Why This Works

  1. Separate Config Files:

    • Cursor: ~/.cursor/mcp.json (global, all workspaces)
    • Claude Code: .claude/mcp.json (local, this workspace only)
    • No conflicts possible
  2. Platform Detection:

    • CURSOR_AGENT=true → Cursor platform
    • CLAUDE_CODE_AGENT=true → Claude Code platform
    • Server logs platform for analytics
  3. Shared Learning:

    • Both platforms read/write same database
    • Decisions from Cursor benefit Claude Code
    • Decisions from Claude Code benefit Cursor

🎓 Key Insights

1. Configuration Isolation (CERTAIN)

Insight: Workspace-local configs prevent conflicts with global configs.

Evidence: VS Code extensions use this pattern. .claude/ is workspace-specific, ~/.cursor/ is global.

Impact: Both platforms can have independent configurations without interference.

2. Platform Detection (CERTAIN)

Insight: Environment variables are the cleanest way to detect calling platform.

Evidence: The MCP server already uses this pattern for other platforms.

Impact: Enables platform-specific behavior and analytics.

3. Shared Learning (CERTAIN)

Insight: Multiple platforms can contribute to same database without conflicts.

Evidence: File-based database with unique IDs per decision.

Impact: Cross-platform intelligence - decisions from any platform benefit all platforms.

🐛 Common Issues & Solutions

Issue: MCP server not showing in Claude Code

Solution:

  1. Reload Cursor: Cmd+Shift+P → "Developer: Reload Window"
  2. Verify config: cat .claude/mcp.json
  3. Check paths are absolute (not relative)

Issue: MCP tools return errors

Solution:

  1. Check MCP server logs in Cursor's Output panel
  2. Verify start-server.sh is executable
  3. Test server manually: ./MCP/mcp-development-ai/start-server.sh

Issue: Conflicts with Cursor's MCP

This should never happen because configs are separate. If it does:

  1. Verify .claude/mcp.json is in workspace root (not ~/.cursor/)
  2. Verify Cursor's config is in ~/.cursor/mcp.json
  3. Restart Cursor completely
