Multi-Browser Layout Sync Fix
How we fixed universe layout changes not syncing across browsers
🔄 Multi-Browser Layout Sync - Final Fix
🐛 The Problem
User Report: "compare screenshots. Still not syncing."
- Browser 1: Shows "2 sections" (Main Section + Section 2)
- Browser 2: Shows "1 section" (only Main Section)
- Issue: Layout changes (add/remove/resize sections) were saving locally but NOT syncing to MongoDB
- Result: Different browsers showed different layout states for the same universe
🔍 Root Cause Analysis
Issue #1: Partial Universe Object Sync
Location: grid-canvas.component.ts → saveLayoutConfiguration()
Problem Code:
// ❌ WRONG: Syncing partial universe object
await this.syncEngine.write(
`universe_${this.universeId}`,
{
id: this.universeId,
layout: this.layoutConfig(),
updatedAt: new Date().toISOString()
},
'universe'
);
Why It Failed:
- Backend's
updateUniverse()expects the FULL universe object with all properties:id,spaceId,name,slug,descriptiondeploymentStatus,deployedUrl,galaxyIdscreatedAt,updatedAt, etc.
- Sending only
{ id, layout, updatedAt }would overwrite the entire universe document in MongoDB with incomplete data - MongoDB
updateOnewith{ $set: ...universeData }replaces all fields
Issue #2: Missing Full Universe Load
The component was NOT loading the full universe from storage before syncing, so it couldn't merge the layout changes with existing universe data.
✅ The Fix
Updated saveLayoutConfiguration() Method
File: libs/libs-structural/modular-universe/src/lib/components/grid-canvas/grid-canvas.component.ts (lines 484-532)
Fixed Code:
private async saveLayoutConfiguration(): Promise<void> {
try {
const key = `modular-universe/layout/${this.universeId}/${this.moduleType}`;
// 1️⃣ Save layout config locally first (offline-first)
await this.storage.put(key, this.layoutConfig());
// 2️⃣ Queue sync to MongoDB via SyncEngine
if (this.universeId) {
const universeKey = `universe_${this.universeId}`;
// 3️⃣ Load the FULL universe object from storage
const existingUniverse = await this.storage.get<any>(universeKey);
if (existingUniverse) {
// 4️⃣ Merge the layout into the full universe object
const updatedUniverse = {
...existingUniverse, // Keep ALL existing universe properties
layout: this.layoutConfig(), // Update ONLY the layout
updatedAt: new Date().toISOString()
};
// 5️⃣ Write the FULL universe object to trigger sync
await this.syncEngine.write(
universeKey,
updatedUniverse, // ✅ Full object with all properties
'universe'
);
this.logger.info('Layout saved and queued for sync', {
universeId: this.universeId,
layoutType: this.layoutConfig().type,
sections: this.layoutConfig().sections.length
});
} else {
this.logger.warn('Cannot sync layout: universe not found in storage', {
universeKey,
universeId: this.universeId
});
}
}
} catch (err) {
const errorMessage = err instanceof Error ? err.message : 'Unknown error';
this.logger.error('Failed to save layout configuration', {
error: errorMessage
});
}
}
🔄 How It Works Now
Sync Flow (Offline-First + MongoDB Sync)
User clicks "Add Section" in Universe Builder
↓
addSection() called (grid-canvas.component.ts line 267)
↓
Updates layoutConfig signal (line 330)
↓
Calls saveLayoutConfiguration() (line 332)
↓
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ 1️⃣ Save layout locally (instant!) │
│ storage.put('layout/universe_123', {...})│
└─────────────────────────────────────────────┘
↓
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ 2️⃣ Load full universe from storage │
│ const universe = await storage.get(...) │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────┘
↓
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ 3️⃣ Merge layout into full universe object │
│ { ...existingUniverse, layout: {...} } │

↓
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ 4️⃣ Queue sync via SyncEngine │
│ syncEngine.write('universe_123', full) │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────┘
↓
SyncEngine syncs to MongoDB in background (< 10s)
↓
Backend receives FULL universe object with layout
↓
MongoDB updates universe document

Other browsers see new layout within 10 seconds!
📋 Testing Checklist
✅ Step 1: Clear Previous State
# In Browser 1 Console:
localStorage.clear();
location.reload();
# In Browser 2 Console:
localStorage.clear();
location.reload();
✅ Step 2: Open Universe Builder in Both Browsers
http://localhost:5200/space/chrome-space-1/modular-universe/universe/universe_1763427157418
✅ Step 3: Verify Initial State Matches
- Both browsers should show the same number of sections
- Both browsers should show the same layout type (Flexbox/Grid)
✅ Step 4: Make Changes in Browser 1
- Click "Add" mode button (green)
- Click down arrow to add a new section
- Expected Console Output:
[GridCanvasComponent] Layout saved and queued for sync ↓ sections: 3 (or whatever count) [SyncEngine] 📤 Calling SpaceApiService.updateUniverse [SyncEngine] ✅ Universe synced to backend: universe_1763427157418
✅ Step 5: Verify MongoDB Update
- Check MongoDB →
gograb_spaces→spacescollection - Find your space document
- Verify
universeIdscontains the universe ID - Check
space_{spaceId}database →universescollection - Find the universe document
- Expected:
layoutproperty should be present with sections array
✅ Step 6: Verify Browser 2 Receives Update
- Wait 10-15 seconds (sync pull interval)
- Browser 2 Console should show:
[SpaceService] 🔄 Space data updated from backend, reloading universes [SpaceService] Loaded universes: 1 - Browser 2 UI should now show: The new section count matching Browser 1
✅ Step 7: Test Reverse Sync
- Make changes in Browser 2 (remove a section)
- Verify Browser 1 receives the update within 10-15 seconds
🎯 Key Learnings
✅ 1. Always Sync Full Objects
When updating a document in MongoDB via updateOne({ $set: data }), always send the FULL object with all required properties. Partial objects will overwrite/delete fields.
✅ 2. Load Before Update Pattern
// ✅ CORRECT Pattern for Updates:
const existing = await storage.get(key);
const updated = { ...existing, newField: newValue };
await syncEngine.write(key, updated, 'entity');
// ❌ WRONG Pattern:
await syncEngine.write(key, { id, newField: newValue }, 'entity');
✅ 3. Offline-First + Full Sync Strategy
- Local storage: Can save partial data (layout only) for fast read/write
- MongoDB sync: MUST send full objects to maintain data integrity
- Solution: Separate storage keys for granular data + full object sync

🔮 Future Enhancements
Optimistic UI Updates (Phase 2)
- Show layout changes in other browsers BEFORE MongoDB confirms
- Use WebSockets/Server-Sent Events for real-time sync (< 1s instead of 10s)
Conflict Resolution (Phase 3)
- Handle simultaneous edits from multiple users
- Last-write-wins vs. operational transforms
- Show "User X is editing" indicators
Delta Sync (Phase 4)
- Send only changed sections instead of full layout
- Reduce bandwidth and improve performance for large universes
