π Smart Features
Auto-Detection
- Node Version: Automatically loads
.nvmrcwhen changing directories - Project Type: Detects Nx, Angular, React, Vue projects and enables appropriate completions
- Git Integration: Shows branch, status, and changes in prompt
- Smart Cleanup: Automatically cleans old session history files once per day (see below)
Performance Optimizations
- Lazy Loading: Completions and tools load only when needed
- Smart Caching: Completion cache refreshed only when necessary
- Background Processing: Cleanup tasks run silently in background
- Atomic Locking: Background cleanup uses
mkdiras a POSIX atomic lock to prevent duplicate runs - Glob over Find: History cleanup uses zsh glob patterns instead of recursive
find(instant vs minutes)
Smart History Cleanup (Updated February 2026)
The smart_cleanup_histories function runs once per day in the background to delete .zsh_history_* files older than 30 days. It is designed to be safe with many concurrent shells:
How it works:
- On shell startup,
(smart_cleanup_histories &)runs in background - Function reads
~/.zsh_cleanup_marker- if today's date, returns immediately (fast path) - If cleanup needed, attempts
mkdir ~/.zsh_cleanup_lock- atomic, only one shell wins - Winner iterates session history files via zsh glob (instant, no recursion) β prefer
$ZSH_HISTORY_DIR/.zsh_history_*(.N)when using the layout inzsh-history-directory-migration-spec.md; legacy setups used$HOME/.zsh_history_*in the home root - Deletes files older than 30 days, writes today's date to marker, releases lock
- All other concurrent shells see the lock exists and silently skip
Key design decisions:
- Uses a single-directory glob (e.g.
$ZSH_HISTORY_DIR/.zsh_history_*(.N)) instead offind "$HOME"β only lists that folder, no recursion - Uses
mkdiras a lock because it's atomic on POSIX - prevents the race condition where multiple shells all start cleanup simultaneously - Uses
trapto ensure lock is released even on interrupt - Manual cleanup is available via the
cshcommand
Troubleshooting:
- If cleanup seems stuck, check for a stale lock:
rmdir ~/.zsh_cleanup_lock - If many
findprocesses appear forzsh_history, the old version of the function may have been restored - seezshrc-latest-changes.mdfor the correct implementation
π― Cursor/VS Code Integration
Project Auto-Opening

~/.zshrc.backup.*- Automatic backup of your previous configuration
π Installation of Advanced History Navigation
Option 1: Automated Installation (Recommended)
Run the provided installation script:
cd apps/docs-angular/src/assets/docs/development/
./install-advanced-history.sh
The script will:
- β
Backup your existing
.zshrc - β Add the advanced history navigation to your ZSH configuration
- β Create convenient symlinks
- β Provide detailed next steps
Option 2: Manual Installation
To manually add the enhanced up/down arrow navigation:
Step 1: Add to your .zshrc
Add this line to your ~/.zshrc file:
# Source advanced history navigation
source "/path/to/zsh-advanced-history.zsh"
Step 2: Reload ZSH
source ~/.zshrc
# OR restart your terminal
Testing the New Functionality
You can run the automated test script to verify everything is working:
./test-advanced-history.sh
Or test manually:
# Type part of a command you've used before
git ch
# Press Up arrow to cycle through all matching commands
# Each press shows the next match with [n/total] indicator
# Try adding more letters to refine the search
git che
# Now Up arrow only shows commands matching "git che"
π Advanced History Navigation
How It Works
The enhanced up/down arrow navigation transforms your command line into a powerful search interface:
Example Workflow
# Type the beginning of a command
$ git ch
# Press Up Arrow - cycles through ALL commands that contain "git ch":
$ git checkout main # β First match
$ git cherry-pick abc123 # β Second match (press Up again)
$ git checkout develop # β Third match (press Up again)
$ git check-ignore file.txt # β Fourth match (press Up again)
# Add more letters to narrow down
$ git chec
# Now only shows commands matching "git chec":
$ git checkout main # β Matches "git chec"
$ git check-ignore file.txt # β Also matches "git chec"
Key Features
- Fuzzy Matching: Finds commands containing your typed characters anywhere in the command
- Multi-Match Cycling: Navigate through ALL matching commands, not just one
- Real-time Filtering: Every character instantly refines the search
- Context Aware: Prioritizes recent and frequently used commands
- Seamless Integration: Works exactly like regular typing, no special mode needed
Comparison: Before vs After
Before (Basic History Search):
- Type
git chβ Up arrow shows only the most recentgit ch*command - Limited to commands that START with your typed text
- Only one suggestion at a time
After (Advanced Fuzzy Navigation):
- Type
git chβ Up/down arrows cycle through ALL commands containinggitANDch - Fuzzy matching finds commands with letters anywhere in the command
- Multiple matches available for navigation
- Smart ranking based on usage frequency and recency
π‘ Tips & Best Practices

# Beautiful colored listing with git status
# No npm warnings
# Advanced fuzzy navigation built-in
# Type and navigate through ALL matching commands:
$ git ch[UP] β git checkout main [1/4] β Shows match counter
$ git ch[UP] β git cherry-pick abc123 [2/4] β Next match
$ git ch[UP] β git check-ignore file [3/4] β Another match
$ git ch[UP] β git checkout develop [4/4] β All matches available
# Every letter refines the search:
$ git che[UP] β git checkout main [1/2] β Fewer matches
$ git che[UP] β git check-ignore file [2/2] β Only relevant matches
π Next Steps
- Explore: Try each new command to get familiar
- Customize: Modify the Starship prompt colors in
~/.config/starship.toml - Integrate: Add
.cursor-autofiles to your favorite projects - Share: These configurations can be shared across your development team
π§ Troubleshooting Advanced History Navigation
compinit: ... /usr/local/.../_brew (Apple Silicon)
macOS often puts /usr/local/share/zsh/site-functions on fpath, but Homebrewβs _brew lives under /opt/homebrew. rm ~/.zcompdump alone may not fix it. See Change 4 in zshrc-latest-changes.md (prune fpath before compinit).
Note: ls -lt ~/.zsh/history may break if ls is aliased to eza (-t means something else). Use command ls -lt ~/.zsh/history or eza --sort=modified ~/.zsh/history.
Common Issues
Up/Down arrows not working as expected
- Check key bindings: Run
bindkey | grep "\\[A"to see current up arrow binding - Terminal compatibility: Some terminals use different key codes
- Solution: The configuration includes alternative bindings for different terminals
No matches found when typing
- History too short: The search requires existing history - use your terminal for a while first
- Case sensitivity: Try typing in lowercase - the search is case-insensitive
- Pattern matching: Make sure you're typing characters that exist in your previous commands
Match counter not showing
- RPROMPT conflict: If you have a custom right prompt, it might override the match indicator
- Terminal width: Very narrow terminals might not display the counter
- Solution: The functionality still works without the visual indicator
Performance issues with large history
- Large history files: If you have massive history files (>100k commands), searches might be slow
- Solution: Consider cleaning old history or adjusting the search limit in the configuration
Manual Testing
# Test if the widgets are loaded
zle -l | grep advanced-history
# Test key bindings
bindkey | grep advanced-history
# View current history size
fc -l | wc -l
# Test manual search
fc -ln 1 | grep -i "your-search-term" | head -10
Reverting Changes
If you need to disable the advanced navigation:
# Comment out the source line in .zshrc
sed -i 's/^source.*zsh-advanced-history.zsh/#&/' ~/.zshrc
source ~/.zshrc
