Code Generation Improvements - Session 40.3

Overview

This document outlines the improvements made to the AI module code generator to align with gograb-modules patterns and ensure seamless integration with the platform builder.

Key Improvements

1. Modern Angular Patterns (Signals & inject())

Before (Old Pattern):

@Component({...})
export class MyComponent {
  @Input() data!: unknown;
  @Output() changed = new EventEmitter<unknown>();
}

After (Modern Pattern):

@Component({...})
export class MyComponent implements OnInit {
  private readonly logger = inject(LoggerService).child({ source: 'MyComponent' });

  // Widget system inputs (required for grid integration)
  readonly widgetId = input<string>('');
  readonly widgetConfig = input<ResolvedWidgetConfig>();
  readonly title = input<string>('My Component');

  // Component inputs (signal-based)
  readonly data = input<any>(undefined);

  // Component outputs (signal-based)
  readonly changed = output<any>();

  // Component state
  readonly loading = signal<boolean>(false);
  readonly error = signal<string | null>(null);

  ngOnInit(): void {
    this.logger.debug('Component initialized', { widgetId: this.widgetId() });
  }
}

Benefits:

2. Type Safety (any vs unknown)

Before:

export interface CreateItemInput {
  status: unknown;
  tags?: unknown[];
}

export interface CreateItemOutput {
  success: boolean;
  data?: unknown;
  error?: string;
}

catchError(error => {
  return of({ success: false, error: error.message }); // ❌ error is unknown
})

After:

export interface CreateItemInput {
  status: string; // ✅ Specific type
  tags?: string[]; // ✅ Typed array
}

export interface CreateItemOutput {
  success: boolean;
  data?: any; // ✅ any is acceptable for generic data
  error?: string;
}

catchError((error: unknown) => {
  const errorMessage = error instanceof Error ? error.message : String(error);
  return of({ success: false, error: errorMessage });
})

Benefits:

3. Widget System Integration

All generated embeddable components now include:

// Widget system inputs - required for grid integration
readonly widgetId = input<string>('');
readonly widgetConfig = input<ResolvedWidgetConfig>();
readonly title = input<string>('Component Title');

This ensures generated components can be:

4. Module Registration & Discovery

Flow After Generation:

1. Backend generates module files → modules/{category}/{moduleId}/
2. Frontend receives manifest via SSE
3. Frontend registers manifest with ModuleRegistryService
4. Frontend broadcasts module:tree:update event
5. All tools (modular-universe, unified-builder) refresh their palettes
6. Module appears in "Building Blocks" immediately

Key Services:

5. State Persistence

Before:

After:

// Persist on completion
private persistGenerationState(): void {
  const state = {
    mode: 'complete',
    manifest: this.generatedManifest(),
    modulesGenerated: this.modulesGenerated(),
    timestamp: Date.now()
  };
  sessionStorage.setItem(this.GENERATION_STATE_KEY, JSON.stringify(state));
}

// Restore on init
private restoreGenerationState(): void {
  const savedState = sessionStorage.getItem(this.GENERATION_STATE_KEY);
  if (savedState) {
    const state = JSON.parse(savedState);
    if (Date.now() - state.timestamp < 3600000) { // 1 hour
      this.mode.set('complete');
      this.workflowState.setRestoredManifest(state.manifest);
    }
  }
}

6. Manifest Structure Detection

The frontend now handles two types of manifests:

Type 1: Platform Manifest (Multiple Modules)

{
  "id": "restaurant-platform",
  "name": "Restaurant Platform",
  "navigation": {
    "menuItems": [...]
  },
  "metadata": {
    "generatedModules": ["menu-management", "order-management"]
  }
}

Type 2: Individual Module Manifest (Single Module)

{
  "id": "complete-restaurant",
  "name": "Complete Restaurant",
  "routes": [...],
  "publicActions": [...],
  "embeddableComponents": [...]
}

The platformSummary computed signal now detects which type and extracts modules accordingly.

Comparison with gograb-modules

gograb-modules Pattern:

@ModuleDecorator({
  id: 'user-management',
  repositories: [UserRepository, RoleRepository],
  permissions: [...],
  navigation: { menuItems: [...] }
})
@Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' })
export class UserManagementModule implements BrowserModuleContract {
  readonly manifest: ModuleManifest = {
    embeddableComponents: [{
      id: 'users:list-widget',
      componentType: UserListWidgetComponent, // ✅ Actual component class
      inputs: [
        ActionParameterBuilder.number('limit')
          .defaultValue(5)
          .min(1)
          .max(50)
          .build()
      ]
    }],
    publicActions: [
      CreateUserAction, // ✅ Actual action class
      UpdateUserAction,
      DeleteUserAction
    ]
  };
}

Our Generated Pattern (Now Aligned):

// Generated manifest (matches structure)
export const CompleteRestaurantManifest: ModuleManifest = {
  id: 'complete-restaurant',
  publicActions: [...], // ✅ Action metadata
  embeddableComponents: [...], // ✅ Component metadata
  dependencies: [
    '@libs-core/module-base',
    '@libs-core/log-system',
    '@libs-core/event-system'
  ]
};

// Generated components use modern patterns
@Component({...})
export class ItemListComponent implements OnInit {
  private readonly logger = inject(LoggerService).child({...});
  readonly widgetId = input<string>('');
  readonly widgetConfig = input<ResolvedWidgetConfig>();
  // ... signals and outputs
}

Testing Checklist

Next Steps

  1. Backend Workflow Enhancement

    • Return richer manifest with navigation structure
    • Include entity metadata in manifest
    • Add module preview data
  2. Component Templates
