Search: Auto Re-run on Project Switch Fix

Date: October 29, 2025
Time: Evening Session (Final Fix)
Status: ✅ COMPLETE
Purpose: Fix search to automatically re-run when switching projects and remove conflicting project selector tabs

🐛 Problems Identified

Issue 1: Conflicting Project Selector Tabs

Screenshot Evidence: User showed project selector tabs at bottom of search modal with "GOGRAB-PULSE 2" selected

Problem:

Issue 2: Search Not Updating on Project Switch

Problem:

✅ Solutions Implemented

1. Removed Conflicting Project Selector Tabs

What Was There:

<!-- Project Selector - Only show in content-search mode -->
@if (searchService.allAvailableProjects().length > 1 && searchService.searchMode() === 'content-search') {
  <div class="project-selector">
    <div class="project-selector-header">
      <span class="project-selector-label">Search in:</span>
      <div class="project-selector-actions">
        <button class="project-action-btn" (click)="selectAllProjects()">All</button>
        <button class="project-action-btn" (click)="selectCurrentProjectOnly()">Current</button>
      </div>
    </div>
    <div class="project-chips">
      @for (project of searchService.organizedProjects(); track project) {
        <button class="project-chip" [class.selected]="...">
          <span class="project-chip-name">{{ project }}</span>
          <span class="project-chip-count">{{ getProjectResultCount(project) }}</span>
        </button>
      }
    </div>
  </div>
}

What's There Now:

<!-- 🎯 PROJECT SELECTOR REMOVED: With automatic project scoping, manual project selection is no longer needed.
     Search automatically scopes to current project on regular routes and searches all projects on /select-project. -->
@if (false) {
  <!-- Project selector intentionally hidden - automatic scoping replaces this functionality -->
}

Result: Clean, simple UI without confusing manual controls

2. Auto Re-run Search on Project Switch

Old Behavior (BROKEN):

// 🎯 PROJECT-SCOPED: React to project changes from state
effect(() => {
  const project = this.currentProject();
  console.log(`🔍 Project changed to: ${project}, clearing search results`);

  // ❌ PROBLEM: Clearing searchTerm but not the input field
  if (this.searchResults().length > 0) {
    this.searchResults.set([]);
    this.searchTerm.set(''); // ← Input still has text, but signal is empty!
  }
});

Issues with Old Approach:

  1. Search term cleared but input field kept old text
  2. Signal/input mismatch caused confusion
  3. User forced to re-type search after every switch
  4. Poor UX - search felt "broken"

New Behavior (FIXED):

// 🎯 PROJECT-SCOPED: React to project changes from state
effect(() => {
  const project = this.currentProject();
  console.log(`🔍 Project changed to: ${project}`);

  // 🎯 AUTO RE-SEARCH: If user has an active search, re-run it in the new project context
  const currentSearchTerm = this.searchTerm();
  if (currentSearchTerm && currentSearchTerm.trim()) {
    console.log(`🔄 Re-running search "${currentSearchTerm}" in new project: ${project}`);
    // Small delay to let the project change complete
    setTimeout(() => {
      this.search(currentSearchTerm);
    }, 100);
  } else {
    // No active search - just clear results
    this.searchResults.set([]);
  }
});

Benefits of New Approach:

  1. ✅ Search term preserved across project switches
  2. ✅ Search automatically re-runs in new project context
  3. ✅ Results immediately update to show new project's content
  4. ✅ Seamless UX - feels intelligent and responsive

3. Bound Input Field to Search Term Signal

Old Code:

<input
  #searchInput
  type="text"
  class="search-input"
  [placeholder]="..."
  (input)="onSearchInput($event)"
  ...
>

Problem: Input was uncontrolled - not bound to searchTerm signal

New Code:

<input
  #searchInput
  type="text"
  class="search-input"
  [placeholder]="..."
  [value]="searchService.searchTerm()"  // ← Added value binding
  (input)="onSearchInput($event)"
  ...
>

Result: Input field now stays in perfect sync with searchTerm signal

🎯 User Experience Flow

Scenario: User Searches Across Projects

1. User in GoGrab-Pulse:

- Opens search (Cmd/Ctrl + K)
- Badge shows: "📁 GoGrab Pulse"
- Types: "artist"
- Sees: 5 results from GoGrab-Pulse

2. User Switches to Architecture:

- Clicks Architecture in sidebar
- 🔄 Search automatically re-runs!
- Badge updates: "📁 Architecture"
- Input still shows: "artist"
- Sees: 2 results from Architecture (or "no results")

3. User Switches to Public:

- Clicks public docs link
- 🔄 Search automatically re-runs!
- Badge updates: "📁 Public Docs"
- Input still shows: "artist"
- Sees: Results from public docs

Key Point: User never has to re-type their search! It automatically adapts to each project.

📊 Comparison

Before (Broken)

Action What User Sees What's Wrong
Search "test" in Project A 5 results ✅ Works
Switch to Project B Empty input, no results ❌ Search term lost
Try to search again Input still shows "test" but no results ❌ Signal/input mismatch
Close and reopen search Must re-type "test" ❌ Frustrating!

After (Fixed)

Action What User Sees Why It's Better
Search "test" in Project A 5 results ✅ Works
Switch to Project B Input shows "test", 3 results from Project B ✅ Auto re-ran!
Switch to Project C Input shows "test", 1 result from Project C ✅ Seamless!
Results update instantly No re-typing needed ✅ Smart!

🔧 Technical Details

Signal Synchronization

// Input is now a controlled component
[value]="searchService.searchTerm()"

// Updates happen in both directions:
// 1. User types → onSearchInput() → searchService.search() → searchTerm.set()
// 2. searchTerm changes → [value] binding → input updates

Effect Timing

// Small 100ms delay ensures:
// 1. Project change effect completes
// 2. Search index is ready for new project
// 3. No race conditions between effects
setTimeout(() => {
  this.search(currentSearchTerm);
}, 100);

Preservation Logic

// Only re-search if there's an active search
if (currentSearchTerm && currentSearchTerm.trim()) {
  // Re-run search
} else {
  // Just clear results
}

🧪 Testing

Test Cases

1. Search Persistence Across Projects:

✅ Search "component" in Architecture
✅ Switch to GoGrab-Pulse
✅ Input still shows "component"
✅ Results update to GoGrab-Pulse results
✅ Badge shows "📁 GoGrab Pulse"

2. Empty Search Behavior:

✅ Open search with no term
✅ Switch projects
✅ No auto-search triggered
✅ Results cleared
✅ Badge updates correctly

3. Search Mode Changes:

✅ Search in project (content-search mode)
✅ Navigate to /select-project
✅ Badge changes to "🌍 All Projects"
✅ Search re-runs in project-filter mode
✅ Shows all matching projects

4. Input/Signal Sync:

✅ Type in input → searchTerm updates
✅ Switch project → searchTerm preserved
✅ Input value stays in sync
✅ No ghost text or mismatches
