Offline-First Architecture
Complete guide to the offline-first storage and sync architecture
ποΈ Offline-First Architecture
Complete architectural guide to the groundbreaking offline-first storage system
π― Core Philosophy
IndexedDB is ALWAYS the source of truth for READ operations
MongoDB is the sync destination for PERSISTENCE
Performance is TOP priority - local-first = light speed β‘

π Data Flow
Read Operation Flow
1. Application calls: syncEngine.read('space_user-123')
β
2. Read from IndexedDB (5-10ms) β‘ INSTANT
β
3. Return data to application immediately
β
4. Check if data is stale (background, non-blocking)
β
5. If stale: Queue background refresh from MongoDB
β
6. Background refresh updates IndexedDB for next read
Write Operation Flow
1. Application calls: syncEngine.write('space_user-123', data, 'space')
β
2. Write to IndexedDB (5-10ms) β‘ INSTANT
β
3. Return success to application immediately
β
4. If sync enabled: Add to sync queue (persisted)
β
5. Background sync picks up queue every 5 seconds
β
6. Push to MongoDB API
β
7. Remove from queue on success (or retry on failure)
Delete Operation Flow
1. Application calls: syncEngine.delete('universe_123', 'universe')
β
2. Delete from IndexedDB immediately β‘ INSTANT
β
3. Return success to application
β
4. If sync enabled: Queue delete operation
β
5. Background sync processes delete to MongoDB
ποΈ Environment Modes
Mode 1: Mock (Offline Development)
useMockApi: true
Configuration:
- Sync: DISABLED
- Backend: NONE
- Storage: IndexedDB only
- Speed: β‘ Instant (5-10ms)
Use Cases:
- Offline development
- No backend setup needed
- Testing frontend features
- Guest user development
Mode 2: Real (Production/Testing)
useMockApi: false
backendApiUrl: BACKEND_URLS.railway
Configuration:
- Sync: ENABLED
- Backend: MongoDB Atlas
- Storage: IndexedDB + Sync
- Speed: β‘ Instant (5-10ms) + background sync
Use Cases:
- Production deployment
- Multi-device sync
- Team collaboration
- Backend authentication
Mode 3: Local (Development with Backend)
useMockApi: false
backendApiUrl: BACKEND_URLS.local
Configuration:
- Sync: ENABLED
- Backend: Local MongoDB
- Storage: IndexedDB + Sync
- Speed: β‘ Instant (5-10ms) + local sync
Use Cases:
- Full-stack development
- Backend debugging
- Local testing
π Mode Switching
The Old Way (BROKEN)
// β Switching modes = data loss
Mock Mode β Real Mode = ALL DATA LOST
Real Mode β Mock Mode = ALL DATA LOST
The New Way (PERFECT)
// β
Switching modes = just toggle sync flag
Mock Mode β Real Mode = Data preserved + sync starts β
Real Mode β Mock Mode = Data preserved + sync stops β
How It Works:
- All data always in IndexedDB
- Sync flag just controls background sync
- No data migration needed
- Instant mode switching
π¦ Sync Queue System
Queue Persistence
// Queue persisted using autoFlashState
private syncQueue = autoFlashState<SyncOperation[]>('sync-queue', []);
Features:
- Persists across page refreshes
- Survives crashes
- Automatic retry on failure
- Duplicate detection
Queue Processing
// Every 5 seconds (configurable)
setInterval(() => {
if (navigator.onLine && !syncInProgress) {
processQueue();
}
}, 5000);
Batch Processing:
- Process up to 10 operations at a time
- Retry failed operations (max 3 attempts)
- Remove successful operations
- Keep failed operations for next cycle
π― Integration Examples
SpaceService Integration
@Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' })
export class SpaceService {
private syncEngine = inject(SyncEngineService);
async createUniverse(data: UniverseCreate): Promise<Universe> {
const universe = { ...data, id: `universe_${Date.now()}` };
// β‘ OFFLINE-FIRST: Write local + queue for sync
await this.syncEngine.write(`universe_${universe.id}`, universe, 'universe');
// Done! Instant response β
return universe;
}
}
Custom Module Integration
export class MyModuleService {
private syncEngine = inject(SyncEngineService);
async saveModuleData(moduleId: string, data: any) {
// Use module-specific key format
const key = `module-${moduleId}:data`;
await this.syncEngine.write(key, data, 'module');
}
}
π§ Configuration Options
Full Configuration Example
await syncEngine.initialize({
enabled: true, // Enable sync
interval: 5000, // Sync every 5 seconds
batchSize: 10, // 10 operations per batch
retryAttempts: 3, // Retry 3 times on failure
retryDelay: 1000, // 1 second between retries
conflictResolution: 'local-wins' // Local changes always win
});
Dynamic Configuration
// Change sync settings at runtime
syncEngine.setSyncEnabled(true); // Enable sync
syncEngine.setSyncEnabled(false); // Disable sync
π Performance Monitoring
Real-Time Stats
const stats = syncEngine.stats();
console.log({
totalSyncs: stats.totalSyncs, // Total sync operations
successRate: stats.successfulSyncs / stats.totalSyncs,
avgDuration: stats.lastSyncDuration, // Last sync duration (ms)
failureRate: stats.failedSyncs / stats.totalSyncs
});
Queue Health
const queueSize = syncEngine.queueSize();
if (queueSize > 100) {
console.warn('Large sync queue - network issues?');
}
π Migration Guide
For Existing Users
Migration is automatic on first app load:
MigrationServicechecks migration flag- If not migrated: Runs migration logic
- Sets migration flag in localStorage
- App continues normally
Manual Migration Reset
// In browser console
const migration = inject(MigrationService);
migration.resetMigrationFlag();
// Reload page to re-run migration
