MongoDB Authentication Fix - Offline-First Architecture ✅

Date: October 15, 2025
Issue: MongoDB backend service failing with "No authentication token found"
Status: Fixed

🔧 Problem

The MongoDBBackendService was trying to access JWT tokens directly from localStorage without integrating with the BackendAuthAdapterService, which handles automatic authentication with the backend API.

Error:

Error: No authentication token found. Please login first.

✅ Solution

Updated MongoDBBackendService to integrate with BackendAuthAdapterService for automatic authentication:

Changes Made

  1. Injected BackendAuthAdapterService

    private readonly backendAuth = inject(BackendAuthAdapterService);

  2. Added Constructor with Auto-Authentication

    constructor() {
      // Ensure backend authentication on service initialization
      this.ensureAuthenticated();
    }

  3. Created getAuthenticatedHeaders() Method

    • Returns Observable<HttpHeaders> instead of throwing errors
    • Automatically authenticates if no token exists
    • Uses switchMap pattern to chain authentication before requests
  4. Updated All HTTP Methods

    • testConnection() - Now uses authenticated headers
    • listCollections() - Now uses authenticated headers
    • queryDocuments() - Now uses authenticated headers
    • insertDocument() - Now uses authenticated headers
    • updateDocument() - Now uses authenticated headers
    • deleteDocument() - Now uses authenticated headers

🎯 Architecture: Offline-First Approach

Important: Storage System Independence

The MongoDB backend integration is completely optional and does not affect the core offline-first storage system:

Key Principles

  1. Offline-First Always

    • Storage system works perfectly without MongoDB
    • IndexedDB is the primary data store
    • No backend dependency for core functionality
  2. MongoDB is Optional

    • Only for cloud backup and sync
    • User must explicitly configure connection
    • Graceful fallback if backend unavailable
  3. Backend API is Supplementary

    • Handles MongoDB operations (browser limitation)
    • Provides secure credential management
    • Enables real-time sync (future)

🔐 Authentication Flow

1. Service Initialization

MongoDBBackendService constructor()
  ↓
ensureAuthenticated()
  ↓
BackendAuthAdapterService.getToken()
  ↓
If no token: autoAuthenticate()
  ↓
Register/Login demo user ([email protected])
  ↓
Store JWT token in localStorage

2. HTTP Request Flow

testConnection(config)
  ↓
getAuthenticatedHeaders()
  ↓
Check if token exists
  ↓
If yes: Return headers immediately
If no: autoAuthenticate() → Return headers
  ↓
switchMap to HTTP request with authenticated headers
  ↓
POST /api/storage/mongodb/test

🧪 Testing the Fix

1. Navigate to MongoDB Demo

http://localhost:5200/storage/mongodb

2. You Should See:

3. Console Output (Expected):

[MongoDB Backend Service] Auto-authenticating with backend...
🔐 Existing backend token found. Assuming authenticated.
✅ Backend authentication ready
[MongoDB Backend Service] Testing connection...
✅ MongoDB connection successful: { connected: true, ... }

└── mongodb-backend.service.ts
    ✅ Added BackendAuthAdapterService injection
    ✅ Added ensureAuthenticated() method
    ✅ Changed getHeaders() to getAuthenticatedHeaders()
    ✅ Updated all HTTP methods to use authenticated headers
    ✅ Added comprehensive documentation

🎯 Benefits

For Users

For Developers

For Architecture

🔮 Next Steps

  1. ✅ Test MongoDB connection in UI
  2. ✅ Verify auto-authentication works
  3. ✅ Confirm offline-first storage still works independently
  4. 🔄 Build collection browser UI (future)
  5. 🔄 Implement real-time sync (future)
  6. 🔄 Add conflict resolution (future)

📝 Important Notes

✅ Status: FIXED

The authentication issue is resolved. MongoDB backend integration now works seamlessly with automatic authentication while maintaining the offline-first architecture.
