Search Results: Cross-Project Navigation Fix

Date: October 29, 2025
Time: Evening Session (Critical Fix)
Status: ✅ FIXED
Purpose: Fix content not rendering after selecting search results from different projects

🐛 Problem

User reported that after selecting a search result from global search, the content failed to render. The page was blank except for the navigation.

Screenshot Evidence & Console Logs

URL: localhost:5010/GoGrab-Pulse/artists/bitgato

Key Console Logs:

Router navigation: /GoGrab-Pulse/artists/bitgato
DynamicPageComponent: Path segments: ['GoGrab-Pulse', 'artists', 'bitgato']
Looking for directory: "GoGrab-Pulse" at level 1
Found directory 'GoGrab-Pulse' with 11 items
Looking for directory: "artists" at level 1
Looking for directory: "bitgato" at level 2
Directory 'bitgato' not found or has no items
No children found with combined detection: /GoGrab-Pulse/artists/bitgato
Found file type in manifest: GoGrab-Pulse/artists/bitgato -> mdc
Content is empty for: /GoGrab-Pulse/artists/bitgato - Showing error state

The Issue: The path includes the project name (GoGrab-Pulse), but the system couldn't find the content because:

  1. The project context wasn't switched before navigation
  2. The path included the project name, which shouldn't be in the URL in a project-scoped architecture

🔍 Root Cause Analysis

Problem 1: No Project Switching

When clicking a search result from a different project, the code was directly navigating to the path without switching the project context first.

// ❌ BEFORE: Direct navigation without project switch
selectResult(result: SearchResult): void {
  this.searchService.closeSearch();
  this.router.navigate([result.path]);  // Just navigates directly!
}

Issue: If you're in project "docs-angular-docs" and click a result from "GoGrab-Pulse", the system tries to load the content in the wrong project context.

Problem 2: Project Name in Path

The search index was storing paths with the project name included:

✅ Solution

Enhanced selectResult Method

Added logic to:

  1. Detect cross-project navigation - Compare result project to current project
  2. Switch project context first - Dispatch SelectProject action to update state
  3. Strip project name from path - Remove project name from URL if present
  4. Navigate to cleaned path - Route to the correct path in the new project context

Implementation

async selectResult(result: SearchResult): Promise<void> {
  this.searchService.closeSearch();

  // 🎯 CROSS-PROJECT NAVIGATION: Handle switching to different project if needed
  const resultProjectName = result.projectName || 'public';
  const currentProjectName = this.searchService.currentProject();

  // Get current language
  const currentLang = this.documentationService.currentLanguage();
  const langKey: 'english' | 'spanish' = currentLang === 'es' ? 'spanish' : 'english';

  // Check if we need to switch projects
  if (resultProjectName !== currentProjectName) {
    console.log(`🎯 selectResult: Switching from project "${currentProjectName}" to "${resultProjectName}"`);

    // Construct project ID
    const projectId = `${langKey}/${resultProjectName}`;

    // Dispatch project selection action
    try {
      await this.store.dispatch(new SelectProject(projectId)).toPromise();
      console.log(`✅ selectResult: Project switched to ${projectId}`);
    } catch (error) {
      console.error(`❌ selectResult: Failed to switch project:`, error);
    }

    // Small delay to let project switch complete
    await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 100));
  }

  // 🎯 STRIP PROJECT NAME FROM PATH if it's included
  // Path might be: "/GoGrab-Pulse/artists/bitgato"
  // We need: "/artists/bitgato"
  let navigationPath = result.path;

  // Check if path starts with project name
  if (navigationPath.startsWith(`/${resultProjectName}/`)) {
    navigationPath = navigationPath.substring(`/${resultProjectName}`.length);
    console.log(`🔧 selectResult: Stripped project name from path: "${result.path}" → "${navigationPath}"`);
  }

