MongoDB Integration - YOUR ACTION PLAN 🎯

Date: October 15, 2025
Status: ✅ Implementation Fixed - Ready for Your Testing

🚨 THE ISSUE YOU DISCOVERED

You were absolutely right! The MongoDB integration was completely simulated - no actual data was being saved to MongoDB. It was all mock data.

What you found:

✅ WHAT I FIXED

I've completely rewritten the MongoDB integration. Here's what changed:

1. Added MongoDB Driver ✅

File: package.json

2. Fixed Configuration Bug ✅

File: environments/mongodb.config.ts

3. Implemented Real MongoDB Operations ✅

File: libs/storage-system/src/sync/adapters/mongodb-sync-adapter.ts

4. Created Setup Documentation ✅

🎯 YOUR NEXT STEPS

Step 1: Install MongoDB Driver (2 minutes)

cd /Users/fguijarro/developer/repos/editor

# Install the mongodb package
yarn install --ignore-engines

If you get the @core error:

# Workaround 1: Try npm
npm install mongodb

# Workaround 2: Clean install
rm -rf node_modules yarn.lock
yarn install --ignore-engines

Verify installation:

ls -la node_modules/mongodb
# Should show the mongodb folder

Step 2: Get MongoDB Atlas Credentials (5 minutes)

A. Create Database User

  1. Go to: https://cloud.mongodb.com/v2/688796fab8924748e5c599d2
  2. Click "Database Access" (left sidebar)
  3. Click "Add New Database User"
  4. Create user:
    • Username: Choose something (e.g., storage-app)
    • Password: Generate strong password
    • Privileges: "Read and write to any database"
  5. Click "Add User"
  6. SAVE YOUR CREDENTIALS! You'll need them next

B. Configure Network Access

  1. Click "Network Access" (left sidebar)
  2. Click "Add IP Address"
  3. For development: Click "Allow Access from Anywhere"
  4. Enter: 0.0.0.0/0
  5. Comment: "Development Access"
  6. Click "Confirm"
  7. Wait 1-2 minutes for changes to take effect

Step 3: Configure Your Credentials (3 minutes)

Option A: Create Local Environment File (Recommended)

# Copy template
cp environments/mongodb.env.template environments/mongodb.env.local

# Edit the file
nano environments/mongodb.env.local
# or
code environments/mongodb.env.local

Replace the values:

# Replace YOUR_USERNAME and YOUR_PASSWORD with your actual credentials
MONGODB_CONNECTION_STRING=mongodb+srv://YOUR_USERNAME:[email protected]/?retryWrites=true&w=majority&appName=GoGrabSpace

# Optional: Change database name if you want
MONGODB_DATABASE=storage-system

# Optional: Enable debug logging
MONGODB_DEBUG=true

Save the file!

Option B: Set System Environment Variables

macOS/Linux:

export MONGODB_CONNECTION_STRING="mongodb+srv://USERNAME:[email protected]/?retryWrites=true&w=majority&appName=GoGrabSpace"
export MONGODB_DATABASE="storage-system"

Windows PowerShell:

$env:MONGODB_CONNECTION_STRING="mongodb+srv://USERNAME:[email protected]/?retryWrites=true&w=majority&appName=GoGrabSpace"
$env:MONGODB_DATABASE="storage-system"

Step 4: Test the Connection (2 minutes)

Start Your Dev Server

yarn dev:gograb
# Should start on port 5200

Test in Browser

  1. Go to: http://localhost:5200/storage/mongodb/connection

  2. You should see:

    • Connection status indicator
    • "Test Connection" button
    • Cluster information
  3. Click "Test Connection"

  4. Expected Result:

    ✅ Connected to MongoDB Atlas!
    📊 Database: storage-system
    🔌 Status: Connected

  5. If you see errors:

    • Check console logs (F12)
    • Verify credentials in environment file
    • Make sure Network Access is configured
    • Wait if cluster is paused (3-5 minutes to resume)

Step 5: Create Real Data! (2 minutes)

Use the Offline-First Demo

  1. Go to: http://localhost:5200/storage/mongodb/offline-first

  2. Create a task:

    • Enter title: "Test MongoDB Connection"
    • Enter description: "Verify data saves to Atlas"
    • Set priority: High
    • Click "Create Task"
  3. Check the console (F12):

    🔄 Executing insert on tasks
✅ Inserted document into tasks: ObjectId('...')

  4. VERIFY IN MONGODB ATLAS:

Try More Operations

Update a task:

Delete a task:

Query data:

🎉 SUCCESS CRITERIA

You'll know everything is working when:

✅ Console Logs Show:

✅ Connected successfully to MongoDB Atlas!
📊 Database: storage-system
✅ Inserted document into tasks: ObjectId('...')
✅ Updated 1 document(s) in tasks
✅ Found 5 document(s) in tasks

✅ MongoDB Atlas Shows:

✅ Demos Work:

🚨 Troubleshooting

"Cannot find module 'mongodb'"

Solution:

yarn add mongodb --ignore-engines
# or
npm install mongodb

"Authentication failed"

Solution:

"Connection timeout"

Solution:

"Cluster is paused"

Solution:

"Data not appearing in Atlas"

Solution:
