Container Widget Dynamic Rendering Fix - Proper Solution

✅ Issue Resolved: Full Functionality Restored

This document describes the proper solution to the container widget circular dependency issue that maintains full dynamic widget functionality while eliminating the ɵcmp error.

🎯 User Feedback Addressed

The user correctly identified that the placeholder approach was limiting their system:

"I don't think removing the <lib-widget-host [widget]="childWidget"></lib-widget-host> is a good idea. Our editor-web is extremely intelligent and it dynamically modifies our widgets. Removing this more than likely will introduce/limit our system."

You were absolutely right! The placeholder approach broke the core functionality of your dynamic widget system.

🔧 Compilation Fixes Applied

During implementation, several compilation issues were resolved:

1. TypeScript Type Mismatch

Error: Type 'EditorMode' is not assignable to type 'EditorModeType'

Fix: Added type casting and proper import:

// Added EditorModeType import
import { EditorMode, EditorModeType } from '@libs-foundational/core-models';

// Fixed type mismatch in widget rendering
editorMode: this.editorMode() as EditorModeType,

2. ComponentRef Destroyed Property

Error: Property 'destroyed' does not exist on type 'ComponentRef'

Fix: Replaced with try-catch approach:

private cleanupChildComponents(): void {
  this.childComponentRefs.forEach(ref => {
    if (ref) {
      try {
        ref.destroy();
      } catch (error) {
        // Component already destroyed or error during destruction
        this.logger.warn('Error destroying child component:', error);
      }
    }
  });
  this.childComponentRefs = [];
}

3. Sass Deprecation Warnings

Warning: Sass @import rules are deprecated and will be removed in Dart Sass 3.0.0

Fix: Updated all @import statements to @use:

// Before (deprecated)
@import 'libs/theme-system/src/lib/styles/global.scss';

// After (modern)
@use 'libs/theme-system/src/lib/styles/global.scss';

4. Angular Injection Context Error

Error: NG0203: effect() can only be used within an injection context

Fix: Moved effect() call to constructor:

export class ContainerWidgetComponent implements OnDestroy, AfterViewInit {
  // ... dependencies ...

  constructor() {
    // ✅ DYNAMIC RENDERING: Set up reactive child widget rendering in injection context
    effect(() => {
      const widgets = this.childWidgets();
      untracked(() => {
        // Re-render when child widgets change (only if containers are available)
        if (this.childWidgetContainers) {
          this.renderChildWidgets();
        }
      });
    });
  }

  private setupDynamicChildRendering(): void {
    // Initial render
    this.renderChildWidgets();

    // Watch for changes in ViewChildren containers (after view init)
    this.childWidgetContainers?.changes.pipe(takeUntil(this.destroy$)).subscribe(() => {
      this.renderChildWidgets();
    });
  }
}

Root Cause: effect() requires injection context, but was being called in ngAfterViewInit() which is outside injection context.

5. Multiple Constructor Error

Error: TS2392: Multiple constructor implementations are not allowed

Fix: Merged multiple constructors into a single constructor:

// ❌ BEFORE: Multiple constructors (not allowed)
constructor() { /* dynamic rendering logic */ }
constructor(private elementRef: ElementRef) { /* existing logic */ }

// ✅ AFTER: Single merged constructor
constructor(private elementRef: ElementRef) {
  // ✅ DYNAMIC RENDERING: Set up reactive child widget rendering in injection context
  effect(() => {
    const widgets = this.childWidgets();
    untracked(() => {
      // Re-render when child widgets change (only if containers are available)
      if (this.childWidgetContainers) {
        this.renderChildWidgets();
      }
    });
  });

  // Existing layout effects...
  effect(() => { /* layout logic */ };
  effect(() => { /* widget change logic */ });
}

ngAfterViewInit(): void {
  // ✅ DYNAMIC RENDERING: Initial render and ViewChildren setup (no effect calls)
  this.renderChildWidgets();

  // Watch for changes in ViewChildren containers
  this.childWidgetContainers?.changes.pipe(takeUntil(this.destroy$)).subscribe(() => {
    this.renderChildWidgets();
  });

  // Rest of initialization logic...
}

Root Cause: Added a new constructor without removing the existing one, causing TypeScript compilation error.

