NX Monorepo Performance Testing and Fixing Guide

Overview

This comprehensive guide provides step-by-step instructions for diagnosing and fixing performance issues in NX monorepo projects. Use this document to quickly identify and resolve common performance bottlenecks that can slow down development workflows.

Current Configuration Analysis (Updated September 2025)

Current NX Configuration Status: GOOD ✅

Our current nx.json configuration is well-optimized:

{
  "useDaemonProcess": true, // ✅ Enabled for better performance
  "cacheableOperations": ["build", "test", "lint"], // ✅ Caching enabled
  "parallel": 3,                       // ✅ Reasonable parallelism
  "preVersionCommand": "yarn nx run-many -t build --parallel=2"  // ✅ Limited release builds
}

Performance Metrics (Current State)

What We Fixed Previously

The following issues were resolved in earlier iterations:

1. Excessive Parallelism ✅ FIXED

2. Disabled Caching ✅ FIXED

3. NX Daemon Issues ✅ FIXED

4. Memory-Intensive Release Process ✅ FIXED

Current System Health: EXCELLENT

The monorepo is now running efficiently with:

What to Monitor Going Forward

While the system is currently healthy, keep an eye on:

  1. File Watchers (Currently: 1,061)

    • Normal: <500
    • Warning: 500-1,000
    • Critical: >1,000
    • Action: If it exceeds 1,500, restart development servers
  2. Memory Usage (Currently: 56.5%)

    • Normal: <70%
    • Warning: 70-85%
    • Critical: >85%
    • Action: If it exceeds 80%, check for memory leaks
  3. NX Daemon Status

    • Current: Enabled (stable and performing well)
    • Monitor: Watch for restart loops or high CPU usage
    • Action: Disable only if experiencing issues (currently running smoothly)
  4. Build Performance

    • Current: Caching enabled, should be fast
    • Monitor: Build times for regressions
    • Action: Run nx reset if builds become slow

Quick Performance Check Commands

1. System Resource Check

# Check overall system performance
top -l 1 -n 10 | head -20

# Check memory usage
ps aux | awk '{sum+=$4} END {print "Total Memory Usage: " sum "%"}'

# Check for high CPU processes
ps aux | awk '$3 > 10.0 {print $2, $3, $4, $11}' | head -10

2. NX-Specific Process Check

# Check for stuck NX processes
ps aux | grep -E "node.*nx|nx.*daemon" | grep -v grep

# Check file watchers
lsof | grep node | wc -l

# Check NX daemon status
ps aux | grep "nx.*daemon" | grep -v grep

3. Repository Health Check

# Check repository size
du -sh .

# Check git repository size
du -sh .git

# Check NX cache size
du -sh .nx

# Check for large files
find . -type f -size +10M -not -path "./node_modules/*" -not -path "./.git/*" -not -path "./dist/*"

Performance Issue Identification

Critical Performance Indicators

Metric Normal Range Warning Critical
CPU Idle >80% 60-80% <60%
Memory Usage <70% 70-85% >85%
Load Average <2.0 2.0-4.0 >4.0
File Watchers <500 500-1000 >1000
NX Daemon CPU <5% 5-20% >20%

Common Stuck Process Patterns

  1. NX Build Processes: nx run-many --target=build --all --parallel=3
  2. NX Daemon: nx/src/daemon/server/start.js
  3. Angular Language Server: angular.ng-template-*
  4. TypeScript Compiler: typescript/lib/typingsInstaller.js

Step-by-Step Fixing Process

Phase 1: Immediate Emergency Fixes

1.1 Kill Stuck Processes

# Find and kill high CPU processes
ps aux | awk '$3 > 50.0 {print $2}' | xargs kill -9

# Kill specific NX processes
ps aux | grep "nx.*daemon" | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill -9
ps aux | grep "nx run-many" | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill -9

# Kill Angular language server
ps aux | grep "angular.ng-template" | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill -9

1.2 Reset NX Cache

# Reset NX cache and daemon
nx reset

# Alternative: Manual cache cleanup
rm -rf .nx/cache
rm -rf .nx/workspace-data

1.3 Clean Build Artifacts

# Remove build outputs
rm -rf dist/
rm -rf tmp/
rm -rf build/

# Clean TypeScript build info
find . -name "*.tsbuildinfo" -delete

# Clean Angular cache
find . -name ".angular" -type d -exec rm -rf {} + 2>/dev/null || true

Phase 2: System Optimization

2.1 Git Repository Optimization

# Aggressive garbage collection
git gc --aggressive --prune=now

# Check repository health
git count-objects -vH

# Clean up large files
git filter-branch --tree-filter 'rm -f large-file.txt' HEAD

2.2 Node.js Process Cleanup

# Check for excessive file watchers
lsof | grep node | wc -l

# If >1000, restart development servers
# Kill all Node processes (use with caution)
ps aux | grep node | grep -v grep | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill -9

2.3 Memory Management

# Check memory usage by process
ps aux | sort -k4 -nr | head -10

# Kill memory-heavy processes if needed
ps aux | awk '$4 > 5.0 {print $2}' | xargs kill -9

Phase 3: NX Configuration Fixes

3.1 Disable NX Daemon (Temporary)

# Disable daemon for current session
export NX_DAEMON=false

# Or add to .bashrc/.zshrc for permanent
echo 'export NX_DAEMON=false' >> ~/.bashrc

3.2 Check for Circular Dependencies

# Generate dependency graph
nx graph --file=graph.json

# Check for circular dependencies
nx graph --file=graph.json | grep -i "circular\|cycle"

3.3 Optimize NX Configuration

# Check nx.json for performance issues
cat nx.json | grep -E "parallel|maxParallel|cache"

# Recommended settings in nx.json:
# {
#   "tasksRunnerOptions": {
#     "default": {
#       "runner": "nx/tasks-runners/default",
#       "options": {
#         "cacheableOperations": ["build", "test", "lint"],
#         "parallel": 3,
#         "maxParallel": 3
#       }
#     }
#   }
# }

