MongoDB Backend API - Testing Guide ✅

Date: October 16, 2025
Status: Fully Operational
Backend: http://localhost:3000/api
Frontend: http://localhost:5200

🎯 What Was Fixed

Issue #1: Connection String Format Error

Problem:

❌ mongodb+srv://user:pass!@@cluster.mongodb.net/
                           ^^
                       Double @ symbol

Root Cause:

Solution:

✅ mongodb+srv://user:pass%21%[email protected]/
                     ^^^^^^
                URL-encoded: ! → %21, @ → %40

🔒 Security: Store your actual connection string in .env.local file (never commit to git)

Issue #2: Authentication Token Missing

Problem:

Error: No authentication token found. Please login first.

Root Cause:

Solution:

🧪 Testing the MongoDB Integration

Method 1: UI Testing (Recommended)

Step 1: Access the MongoDB Connection Demo

http://localhost:5200/storage/mongodb

Step 2: Use the Example Connection

Click the "Use This" button next to "MongoDB Atlas (GoGrabSpace)"

This will auto-fill the connection string from your .env.local file:

# Connection string format (get actual value from .env.local):
mongodb+srv://<USERNAME>:<URL_ENCODED_PASSWORD>@<CLUSTER>.mongodb.net/

Step 3: Test Connection

Click the "Test Connection" button

Expected Result:

✅ Connection Status: Connected to gograbspace
✅ Latency: ~800-900ms
✅ MongoDB Version: 8.0.15
✅ Databases: 4 databases found
   - gograb-api
   - sample_mflix
   - admin
   - local

Method 2: Backend API Testing (cURL)

Test MongoDB Connection Endpoint

# Get JWT token (use existing or register new user)
TOKEN="eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJzdWIiOiI2OGYwM2FiZjZjODRjNWIzN2ZmODAxNTUiLCJlbWFpbCI6InRlc3QtY2xpQGV4YW1wbGUuY29tIiwicm9sZXMiOlsidXNlciJdLCJpYXQiOjE3NjA1NzQxNDMsImV4cCI6MTc2MTE3ODk0M30.qsMBUzK2GzAKpEQ_Dtm1W5dtu-fiM0FJrMaBEA46Pes"

# Test MongoDB connection
curl -X POST http://localhost:3000/api/storage/mongodb/test \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
  -d '{
    "connectionString": "'$MONGODB_CONNECTION_STRING'",
    "databaseName": "gograb-api"
  }' | jq '.'

# Note: Set MONGODB_CONNECTION_STRING from your .env.local file first

Expected Response:

{
  "connected": true,
  "clusterName": "gograbspace",
  "databases": [
    "gograb-api",
    "sample_mflix",
    "admin",
    "local"
  ],
  "latency": 847,
  "version": "8.0.15"
}

Method 3: List Collections

curl -X POST http://localhost:3000/api/storage/mongodb/collections \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
  -d '{
    "connectionString": "'$MONGODB_CONNECTION_STRING'",
    "databaseName": "gograb-api"
  }' | jq '.'

# Note: Set MONGODB_CONNECTION_STRING from your .env.local file first

🔐 Authentication Flow (Auto-Handled)

What Happens Behind the Scenes

  1. User Opens MongoDB Demo

    http://localhost:5200/storage/mongodb

  2. MongoDBBackendService Initializes

    constructor() {
      this.ensureAuthenticated(); // Auto-auth on init
    }

  3. Auto-Authentication Process

    Check if JWT token exists in localStorage
    ↓
    If NO token:
      → Call BackendAuthAdapterService.autoAuthenticate()
      → Register/Login [email protected]
      → Store JWT token in localStorage
    ↓
    If YES token:
      → Use existing token

  4. User Clicks "Test Connection"

    getAuthenticatedHeaders()
    ↓
    Return Observable with JWT in Authorization header
    ↓
    POST /api/storage/mongodb/test
    ↓
    Backend validates JWT
    ↓
    Backend connects to MongoDB
    ↓
    Return connection details

📊 All Backend API Endpoints

🚀 Quick Start Testing

1. Ensure Services are Running

# Check backend
curl http://localhost:3000/api
# Expected: {"message":"BACKEND API IS RUNNING!!"}

# Check frontend
curl http://localhost:5200 | head -1
# Expected: <!doctype html>

2. Open MongoDB Demo

http://localhost:5200/storage/mongodb

3. Test Connection

  1. Click "Use This" on the MongoDB Atlas example
  2. Click "Test Connection"
  3. Verify you see: ✅ Connected to gograbspace

4. Check Console Logs

Open browser DevTools → Console:

✅ [MongoDB Backend Service] Auto-authenticating with backend...
✅ [MongoDB Backend Service] Backend authentication successful
✅ [MongoDB Backend Service] Testing connection...
✅ MongoDB connection successful: { connected: true, ... }

🔧 Troubleshooting

Problem: "No authentication token found"

Solution: The frontend auto-authenticates. Wait 2-3 seconds after page load, then try again.

Problem: "Cannot connect to backend API"

Check:

lsof -i :3000 # Backend should be running on port 3000

Fix:

cd /Users/fguijarro/developer/repos/editor
npx nx serve backend-api

Problem: "MongoDB connection failed"

Check Connection String Format:

✅ GOOD: mongodb+srv://user:pass%21%[email protected]/
❌ BAD:  mongodb+srv://user:pass!@@host.mongodb.net/

URL Encoding Reference:

Problem: "Frontend won't compile"

Check for TypeScript errors:

tail -50 /tmp/gograb-space-final.log | grep "ERROR"

Common fix:

# Restart frontend
killall -9 node
cd /Users/fguijarro/developer/repos/editor
npx nx serve gograb-space

Key Principle: The core storage system NEVER depends on MongoDB or the backend API. MongoDB is purely optional for cloud backup and sync.
