Project Switcher toSignal() Fix - FINAL FIX
Fix project switcher display using proper NGXS Observable to Signal conversion
π Project Switcher toSignal() Fix - FINAL FIX
Date: October 28, 2025
Time: 12:50 PM PST
Status: β
FIXED
Purpose: Make project switcher dropdown truly reactive using proper signal conversion
π The Problem (User Caught!)
User Report:
"I think the only place where you are not updating yet, is the currentProject inside: @project-switcher.component.ts"
Screenshot Evidence:
- Dropdown shows: "AI Instructions" β
- Page shows: "Architecture" β
- Sidenav shows: Architecture content β
Only the dropdown wasn't updating!
π Root Cause Analysis
Previous Attempts (All Failed!):
Attempt #1: selectSnapshot in computed β
readonly currentProject = computed(() => {
const project = this.store.selectSnapshot(ProjectSelectionState.currentProjectMetadata);
// β selectSnapshot is NOT reactive!
return project?.name || null;
});
Why it failed: selectSnapshot is a one-time read, not reactive
Attempt #2: Effect with selectSnapshot β
constructor() {
effect(() => {
const project = this.store.selectSnapshot(ProjectSelectionState.currentProjectMetadata);
// β Effect won't re-run because selectSnapshot doesn't create dependency
this._currentProjectName.set(project?.name || null);
});
}
Why it failed: Effects only re-run when tracked signals change. selectSnapshot doesn't create a trackable dependency!
Attempt #3: Manual subscription β οΈ
constructor() {
this.store.select(ProjectSelectionState.currentProjectMetadata).subscribe(project => {
// β οΈ Subscription works, but doesn't integrate with Angular's signal system
// Change detection might not trigger properly
});
}
Why it's problematic: Manual subscription doesn't integrate with Angular's reactive system
β The CORRECT Solution: toSignal()
Angular's Built-in ObservableβSignal Converter
File: apps/docs-angular/src/app/shared/project-switcher/project-switcher.component.ts
Import (Line 2):
import { toSignal } from '@angular/core/rxjs-interop';
Reactive Signal (Lines 47-61):
// π― REACTIVE PROJECT METADATA - Converts NGXS Observable to Signal
private readonly currentProjectMetadata = toSignal(
this.store.select(ProjectSelectionState.currentProjectMetadata),
{ initialValue: null }
);
// π― CURRENT PROJECT NAME - Derived from reactive signal
readonly currentProject = computed(() => {
const project = this.currentProjectMetadata();
if (project) {
console.log(`π― Current Project (reactive signal): ${project.name} (${project.language})`);
return project.name;
}
return null;
});
π How toSignal() Works
The Magic:
// NGXS State (Observable)
store.select(ProjectSelectionState.currentProjectMetadata)
β
// toSignal() converts Observable to Signal
toSignal(observable, { initialValue: null })
β
// Returns a reactive Signal
currentProjectMetadata()
β
// computed() creates derived signal
computed(() => currentProjectMetadata()?.name)
β
// UI automatically updates when signal changes!
Key Benefits:
- Truly Reactive: Signal updates whenever NGXS state changes
- Type-Safe: TypeScript knows the signal type
- Auto-Cleanup: No manual unsubscribe needed
- Change Detection: Integrates perfectly with Angular
- Composable: Can create computed signals from it
π Complete Flow
User Switches Project:
1. User clicks "Architecture" in dropdown
β
2. navigateToProject() called
β
3. store.dispatch(new SelectProject("english/Architecture"))
β
4. NGXS updates ProjectSelectionState
β
5. store.select() Observable emits new value β
β
6. toSignal() updates currentProjectMetadata signal β
β
7. computed() re-evaluates currentProject β
β
8. currentProjectDisplay re-computes β
β
9. Angular change detection runs β
β
10. Dropdown text updates to "Architecture"! β
π§ͺ Testing
Test 1: Project Switcher Display:
Steps:
1. Refresh browser (Cmd+Shift+R)
2. Select "AI Instructions"
3. Dropdown shows: "AI Instructions" β
4. Switch to "Architecture"
5. Check dropdown immediately
Expected Console Output:
π― Project State Changed: Architecture (english)
π― Current Project (reactive signal): Architecture (english)
Expected UI:
- β Dropdown instantly updates to "Architecture"
- β Page title shows "Architecture"
- β Sidenav shows Architecture content
- β Everything in sync!
Test 2: Multiple Rapid Switches:
Steps:
1. Switch to "AI Instructions"
2. Switch to "Architecture"
3. Switch to "Backend Api"
4. Switch to "AI Process"
Expected:
- β Every switch: Dropdown updates instantly
- β Console shows: "π― Current Project (reactive signal): [ProjectName]"
- β No delays, no stale data
- β Always in sync
Test 3: Private Project:
Steps:
1. Switch to "Private"
2. Enter password: test123
3. Check dropdown
Expected:
- β Dropdown shows: "Private"
- β Content loads
- β Everything reactive
π Technical Deep Dive
Why toSignal() is the Right Choice
Comparison:
| Approach | Reactive? | Type-Safe? | Auto-Cleanup? | Integrates with Signals? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
selectSnapshot |
β No | β Yes | β N/A | β No |
select().subscribe() |
β Yes | β Yes | β No | β οΈ Partial |
toSignal() |
β Yes | β Yes | β Yes | β Perfect |
toSignal() Features:
- Automatic Subscription: Subscribes to Observable automatically
- Signal Integration: Returns a proper Angular Signal
- Memory Safety: Unsubscribes when component destroys
- Initial Value: Can provide initial value before Observable emits
- Error Handling: Can handle Observable errors gracefully
When to Use toSignal():
β Use when:
- Converting NGXS/RxJS Observables to Signals
- Need reactive UI updates
- Want automatic cleanup
- Building signal-based reactive chains
β Don't use when:
- Need imperative side effects (use
subscribe) - Need to handle multiple subscriptions differently
- Observable never completes (toSignal handles this fine though)
π― Key Learnings
The Problem with selectSnapshot:
// β WRONG: selectSnapshot is NOT reactive
const value = this.store.selectSnapshot(State.value);
// This is just a one-time read, like:
const value = this.store.getState().value;
The Problem with Effect + selectSnapshot:
// β WRONG: Effect doesn't track selectSnapshot
effect(() => {
const value = this.store.selectSnapshot(State.value);
// Effect won't re-run when state changes!
// selectSnapshot doesn't create a trackable dependency
});
The RIGHT Way:
// β
CORRECT: toSignal creates reactive Signal
private readonly value = toSignal(
this.store.select(State.value),
{ initialValue: null }
);
// Now this computed() will re-run when state changes!
readonly derived = computed(() => {
const v = this.value(); // β
Reactive dependency!
return v ? v.toUpperCase() : '';
});

π Final Testing Instructions
The Definitive Test:
1. Hard refresh browser (Cmd+Shift+R / Ctrl+Shift+F5)
2. Clear console
3. Select any project
4. Watch dropdown text
5. Switch to different project
6. Watch dropdown text IMMEDIATELY update
