🔐 Advanced Public Access Control
Current Implementation: Option A - Simple Password Protection ✅
Status: Implemented - Simple password-based public access control
When hasAccessToPublic: false is configured for a project, users can still access public documentation but with an additional authentication layer.
How it Works:
{
"name": "GoGrab-Space",
"config": {
"search": {
"hasAccessToPublic": false,
"publicAccessPassword": "client123"
}
}
}
User Experience:
- User is in GoGrab-Space project
- Clicks "📖 Public Documentation" in project switcher
- Gets prompted: "Enter password to access public documentation"
- Password stored in
localStoragefor 24-hour session - Direct navigation to public docs
Implementation Details:
- Password prompt using Angular reactive forms
- Session management via
localStorage - Automatic expiration after 24 hours
- Clean error handling for wrong passwords
Future Options for Enhanced Security
Option B: Session-Based Access Control 🎯
Status: Planned - Advanced session management
Concept: Leverage existing project authentication for public access control.
{
"name": "GoGrab-Space",
"config": {
"search": {
"hasAccessToPublic": false,
"publicAccessMode": "session-based"
}
}
}
How it Would Work:
- User successfully logs into GoGrab-Space project (with project password)
- Session automatically grants access to public documentation
- No additional password required - leverages existing authentication
- Session expires based on project session timeout
- Perfect for client environments where project access = trusted user
Benefits:
- ✅ No additional passwords to remember
- ✅ Leverages existing authentication flow
- ✅ Automatic session management
- ✅ Consistent with project-based security model
Technical Implementation:
// Enhanced AccessService
hasPublicAccessViaSession(projectId: string): boolean {
const isProjectUnlocked = this.isProjectUnlocked(projectId);
const project = this.getProject(projectId);
return isProjectUnlocked && project.config?.search?.publicAccessMode === 'session-based';
}
Option C: URL Structure Obfuscation 🌐
Status: Advanced Concept - Major architectural change
Concept: Move projects with hasAccessToPublic: false to root URL path for better security through obscurity.
Current Structure:
GoGrab-Space: localhost:5010/GoGrab-Space
Public: localhost:5010/getting-started
Proposed Structure (when hasAccessToPublic: false):
GoGrab-Space: localhost:5010/ (becomes root)
Public: localhost:5010/public (moved to subdirectory)
Benefits:
- ✅ URL Obfuscation: Users can't easily guess public URLs
- ✅ Cleaner Experience: Project becomes the "main" app
- ✅ Focus: Forces users to stay within their project scope
- ✅ Professional Appearance: Client sees their project as primary
Challenges:
- ⚠️ Complex Routing: Major changes to Angular routing system
- ⚠️ SEO Impact: Public content less discoverable
- ⚠️ Backup Navigation: Need alternative way to reach public docs
- ⚠️ Multi-Project Conflicts: Only one project can be at root
Technical Implementation Required:
// Dynamic Route Generation
generateRoutesBasedOnProjectConfig(): Routes {
const projects = this.accessService.getRootProjects();
const rootProject = projects.find(p =>
p.config?.search?.hasAccessToPublic === false &&
p.config?.security?.useRootPath === true
);
if (rootProject) {
return [
{ path: '', redirectTo: `/${rootProject.name}`, pathMatch: 'full' },
{ path: 'public', loadComponent: () => PublicDocsComponent },
{ path: `${rootProject.name}`, loadComponent: () => ProjectDocsComponent }
];
}
// Standard routing
return standardRoutes;
}
Configuration Example:
{
"name": "GoGrab-Space",
"config": {
"search": {
"hasAccessToPublic": false
},
"security": {
"useRootPath": true,
"hidePublicFromSwitcher": true
},
"navigation": {
"publicFallbackPath": "/public",
"showPublicBreadcrumb": false
}
}
}
Implementation Priority: Low - Complex architectural change
Recommended Implementation Sequence
✅ Option A: Simple password (Currently Implemented)
- Quick to implement
- Immediate value for basic security needs
- Foundation for more advanced options
🎯 Option B: Session-based access (Next Priority)
- Builds on existing authentication system
- Better UX for authenticated users
- Moderate complexity
🌐 Option C: URL obfuscation (Future Consideration)
- Major architectural change
- Consider only for high-security requirements
- Requires extensive testing and planning
Migration Path
From A to B:
// Simple Migration - Just change the access mode
{
"search": {
"hasAccessToPublic": false,
"publicAccessMode": "session-based" // Changed from "password"
}
}
From B to C:
// Major architectural change
{
"search": {
"hasAccessToPublic": false
},
"security": {
"useRootPath": true // Enables URL obfuscation
}
}
Let's build the future of documentation together! 🚀✨
