Search: Automatic Project Scoping Implementation

Date: October 29, 2025
Time: Evening Session
Status: ✅ COMPLETE
Purpose: Implement automatic project-scoped search with intelligent mode detection based on route

🎯 Problem Statement

User Request:

"Similar to other issues we have had, when we change our project, the search does not update fully. Make sure it does. Also, when we change the project's (via the tabs below the search) - nothing changes. But, I'm thinking about modifying the search behavior. Why? To make each project more performant - I'm thinking keep each project search only its own project (that I think works well right now) AND maybe instead, only applying a global search while we are inside our "select-project" route.

This way, we can get the best from both worlds."

Key Issues:

  1. Search doesn't properly update when switching projects
  2. Global search toggle is confusing and not optimal for UX
  3. Need better performance by keeping search project-scoped by default

✅ Solution Implemented

Core Concept

Automatic Search Scoping Based on Route:

Benefits

  1. Performance: Searching within one project is much faster than searching all projects
  2. Relevance: Users in a specific project want results from that project
  3. Discoverability: When choosing a project, users can search across all to find what they need
  4. Simplicity: No manual toggle needed - it's automatic based on context

🔧 Implementation Details

1. Updated UI - Search Mode Indicator

Removed: Global search toggle button (confusing, unnecessary)
Added: Automatic badge showing current search mode

Code (global-search.component.ts):

<!-- ✨ SEARCH MODE INDICATOR - Show which mode we're in -->
<div class="search-mode-indicator">
  @if (searchService.searchMode() === 'project-filter') {
    <span class="mode-badge global">🌍 All Projects</span>
  } @else {
    <span class="mode-badge local">📁 {{ getCurrentProjectName() }}</span>
  }
</div>

Styling (global-search.component.scss):

.search-mode-indicator {
  display: flex;
  align-items: center;

  .mode-badge {
    padding: 6px 12px;
    border-radius: 10px;
    font-size: 12px;
    font-weight: 600;

    &.global {
      background: linear-gradient(135deg, rgba(59, 130, 246, 0.12) 0%, rgba(139, 92, 246, 0.08) 100%);
      border: 1.5px solid rgba(59, 130, 246, 0.3);
      color: #3b82f6;
    }

    &.local {
      background: linear-gradient(135deg, rgba(16, 185, 129, 0.12) 0%, rgba(5, 150, 105, 0.08) 100%);
      border: 1.5px solid rgba(16, 185, 129, 0.3);
      color: #10b981;
    }
  }
}

2. Project Change Detection

Added: Automatic search clearing when project changes

Code (search.service.ts):

// 🎯 PROJECT-SCOPED: React to project changes from state
effect(() => {
  const project = this.currentProject();
  console.log(`🔍 Project changed to: ${project}, clearing search results`);

  // Clear search results when project changes (user needs to re-search in new project)
  if (this.searchResults().length > 0) {
    this.searchResults.set([]);
    this.searchTerm.set('');
  }

  // Update project order if needed
  const currentOrder = this.projectOrder();
  if (project && project !== 'public' && !currentOrder.includes(project)) {
    this.projectOrder.set([project, ...currentOrder]);
  }
});

3. Search Logic (Already Correct!)

The existing search logic was already correctly implemented:

Project-Scoped Search (performContentSearch):

// 🎯 CRITICAL RULE: Default behavior - ALWAYS scope to current project unless global search is enabled
if (!isGlobalSearchEnabled) {
  if (resultProjectName !== currentProject) {
    // Blocked: not current project and global search disabled
    return false;
  }
  return true; // Show current project results
}

Project Filter Mode (performProjectFilter):

📊 Behavior Matrix

Route Search Mode What It Searches Performance
/select-project 🌍 Global (Project Filter) All project metadata Fast (metadata only)
/Architecture/... 📁 Project-Scoped Only Architecture project Very Fast
/GoGrab-Pulse/... 📁 Project-Scoped Only GoGrab-Pulse project Very Fast
/public/... 📁 Project-Scoped Only public docs Very Fast

🧪 Testing Scenarios

Scenario 1: Search Within Project

  1. Navigate to /Architecture
  2. Open search (Cmd/Ctrl + K)
  3. Type "ecosystem"
  4. Expected: See only results from Architecture project
  5. Indicator: Badge shows "📁 Architecture"

Scenario 2: Search After Project Switch

  1. Navigate to /Architecture
  2. Open search, type "ecosystem"
  3. Switch to /GoGrab-Pulse project
  4. Expected: Search results automatically cleared
  5. Type "artist"
  6. Expected: See only results from GoGrab-Pulse project
  7. Indicator: Badge shows "📁 GoGrab Pulse"

Scenario 3: Search on Project Selection Page

  1. Navigate to /select-project
  2. Open search (Cmd/Ctrl + K)
  3. Type "bit"
  4. Expected: See all projects matching "bit" (e.g., "BitGato")
  5. Indicator: Badge shows "🌍 All Projects"

Scenario 4: Search Mode Changes

  1. Start on /select-project
  2. Indicator: Shows "🌍 All Projects"
  3. Click on a project (e.g., Architecture)
  4. Open search again
  5. Indicator: Now shows "📁 Architecture"
  6. Behavior: Search is now scoped to Architecture

🎨 UI/UX Improvements

⚙️ Configuration

Global Search Config (Already Exists)

Located in docs-folders-config.json:

{
  "globalConfig": {
    "search": {
      "scopeToCurrentProject": true,
      "crossProjectSearch": false,
      "includePrivateInGlobalSearch": false,
      "maxResultsPerProject": 10,
      "enableProjectSwitchingFromSearch": true
    }
  }
}

Current Values (Optimal for new behavior):

No changes needed - existing config already supports the new behavior!

🔄 Search Flow

Content Search Flow (Regular Routes)

User types in search
  ↓
SearchService.performSearch()
  ↓
Detects searchMode = 'content-search'
  ↓
Calls performContentSearch()
  ↓
Filters index by:
  1. Current language
  2. Current project (currentProject())
  3. Access permissions
  ↓
Returns project-scoped results

Project Filter Flow (/select-project)

User types in search
  ↓
SearchService.performSearch()
  ↓
Detects searchMode = 'project-filter'
  ↓
Calls performProjectFilter()
  ↓
Filters projects by:
  1. Current language
  2. Name/description/tags match
  3. Access permissions
  ↓
Returns matching projects
