AI Integration Performance Optimizations
Issue Identified
The logs showed multiple redundant AI Factory initializations during app startup, particularly in the UX-test app with the AI Tester component.
Root Causes
- Multiple Service Initializations - AI Factory was being initialized 4-5 times
- Redundant API Key Saving - Same API keys were being saved to storage repeatedly
- Connection Test Re-initialization - Entire factory was being re-initialized for each connection test
Optimizations Applied
1. Singleton Pattern for AI Factory Service
File: libs/gograb-ai/src/lib/services/ai-factory.service.ts
Changes:
- Added
isInitializedflag to prevent multiple initializations - Modified
initialize()method to check existing state - Added key comparison to skip redundant updates
- Optimized
initializeWithRealKeys()to run only once
Implementation:
@Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' })
export class AIFactoryService {
private isInitialized = false;
private currentKeys: Record<string, string> = {};
async initialize(): Promise<void> {
if (this.isInitialized) {
console.log('🔄 AI Factory already initialized, skipping duplicate initialization');
return;
}
console.log('🔑 Initializing AI Factory with REAL API keys');
// ... initialization logic
this.isInitialized = true;
}
async initializeWithRealKeys(): Promise<void> {
const newKeys = await this.loadApiKeys();
// Compare keys to avoid redundant updates
const keysChanged = this.haveKeysChanged(newKeys);
if (!keysChanged && this.isInitialized) {
console.log('🔄 API keys unchanged, skipping re-initialization');
return;
}
this.currentKeys = newKeys;
await this.initialize();
}
private haveKeysChanged(newKeys: Record<string, string>): boolean {
return JSON.stringify(newKeys) !== JSON.stringify(this.currentKeys);
}
}
Benefits:
- Prevents multiple AI Factory initializations
- Reduces console log noise
- Improves startup performance
2. Smart API Key Management
File: libs/gograb-ai/src/lib/services/ai-config.service.ts
Changes:
- Added key comparison in
setApiKey()method - Optimized
initializeApiKeys()to only save when changes occur - Added change detection for storage operations
Implementation:
@Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' })
export class AIConfigService {
private currentKeys: Record<string, string> = {};
async setApiKey(provider: AIProvider, key: string): Promise<void> {
const currentKey = this.currentKeys[provider];
if (currentKey === key) {
console.log(`🔄 API key for ${provider} unchanged, skipping update`);
return;
}
console.log(`🔑 API key for ${provider} updated and saved`);
this.currentKeys[provider] = key;
await this.saveApiKey(provider, key);
}
async initializeApiKeys(): Promise<void> {
const loadedKeys = await this.loadAllApiKeys();
const hasChanges = this.haveKeysChanged(loadedKeys);
if (!hasChanges) {
console.log('🔄 No API key changes detected, skipping storage save');
return;
}
console.log('📝 API key changes detected, updating storage');
this.currentKeys = loadedKeys;
await this.saveAllApiKeys(loadedKeys);
}
private haveKeysChanged(newKeys: Record<string, string>): boolean {
return JSON.stringify(newKeys) !== JSON.stringify(this.currentKeys);
}
}
Benefits:
- Prevents redundant localStorage writes
- Reduces unnecessary configuration updates
- Cleaner console output
Performance Impact
Before Optimization:
🔑 Initializing AI Factory with REAL API keys (repeated 4-5 times)
API key for openai updated and saved (repeated multiple times)
API key for anthropic updated and saved (repeated multiple times)
After Optimization:
🔑 Initializing AI Factory with REAL API keys (once)
🔄 AI Factory already initialized, skipping duplicate initialization
🔄 API key for openai unchanged, skipping update
🔄 No API key changes detected, skipping storage save
Additional Performance Optimizations
3. Connection Pooling
HTTP Client Optimization:
@Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' })
export class OptimizedHttpService {
private httpClient: HttpClient;
private connectionPool: Map<string, Observable<any>> = new Map();
constructor(private http: HttpClient) {
this.httpClient = http;
}
makeRequest(url: string, options: any): Observable<any> {
const cacheKey = this.generateCacheKey(url, options);
if (this.connectionPool.has(cacheKey)) {
return this.connectionPool.get(cacheKey)!;
}
const request = this.httpClient.post(url, options.body, options).pipe(
tap(() => this.connectionPool.delete(cacheKey)),
share()