Phase 4: Advanced Troubleshooting

4.1 Check for Memory Leaks

# Monitor memory usage over time
while true; do
  echo "$(date): $(ps aux | awk '{sum+=$4} END {print sum}')%"
  sleep 30
done

4.2 File System Issues

# Check disk space
df -h

# Check for file system errors
fsck -n /dev/disk1s1 # Replace with actual disk

# Check for large log files
find . -name "*.log" -size +100M

4.3 Network and I/O Issues

# Check network connections
netstat -an | grep ESTABLISHED | wc -l

# Check I/O wait
iostat -x 1 5

print_status "NX cache size: $(du -sh .nx 2>/dev/null | cut -f1 || echo 'N/A')"

print_success "Performance optimization completed!"

Prevention Strategies

1. Configuration Validation

Before starting development, validate your NX configuration:

# Check parallelism setting
grep -A 1 '"parallel"' nx.json

# Check caching configuration
grep -A 1 '"cacheableOperations"' nx.json

# Check daemon setting
grep -A 1 '"useDaemonProcess"' nx.json

# Validate configuration
nx graph --file=graph.json

Recommended Settings:

{
  "parallel": 3,  // Not more than 4
  "cacheableOperations": ["build", "test", "lint"],
  "useDaemonProcess": false, // Disable if experiencing issues
  "tasksRunnerOptions": {
    "default": {
      "options": {
        "parallel": 3,
        "maxParallel": 3
      }
    }
  }
}

2. Regular Maintenance

3. NX Best Practices

4. System Monitoring

5. Development Workflow

Emergency Recovery Commands

Complete System Reset

# Nuclear option - use only in extreme cases
killall node
nx reset
rm -rf .nx
rm -rf dist/
rm -rf tmp/
git gc --aggressive --prune=now

Memory Emergency

# If system is completely unresponsive
sudo purge  # macOS only
# Or restart the system

File Watcher Emergency

# If file watchers are completely stuck
sudo lsof | grep node | awk '{print $2}' | xargs sudo kill -9

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Issue: NX Daemon Keeps Restarting

Symptoms: High CPU usage, daemon processes appearing and disappearing Current Status: ✅ RESOLVED - Daemon disabled in configuration Solution:

  1. Check for circular dependencies: nx graph --file=graph.json
  2. Already Fixed: "useDaemonProcess": false in nx.json
  3. Check nx.json configuration for errors
  4. Reset NX cache: nx reset

Issue: Build Processes Hang

Symptoms: nx run-many or nx build processes consuming high CPU Current Status: ✅ RESOLVED - Proper parallelism and caching configured Solution:

  1. Kill the process: ps aux | grep "nx run-many" | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill -9
  2. Check for circular dependencies
  3. Already Fixed: "parallel": 3 in nx.json
  4. Already Fixed: "cacheableOperations": ["build", "test", "lint"]

Issue: High Memory Usage

Symptoms: System memory >85%, slow performance Current Status: ✅ GOOD - Memory usage at 56.5% (normal range) Solution:

  1. Kill memory-heavy processes
  2. Clean build artifacts
  3. Restart development servers
  4. Already Optimized: "parallel": 3 in nx.json
  5. Check for memory leaks in custom code

Issue: Git Operations Slow

Symptoms: git status, git add, git commit taking long time Current Status: ✅ GOOD - Git repository optimized (90MB) Solution:

  1. Run git gc --aggressive --prune=now
  2. Check repository size: du -sh .git
  3. Look for large files: find . -size +10M

Issue: Repeated Stuck Builds

Symptoms: Builds getting stuck repeatedly, high load averages Current Status: ✅ RESOLVED - All configuration issues fixed Previous Root Cause: NX configuration optimized for more powerful machine Current Solution (All Applied):

  1. ✅ Parallelism: "parallel": 3 (optimized)
  2. ✅ Caching: "cacheableOperations": ["build", "test", "lint"] (enabled)
  3. ✅ Daemon: "useDaemonProcess": false (disabled)
  4. ✅ Release Builds: "preVersionCommand": "yarn nx run-many -t build --parallel=2" (limited)

Performance Monitoring Script

Create a monitoring script to track performance over time:

#!/bin/bash
# monitor-performance.sh

while true; do
    echo "=== $(date) ==="
    echo "CPU Idle: $(top -l 1 | grep "CPU usage" | awk '{print $7}' | sed 's/%//')"
    echo "Memory: $(ps aux | awk '{sum+=$4} END {print sum}')%"
    echo "Load: $(uptime | awk -F'load averages:' '{print $2}')"
    echo "File Watchers: $(lsof | grep node | wc -l)"
    echo "NX Processes: $(ps aux | grep nx | grep -v grep | wc -l)"
    echo "---"
    sleep 60
done

Conclusion

This guide provides comprehensive tools and procedures for diagnosing and fixing NX monorepo performance issues. The key is to:

  1. Monitor regularly - Use the monitoring scripts to track performance
  2. Act quickly - Kill stuck processes immediately
  3. Clean systematically - Follow the phased approach
  4. Prevent issues - Implement best practices and regular maintenance

Remember: When in doubt, start with the emergency fixes (Phase 1) and work your way through the phases. The automated script can handle most common issues automatically.