  // Navigate to the cleaned path
  console.log(`🚀 selectResult: Navigating to: ${navigationPath}`);
  await this.router.navigate([navigationPath]);
}

🎯 Navigation Flow

Before Fix (Broken)

1. User in project: "docs-angular-docs"
2. User searches "bitgato" globally
3. Clicks result from "GoGrab-Pulse" project
4. selectResult() navigates to: /GoGrab-Pulse/artists/bitgato
5. ❌ Project context still "docs-angular-docs"
6. ❌ System looks for content in wrong project
7. ❌ Content not found - blank page

After Fix (Working)

1. User in project: "docs-angular-docs"
2. User searches "bitgato" globally
3. Clicks result from "GoGrab-Pulse" project
4. selectResult() detects cross-project navigation
5. ✅ Dispatch SelectProject("english/GoGrab-Pulse")
6. ✅ Strip project name: "/GoGrab-Pulse/artists/bitgato" → "/artists/bitgato"
7. ✅ Navigate to: /artists/bitgato
8. ✅ Project context now "GoGrab-Pulse"
9. ✅ System loads content from correct project
10. ✅ Content renders successfully!

📁 Files Modified

File: apps/docs-angular/src/app/shared/global-search/global-search.component.ts

Change 1: Added Imports (Line 6-8)

import { Store } from '@ngxs/store';
import { SelectProject } from '../../state/project-selection.state';
import { DocumentationService } from '../../services/documentation.service';

Change 2: Injected Services (Line 199-200)

private readonly store = inject(Store);
private readonly documentationService = inject(DocumentationService);

Change 3: Enhanced selectResult Method (Line 262-306)

🔄 Example Scenarios

Scenario 1: Same Project Navigation

Current Project: "GoGrab-Space"
Click Result: "Firebase Database" (also in "GoGrab-Space")

Flow:
1. Detect: Same project (GoGrab-Space === GoGrab-Space)
2. Skip project switch ✅
3. Path: "/libs-foundational/storage-system/..."
4. Navigate directly ✅
5. Content loads ✅

Scenario 2: Cross-Project Navigation

Current Project: "docs-angular-docs"
Click Result: "BitGato" (in "GoGrab-Pulse")

Flow:
1. Detect: Different project (docs-angular-docs !== GoGrab-Pulse)
2. Switch to "english/GoGrab-Pulse" ✅
3. Path: "/GoGrab-Pulse/artists/bitgato"
4. Strip: → "/artists/bitgato" ✅
5. Navigate to "/artists/bitgato" ✅
6. Content loads in GoGrab-Pulse context ✅

Scenario 3: Public Project Result

Current Project: "GoGrab-Space"
Click Result: "Getting Started" (in "public")

Flow:
1. Detect: Different project (GoGrab-Space !== public)
2. Switch to "english/public" ✅
3. Path: "/getting-started"
4. No stripping needed ✅
5. Navigate to "/getting-started" ✅
6. Content loads in public context ✅

🧪 Testing Scenarios

Test 1: Cross-Project Search Result

1. Navigate to /select-project
2. Search "bitgato"
3. Click "BitGato" result (GoGrab-Pulse)
4. ✅ Project switches to GoGrab-Pulse
5. ✅ URL becomes: /artists/bitgato
6. ✅ Content renders correctly

Test 2: Same Project Result

1. In GoGrab-Space project
2. Search "firebase"
3. Click "Firebase Database" result
4. ✅ No project switch (already in GoGrab-Space)
5. ✅ Content loads immediately

Test 3: Console Logs Verification

Expected Console Output:
🎯 selectResult: Switching from project "docs-angular-docs" to "GoGrab-Pulse"
✅ selectResult: Project switched to english/GoGrab-Pulse
🔧 selectResult: Stripped project name from path: "/GoGrab-Pulse/artists/bitgato" → "/artists/bitgato"
🚀 selectResult: Navigating to: /artists/bitgato

✅ Verification Checklist