);
this.connectionPool.set(cacheKey, request);
return request;
}
private generateCacheKey(url: string, options: any): string {
return `${url}-${JSON.stringify(options.body)}`;
}
}
4. Response Caching
Smart Response Caching:
@Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' })
export class ResponseCacheService {
private cache = new Map<string, { data: any; timestamp: number }>();
private readonly CACHE_DURATION = 5 * 60 * 1000; // 5 minutes
getCachedResponse(key: string): any | null {
const cached = this.cache.get(key);
if (!cached) return null;
if (Date.now() - cached.timestamp > this.CACHE_DURATION) {
this.cache.delete(key);
return null;
}
return cached.data;
}
setCachedResponse(key: string, data: any): void {
this.cache.set(key, {
data,
timestamp: Date.now()
});
}
generateCacheKey(prompt: string, model: string, temperature: number): string {
return `${model}-${temperature}-${prompt.slice(0, 50)}`;
}
}
5. Lazy Loading
Lazy Service Loading:
@Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' })
export class LazyAIService {
private openaiService: OpenAIService | null = null;
private anthropicService: AnthropicService | null = null;
async getOpenAIService(): Promise<OpenAIService> {
if (!this.openaiService) {
const { OpenAIService } = await import('@gograb-ai');
this.openaiService = new OpenAIService();
}
return this.openaiService;
}
async getAnthropicService(): Promise<AnthropicService> {
if (!this.anthropicService) {
const { AnthropicService } = await import('@gograb-ai');
this.anthropicService = new AnthropicService();
}
return this.anthropicService;
}
}
6. Request Debouncing
Smart Request Debouncing:
@Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' })
export class DebouncedAIService {
private debounceMap = new Map<string, Subject<any>>();
makeDebouncedRequest(
key: string,
request: () => Observable<any>,
debounceMs: number = 300
): Observable<any> {
if (!this.debounceMap.has(key)) {
this.debounceMap.set(key, new Subject());
}
const subject = this.debounceMap.get(key)!;
return subject.asObservable().pipe(
debounceTime(debounceMs),
distinctUntilChanged(),
switchMap(() => request()),
share()
);
}
}
Implementation Guidelines
1. Service Initialization
// In your app component
@Component({
// ...
})
export class AppComponent implements OnInit {
constructor(private aiFactory: AIFactoryService) {}
async ngOnInit() {
// Initialize only once at app startup
await this.aiFactory.initializeWithRealKeys();
}
}
2. Component-Level Optimization
@Component({
// ...
})
export class AIComponent implements OnInit, OnDestroy {
private subscription = new Subscription();
private requestCache = new Map<string, any>();
constructor(
private aiService: OpenAIService,
private cacheService: ResponseCacheService
) {}
async makeAIRequest(prompt: string) {
const cacheKey = this.cacheService.generateCacheKey(prompt, 'gpt-4o', 0.7);
// Check cache first
const cached = this.cacheService.getCachedResponse(cacheKey);
if (cached) {
return cached;
}
// Make request
const response = await this.aiService.sendMessage({
model: 'gpt-4o',
messages: [{ role: 'user', content: prompt }]
});
// Cache response
this.cacheService.setCachedResponse(cacheKey, response);
return response;
}
ngOnDestroy() {
this.subscription.unsubscribe();
}
}
Performance Monitoring
1. Performance Metrics
@Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' })
export class PerformanceMonitorService {
private metrics: { [key: string]: number[] } = {};
startTimer(operation: string): () => void {
const start = performance.now();
return () => {
const duration = performance.now() - start;
this.recordMetric(operation, duration);
};
}
recordMetric(operation: string, value: number): void {
if (!this.metrics[operation]) {
this.metrics[operation] = [];
}
this.metrics[operation].push(value);
// Keep only last 100 measurements
if (this.metrics[operation].length > 100) {
this.metrics[operation].shift();
}
}
getAverageTime(operation: string): number {
const times = this.metrics[operation];
if (!times || times.length === 0) return 0;
return times.reduce((sum, time) => sum + time, 0) / times.length;
}
}
2. Usage Example
async makeOptimizedRequest(prompt: string) {
const stopTimer = this.performanceMonitor.startTimer('ai-request');
try {
const response = await this.aiService.sendMessage({
model: 'gpt-4o',
messages: [{ role: 'user', content: prompt }]
});
stopTimer();
return response;
} catch (error) {
stopTimer();
throw error;
}
}
