Dashboard Default Route Fix
Fixed empty dashboard by adding default redirect route under spaceSlug
๐ Dashboard Default Route Fix
Date: October 29, 2025
Status: โ
COMPLETE
Purpose: Fix empty dashboard when navigating to :spaceSlug root
๐ The Problem
User Report:
"Now even the dashboard is empty (the one under our spaceSlug)"
Root Cause:
After the navigation reorganization, when users navigated to /:spaceSlug (e.g., /my-space), the page was empty because there was no default child route to redirect to the dashboard.
The :spaceSlug route had these children:
{
path: ':spaceSlug',
children: [
{ path: 'dashboard', ... }, // /:spaceSlug/dashboard
{ path: 'universe/create', ... }, // /:spaceSlug/universe/create
{ path: 'ux-test', ... }, // /:spaceSlug/ux-test
// ...
]
}
Missing: A default empty path '' to redirect to 'dashboard'
Result: When navigating to /:spaceSlug, Angular didn't know what component to render, so the page was empty.
โ The Solution
Added Default Redirect Route
File: apps/gograb-space/src/app/app.routes.ts
Added (Lines 103-108):
{
path: ':spaceSlug',
children: [
// โ
NEW: Default route - redirect to dashboard
{
path: '',
redirectTo: 'dashboard',
pathMatch: 'full'
},
// Static routes
{
path: 'dashboard',
loadComponent: () => import('./g-space-dashboard/g-space-dashboard.component').then(m => m.GSpaceDashboardComponent),
// ...
},
// ...
]
}
๐ How It Works Now
Navigation Flow:
User navigates to: /my-space
โ
Angular matches: /:spaceSlug (spaceSlug = "my-space")
โ
Loads: AppShellComponent (with sidebar, header, etc.)
โ
Looks for child route: '' (empty path)
โ
Finds default route: redirectTo: 'dashboard'
โ
Redirects to: /my-space/dashboard
โ
Loads: GSpaceDashboardComponent โ
โ
Dashboard content displays! โ
URL Behavior:
Before Fix โ:
Navigate to: /my-space
Result: Empty page (no component loaded)
URL stays: /my-space
After Fix โ :
Navigate to: /my-space
Result: Redirects to dashboard
URL becomes: /my-space/dashboard
Dashboard loads! โ
๐ฏ Route Structure
Complete :spaceSlug Route Configuration:
{
path: ':spaceSlug', // Space-first routing
loadComponent: () => AppShellComponent,
canActivate: [authGuard, spaceGuard],
resolve: { space: spaceResolver },
children: [
// ๐ DEFAULT: Redirect to dashboard
{
path: '',
redirectTo: 'dashboard',
pathMatch: 'full'
},
// ๐ DASHBOARD: Main landing page for each space
{
path: 'dashboard',
loadComponent: () => GSpaceDashboardComponent,
title: 'Dashboard',
data: {
icon: 'fas fa-tachometer-alt',
description: 'Central hub and overview',
category: 'core',
order: 1
}
},
// ๐ UNIVERSE: Create new universe
{ path: 'universe/create', ... },
// ๐จ UX TEST: Component showcase
{ path: 'ux-test', ... },
// ๐ง OTHER ROUTES: Editor, Space Map, Singularity, etc.
// (Dynamically injected by RouteRegistrationService)
]
}
๐ Before vs After
Before Fix โ:
URL: /my-space
โ
AppShell Loads (sidebar, header visible)
โ
Main Content Area: EMPTY โ
โ
User sees: Just the shell, no content
After Fix โ :
URL: /my-space
โ
Redirects to: /my-space/dashboard
โ
AppShell Loads (sidebar, header visible)
โ
Dashboard Loads (main content) โ
โ
User sees: Full dashboard with widgets, stats, etc.
๐ฏ Benefits
- Better UX - Users immediately see the dashboard instead of a blank page
- Consistent Behavior - Root space URL always goes to dashboard
- Clear Navigation - Dashboard is the natural "home" for each space
- No Breaking Changes - All existing routes still work
- Standard Pattern - Follows Angular best practices for child routes
๐งช Testing
Test Case 1: Direct Navigation to Space
1. Navigate to: http://localhost:4200/my-space
2. Expected: Redirects to /my-space/dashboard
3. Expected: Dashboard content loads
4. Expected: Sidebar shows "Dashboard" as active
Test Case 2: Clicking Logo/Home
1. On any page within /my-space/*
2. Click logo or "Home" button
3. Expected: Navigates to /my-space
4. Expected: Redirects to /my-space/dashboard
5. Expected: Dashboard loads
Test Case 3: Direct Dashboard Navigation
1. Navigate to: http://localhost:4200/my-space/dashboard
2. Expected: Dashboard loads directly
3. Expected: No redirect needed
Test Case 4: Other Routes Still Work
1. Navigate to: /my-space/ux-test
2. Expected: UX Test page loads
3. Navigate to: /my-space
4. Expected: Redirects to dashboard
๐ Related Changes
This fix is related to:
-
- Navigation structure was reorganized
- This uncovered the missing default route
-
- Fixed spaceSlug routing architecture
- All routes now respect spaceSlug pattern
๐ Design Decision
Why Redirect to Dashboard?
Options Considered:
โ Redirect to dashboard (chosen)
- Natural "home" for each space
- Users expect to see overview/stats
- Consistent with most web apps
โ Show empty state with "Select a feature"
- Extra click required
- Not user-friendly
- Adds unnecessary step
โ Redirect to last visited page
- Complex state management
- Unpredictable behavior
- Overkill for this use case
Decision: Redirect to dashboard as the default landing page.
โ๏ธ Technical Details
pathMatch: 'full'
{
path: '',
redirectTo: 'dashboard',
pathMatch: 'full' // โ
Required for empty path redirects
}
Why pathMatch: 'full'?
- Without it, the redirect would match ANY path starting with empty string
- Would break all other child routes
fullensures it only matches exactly''(empty path)
Route Order Matters
children: [
// โ
CORRECT: Default route FIRST
{ path: '', redirectTo: 'dashboard', pathMatch: 'full' },
{ path: 'dashboard', ... },
{ path: 'other-route', ... },
]
// โ WRONG: Default route last (works, but less clear)
children: [
{ path: 'dashboard', ... },
{ path: 'other-route', ... },
{ path: '', redirectTo: 'dashboard', pathMatch: 'full' },
]
Best Practice: Put default route first for clarity.

๐ Key Takeaways
- Always provide a default child route when using nested routing
- Empty path
''withredirectTois the standard pattern pathMatch: 'full'is required for empty path redirects- Dashboard as default is a common UX pattern for admin/app interfaces
โ Summary
Problem: Empty page when navigating to /:spaceSlug
Cause: No default child route defined
Solution: Added empty path redirect to dashboard
Result: Dashboard now loads automatically! โ
