Resize ViewBox Bug - ACTUALLY Fixed! ✅

🔴 The REAL Bug: SVG ViewBox Not Updating

What Was Happening

When you resized an element, it appeared to "slide" or "drag" to a different position instead of cleanly resizing in place.

Root Cause: The SVG viewBox was locked to the original dimensions instead of updating with the current bounds!

The Bug

// OLD (WRONG)
viewBox = computed(() => {
  const el = this.element();
  const originalWidth = el.data?.['originalWidth'] || el.bounds.width;
  const originalHeight = el.data?.['originalHeight'] || el.bounds.height;
  return `0 0 ${originalWidth} ${originalHeight}`;  // ← LOCKED TO ORIGINAL!
});

What This Caused

  1. Element container resizes to new dimensions (e.g., 100x100 → 150x100)
  2. SVG viewBox stays locked at original (100x100)
  3. SVG content inside scales/shifts incorrectly
  4. Visual result: Element appears to "slide" even though position is correct!

Example

Resize from right edge:

✅ The Fix

// NEW (CORRECT)
viewBox = computed(() => {
  const el = this.element();
  // ViewBox should match current bounds to scale SVG properly
  return `0 0 ${el.bounds.width} ${el.bounds.height}`;
});

How It Works Now

  1. Element resizes to new dimensions (100x100 → 150x100)
  2. ViewBox updates to match (0 0 150 100)
  3. SVG content scales proportionally
  4. Shapes maintain their relative positions within the viewBox
  5. Visual result: Clean, professional resize ✅

🎯 Why This Matters

SVG ViewBox Explained

The viewBox defines the coordinate system for SVG content:

<svg width="150" height="100" viewBox="0 0 100 100">
  <!-- Content thinks it's in a 100x100 space, but renders in 150x100 -->
  <!-- Everything stretches by 1.5x horizontally! -->
</svg>

<svg width="150" height="100" viewBox="0 0 150 100">
  <!-- Content knows it's in a 150x100 space -->
  <!-- Everything renders correctly! -->
</svg>

Key Principle: ViewBox should ALWAYS match the element's current bounds!

🔧 Complete Fix Summary

What We Fixed

  1. Resize Handle Logic ✅

    • Changed from storing deltas in bounds.x/y to direct delta calculation
    • Proper separation of size changes vs position changes
    • All 8 handles (n, e, s, w, ne, nw, se, sw) calculate correctly
  2. SVG ViewBox ✅ ← THIS WAS THE CRITICAL FIX

    • Changed from locked original dimensions to dynamic current dimensions
    • ViewBox now updates with every resize
    • SVG content scales proportionally
  3. Demo Component ✅

    • Correctly applies position deltas
    • Keeps bounds.x/y at 0 (element-relative)
    • Applies size changes properly

📊 Files Modified

  1. resize-handles.component.ts

    • Rewrote delta calculation logic
    • Direct calculation instead of temporary bounds
    • Added detailed comments
  2. visual-element.component.ts ← CRITICAL FIX

    • Changed viewBox from originalWidth/Height to bounds.width/height
    • Removed dependency on stored original dimensions
  3. universal-compositor-demo.component.ts

    • Updated to handle new delta-based resize events
    • Ensured bounds.x/y always stay at 0

💡 Key Lesson

The bug wasn't in the coordinate calculations - those were actually correct after our delta-based refactor.

The bug was in the SVG rendering - the viewBox wasn't updating, causing the SVG content to render incorrectly inside the resized container.

This is why it LOOKED like the element was moving - the container was in the right place, but the SVG shapes inside were being scaled/shifted incorrectly.

✨ Result

The Universal Visual Compositor now has professional-grade resize behavior:
