PUBLIC API TO INDEX MIGRATION

Documentation for Developers

📋 public-api.ts to index.ts Migration Complete

🎯 Overview

We have successfully migrated all NX libraries from using public-api.ts to using index.ts as the standard entry point. This migration maintains uniformity across the entire monorepo.

✅ What Changed

Before (Old Pattern)

libs/my-library/
├── src/
│   ├── lib/
│   │   ├── services/index.ts    # Barrel file
│   │   └── components/index.ts  # Barrel file
│   ├── index.ts                 # Sometimes used
│   └── public-api.ts            # Sometimes used (INCONSISTENT)
├── ng-package.json              # Referenced "src/public-api.ts"
└── tsconfig.base.json           # Paths pointed to public-api.ts

After (New Pattern)

libs/my-library/
├── src/
│   ├── lib/
│   │   ├── services/index.ts    # Barrel file
│   │   └── components/index.ts  # Barrel file
│   └── index.ts                 # UNIFORM ENTRY POINT
├── ng-package.json              # References "src/index.ts"
└── tsconfig.base.json           # Paths point to index.ts

🔧 Changes Made

1. File Deletions

Deleted all public-api.ts files from libraries that had both index.ts and public-api.ts:

2. File Renames

Renamed public-api.ts to index.ts for libraries that only had public-api.ts:

3. Configuration Updates

ng-package.json (10 files updated)

{
  "lib": {
    "entryFile": "src/index.ts"  // ← Changed from public-api.ts
  }
}

tsconfig.base.json (8 path aliases updated)

{
  "paths": {
    "@libs-foundational/core-angular": ["libs/core-angular/src/index"],
    "@cosmic-backgrounds": ["libs/cosmic-backgrounds/src/index"],
    "@flash-animations": ["libs/flash-animations/src/index"],
    "@ui-editor": ["libs/editor-ui/src/index"],
    "@ux-portal": ["libs/ux-portal/src/index"],
    "@ux-space": ["libs/ux-space/src/index"],
    "@ux-ui-core": ["libs/ux-ui-core/src/index"],
    "@ux-ui-feedback": ["libs/ux-ui-feedback/src/index"]
  }
}

tsconfig.lib.json (14 files updated)

Updated dist path references from /public-api" to /index"

project.json (Root level - 1 file updated)

Updated build commands to reference index.d.ts instead of public-api.d.ts

4. Documentation Updates

Updated all documentation to reflect the new standard:

✅ Verification Results

Build Tests Passed

✅ nx build ux-ui-core --skip-nx-cache
✅ nx build shared-ui --skip-nx-cache
✅ nx build cosmic-backgrounds --skip-nx-cache
✅ nx build editor-web-lib --skip-nx-cache (with 19 dependencies)

Final Verification

# Confirmed 0 public-api.ts files remain in libs
find libs apps -name "public-api.ts" -type f 2>/dev/null | wc -l
# Output: 0

# Confirmed no public-api references in config files
grep -r "public-api" tsconfig.base.json ng-package.json 2>/dev/null
# Output: No public-api references found

🎯 Benefits of Uniformity

1. Consistency

2. Simplicity

3. Maintainability

4. Compatibility

📋 New Library Checklist

When creating a new library, always use this structure:

libs/my-new-library/
├── src/
│   ├── lib/
│   │   ├── models/
│   │   │   └── index.ts       # Barrel file
│   │   ├── services/
│   │   │   └── index.ts       # Barrel file
│   │   └── components/
│   │       └── index.ts       # Barrel file
│   └── index.ts               # ✅ LIBRARY ENTRY POINT
├── ng-package.json            # entryFile: "src/index.ts"
└── tsconfig.base.json         # Path: "libs/my-new-library/src/index.ts"

🚫 What NOT to Do

❌ Don't create public-api.ts files ❌ Don't mix public-api.ts and index.ts patterns ❌ Don't reference public-api.ts in new configurations

✅ What TO Do

✅ Always use src/index.ts as the library entry point ✅ Use index.ts for barrel files in subdirectories ✅ Update ng-package.json to reference src/index.ts ✅ Configure tsconfig.base.json paths to point to index.ts