🔧 Proper Solution Applied

Approach: Dynamic Component Rendering with ViewContainerRef

Instead of using direct component imports (which cause circular dependency), we now use:

📋 Implementation Details

1. Template: Dynamic Containers

File: libs/widgets/src/lib/components/container-widget/container-widget.component.html

<!-- ✅ RESTORED: Dynamic widget rendering using ViewContainerRef approach -->
@for (childWidget of childWidgets(); track childWidget.id) {
<div
  class="child-widget-container"
  [ngStyle]="getChildLayoutStyles(childWidget)"
  [attr.data-widget-id]="childWidget.id"
  [attr.data-widget-type]="childWidget.type"
  #childWidgetContainer
>
  <!-- Dynamic widget will be rendered here -->
</div>
}

Key Changes:

2. Component: Dynamic Rendering Logic

File: libs/widgets/src/lib/components/container-widget/container-widget.component.ts

// ✅ ENHANCED IMPORTS: Support for dynamic rendering
import {
  ViewChildren,
  ViewContainerRef,
  QueryList,
  ComponentRef,
  Injector,
} from '@angular/core';

export class ContainerWidgetComponent implements OnDestroy, AfterViewInit {
  private readonly widgetRenderer = inject(WidgetRendererService);
  private readonly injector = inject(Injector);

  // ✅ DYNAMIC RENDERING: ViewChildren to capture child widget containers
  @ViewChildren('childWidgetContainer', { read: ViewContainerRef })
  childWidgetContainers!: QueryList<ViewContainerRef>;

  // Store references to dynamically created components
  private childComponentRefs: ComponentRef<any>[] = [];

  ngAfterViewInit(): void {
    // ✅ DYNAMIC RENDERING: Set up child widget rendering after view initialization
    this.setupDynamicChildRendering();
    // ... rest of existing logic
  }

  ngOnDestroy(): void {
    // ✅ CLEANUP: Destroy all dynamic child components
    this.cleanupChildComponents();
    // ... rest of existing cleanup
  }
}

3. Dynamic Rendering Methods

/**
 * Set up dynamic child widget rendering
 */
private setupDynamicChildRendering(): void {
  // Initial render
  this.renderChildWidgets();

  // Watch for changes in child widgets
  effect(() => {
    const widgets = this.childWidgets();
    untracked(() => {
      // Re-render when child widgets change
      this.renderChildWidgets();
    });
  });

  // Watch for changes in ViewChildren containers
  this.childWidgetContainers?.changes.pipe(takeUntil(this.destroy$)).subscribe(() => {
    this.renderChildWidgets();
  });
}

/**
 * Render all child widgets dynamically
 */
private renderChildWidgets(): void {
  if (!this.childWidgetContainers) {
    return;
  }

  // Clean up existing components
  this.cleanupChildComponents();

  const widgets = this.childWidgets();
  const containers = this.childWidgetContainers.toArray();

  // Render each widget in its corresponding container
  widgets.forEach((widget, index) => {
    const container = containers[index];
    if (container && widget) {
      this.renderSingleChildWidget(widget, container);
    }
  });
}

/**
 * Render a single child widget in its container
 */
private renderSingleChildWidget(widget: Widget, container: ViewContainerRef): void {
  try {
    const componentRef = this.widgetRenderer.renderWidget(
      widget,
      container,
      this.injector,
      {
        isSelected: this.selectedIds().includes(widget.id),
        isEditing: this.isWidgetEditing(widget.id),
        isPreview: this.isPreview(),
        zoom: this.zoom(),
        editorMode: this.editorMode(),
        activeBreakpoint: this.activeBreakpoint(),
        childWidgets: this.getNestedChildWidgets(widget.id),
      }
    );

    if (componentRef) {
      // Store reference for cleanup
      this.childComponentRefs.push(componentRef);

      // Set up event forwarding from child widget
      this.setupChildWidgetEvents(componentRef, widget);
    }
  } catch (error) {
    this.logger.error(`Error rendering child widget ${widget.type}:`, error);
  }
}

4. Event Forwarding (Full Functionality Restored)

/**
 * Set up event forwarding from child widgets
 */
private setupChildWidgetEvents(componentRef: ComponentRef<any>, widget: Widget): void {
  const instance = componentRef.instance;

  // Forward ALL widget events to maintain full functionality
  if (instance.widgetChange) {
    instance.widgetChange.subscribe((updatedWidget: Widget) => {
      this.onChildWidgetChange(updatedWidget);
    });
  }

  if (instance.selectWidget) {
    instance.selectWidget.subscribe((selectedWidget: Widget) => {
      this.onSelectChildWidget(selectedWidget);
    });
  }

  if (instance.editWidget) {
    instance.editWidget.subscribe((editedWidget: Widget) => {
      this.onEditChildWidget(editedWidget);
    });
  }

  if (instance.childWidgetsChange) {
    instance.childWidgetsChange.subscribe((childWidgets: Widget[]) => {
      this.onChildWidgetsChange(childWidgets);
    });
  }

  if (instance.buttonClick) {
    instance.buttonClick.subscribe((event: any) => {
      this.onChildButtonClick(event);
    });
  }

  if (instance.widgetMove) {
    instance.widgetMove.subscribe((event: any) => {
      this.onChildWidgetMove(event);
    });
  }

  if (instance.widgetResize) {
    instance.widgetResize.subscribe((event: any) => {
      this.onWidgetResize(event);
    });
  }
}
