ Operation Ends → Reset flag
↓
IDLE STATE (ready for next operation)
Resize Flow (Fixed)
- User clicks resize handle (top center, left center, etc.)
onResizeStart()fires →isResizingActive.set(true)- Visual element's
onMouseDown()checks flag → exits early - Only resize happens, no drag interference
- User releases mouse →
onResizeEnd()fires →isResizingActive.set(false) - Ready for next operation
Drag Flow (Still Works)
- User clicks element body (not handle)
onMouseDown()checks flags → both false- Drag starts normally
- Resize/rotate cannot interfere
✅ Benefits
- Precise Control - Each operation works independently
- No Interference - Operations are mutually exclusive
- Clean UX - Handles behave exactly as users expect
- Signal-Based - Reactive, performant, Angular 20 best practice
- Extensible - Easy to add more operations (e.g.,
isScalingActive)
🎓 Key Architectural Pattern: Operation Mutual Exclusion
This is a fundamental pattern for professional design tools:
Problem: Multiple interactive affordances (handles) on same visual object Solution: State machine ensuring only one operation active at a time
Used by:
- Figma (drag vs resize vs rotate vs corner radius edit)
- Adobe Illustrator (select vs direct select vs pen tool)
- Sketch (move vs scale vs rotate vs path edit)
🔧 Testing Checklist
- ✅ Top-center handle resizes vertically (no slide)
- ✅ Bottom-center handle resizes vertically (no slide)
- ✅ Left-center handle resizes horizontally (no slide)
- ✅ Right-center handle resizes horizontally (no slide)
- ✅ Corner handles resize diagonally (no slide)
- ✅ Rotation handle rotates (no drag)
- ✅ Clicking element body still drags normally
- ✅ All operations mutually exclusive
- ✅ State resets properly after each operation
- ✅ No linter errors
