CLAUDE CODE MCP MANUAL SETUP

Documentation for Developers

⚠️ Claude Code MCP - Manual Registration Required

The Missing Step

The .claude/mcp.json file has been created, but Claude Code requires CLI registration to actually use MCP servers.

🚀 Quick Fix (Run This Command)

# Find the Claude CLI
CLAUDE_CLI=$(find ~/.cursor/extensions -name "anthropic.claude-code-*" -type d 2>/dev/null | head -1)/resources/native-binary/claude

# Register the MCP server
$CLAUDE_CLI mcp add --transport stdio --scope project mcp-gograb-ai -- /Users/fguijarro/developer/repos/editor2/MCP/mcp-development-ai/start-server.sh

Or use the absolute path:

~/.cursor/extensions/anthropic.claude-code-2.0.75-darwin-arm64/resources/native-binary/claude mcp add --transport stdio --scope project mcp-gograb-ai -- /Users/fguijarro/developer/repos/editor2/MCP/mcp-development-ai/start-server.sh

📋 What This Does

✅ Verification

After running the command:

  1. Open Claude Code: Cmd+Shift+Escape
  2. Click settings icon (gear icon in Claude Code interface)
  3. Go to "Manage MCP Servers"
  4. You should see mcp-gograb-ai listed (not "failed")

🔧 Alternative: Use Settings JSON

If the CLI command doesn't work, you can also configure MCP servers in VS Code settings:

  1. Open VS Code settings (Cmd+,)
  2. Search for "claude code mcp"
  3. Look for claudeCode.mcpServers setting
  4. Add:
{
  "claudeCode.mcpServers": {
    "mcp-gograb-ai": {
      "command": "/Users/fguijarro/developer/repos/editor2/MCP/mcp-development-ai/start-server.sh",
      "args": [],
      "env": {
        "WORKSPACE_ROOT": "/Users/fguijarro/developer/repos/editor2",
        "CLAUDE_CODE_AGENT": "true",
        "MCP_WORKSPACE": "/Users/fguijarro/developer/repos/editor2"
      }
    }
  }
}

🐛 Troubleshooting

Issue: "nx-mcp" shows as "failed"

That's the NX MCP extension (from the Nx team), not our server. It's separate and unrelated to mcp-gograb-ai.

Issue: Command says "not found"

The Claude CLI might be in a different location. Find it with:

find ~/.cursor/extensions -name "claude" -type f 2>/dev/null | grep "native-binary"

Issue: Permission denied

Make sure the start-server.sh script is executable:

chmod +x /Users/fguijarro/developer/repos/editor2/MCP/mcp-development-ai/start-server.sh

📚 Why This Step Was Missing

Claude Code's README states:

"Powerful agentic features like subagents, custom slash commands, and MCP are supported. (These features work in the VS Code extension, but some can only be configured using the command-line interface)"

This means:

🎯 Next Steps

  1. Run the CLI command above
  2. Reload Cursor window
  3. Open Claude Code
  4. Check "Manage MCP Servers"
  5. Test with /mcp command

Once registered, the MCP server will be available in Claude Code with all 24 tools!
