MONGODB QUICK TEST FEATURE
Ecosistema completo para organización y gestión de contenido con interfaces espaciales
MongoDB Quick Test Feature - Implementation Complete ✅
Date: October 16, 2025
Feature: One-Click MongoDB Connection Testing
Status: ✅ Fully Operational
🎯 Problem Solved
Before (❌ Error-Prone)
- Users had to manually enter connection strings
- Special characters required URL encoding (
!→%21,@→%40) - Easy to make mistakes with double
@@or missing encoding - Error: "Internal server error" due to malformed connection strings
After (✅ Simple & Reliable)
- One-click "Quick Test" button
- Uses backend's pre-configured MongoDB connection
- No manual input required
- No URL encoding confusion
- Works instantly!
🚀 New Features
1. Quick Test Button (Prominent Green Card)
- Location: Top of the page
- Action: Tests the backend's configured MongoDB connection
- No Input Required: Just click and go!
- Visual: Highlighted in green with bolt icon
2. Backend Configuration Support
- Backend now uses
MONGODB_CONNECTION_STRINGfrom.env.local - Connection string is properly configured server-side
- No need for users to handle URL encoding
- Secure - credentials never exposed to frontend
3. Custom Connection (Optional)
- Advanced users can still provide custom connection strings
- Clearly marked as "Optional" and "Advanced"
- Example connections with proper URL encoding
- Manual connection testing still available
📋 How It Works
Backend Changes
1. Storage Controller (storage.controller.ts)
@Post('mongodb/test')
async testMongoDBConnection(
@Body() connectionDto: Partial<MongoDBConnectionDto>, // Now accepts partial/empty body
@Request() req: any,
): Promise<MongoDBTestResponse> {
// If no connection string provided, use configured one from environment
const connectionString = connectionDto.connectionString || null;
const databaseName = connectionDto.databaseName || 'gograb-api';
return this.storageService.testConnection(
connectionString,
databaseName,
req.user.sub
);
}
2. Storage Service (storage.service.ts)
async testConnection(
connectionString: string | null, // Now accepts null
databaseName: string,
userId: string,
): Promise<any> {
// If no connection string provided, use the configured one from environment
const finalConnectionString = connectionString ||
this.config.get<string>('MONGODB_CONNECTION_STRING');
if (!finalConnectionString) {
throw new Error('No MongoDB connection string configured');
}
this.logger.log(`Using ${connectionString ? 'provided' : 'configured'} connection string`);
// Continue with connection test...
}
Frontend Changes
1. New Method (mongodb-connection.component.ts)
async testConfiguredConnection(): Promise<void> {
this.status.update(s => ({ ...s, testing: true, error: null }));
// Test connection using backend's configured connection
// No connection string needed!
this.mongoService.testConnection({
databaseName: this.databaseName()
}).subscribe({
next: (response) => {
// Success! Display connection info
this.status.set({
connected: true,
clusterName: response.clusterName,
databases: response.databases,
latency: response.latency,
version: response.version
});
},
error: (error) => {
// Handle error
this.status.update(s => ({
...s,
connected: false,
error: error.message
}));
}
});
}
2. Updated Interface (mongodb-backend.service.ts)
export interface MongoDBConnectionConfig {
connectionString?: string; // Now optional!
databaseName?: string; // Also optional!
}
3. New UI (mongodb-connection.component.html)
<!-- Quick Test Card (NEW) -->
<section class="card quick-test-card">
<div class="card-header">
<h2>
<i class="fas fa-bolt"></i>
Quick Test
</h2>
</div>
<div class="card-body">
<p class="quick-test-intro">
Test the backend's pre-configured MongoDB connection (no manual setup required)
</p>
<button
class="btn btn-primary btn-lg"
(click)="testConfiguredConnection()"
[disabled]="status().testing">
Quick Test Configured Connection
</button>
<p class="quick-test-note">
Uses connection from backend's .env.local
</p>
</div>
</section>
🧪 Testing the Feature
Step 1: Navigate to MongoDB Demo
http://localhost:5200/demos/storage/mongodb/connection
Step 2: Click "Quick Test Configured Connection"
- Big green button at the top
- No need to fill in any fields
- Just click and wait!
Step 3: See Results
✅ Connection Status: Connected to gograbspace
✅ Latency: ~850ms
✅ MongoDB Version: 8.0.15
✅ Databases: 4 (gograb-api, sample_mflix, admin, local)
⚙️ Backend Configuration
Required Environment Variable
# .env.local (🔒 NEVER commit this file to git!)
MONGODB_CONNECTION_STRING=mongodb+srv://<USERNAME>:<URL_ENCODED_PASSWORD>@<CLUSTER>.mongodb.net/
Note: Special characters are URL-encoded in the .env.local file:
!→%21@→%40
Verify Configuration
# Check if environment variable is set
curl -X POST http://localhost:3000/api/storage/mongodb/test \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer <TOKEN>" \
-d '{}' # Empty body - uses configured connection
🎨 UI Improvements
Quick Test Card (Green Highlighted)
- Visual Design: Green gradient background with success colors
- Prominence: Appears first, before connection status
- Clear CTA: Large button with bolt icon
- User Guidance: Explains it uses backend configuration
Configuration Card (De-emphasized)
- Label: "Custom Connection (Optional)"
- Badge: "Advanced" badge to indicate optional nature
- Placement: Below Quick Test card
- Use Case: For advanced users who want to test different connections
Connection Status Card
- Real-time Updates: Shows connection status immediately
- Detailed Info: Cluster name, version, databases, latency
- Error Handling: Clear error messages with user-friendly text
📊 Architecture Benefits

🔄 Migration from Old Approach
Old Way (Error-Prone)
// User had to manually enter (example with @ symbol in password):
mongodb+srv://user:password!@@cluster.mongodb.net/
// ❌ Double @@ - FAILS!
// Or had to remember URL encoding:
mongodb+srv://user:password%21%[email protected]/
// ✅ Correct but hard to remember URL encoding rules!
New Way (Simple)
// Just click "Quick Test" button
// Backend handles everything automatically!
testConfiguredConnection() {
// Empty request - backend uses .env.local
this.mongoService.testConnection({}).subscribe(...);
}
🎯 User Experience Flow

"connectionString": "mongodb+srv://...",
"databaseName": "my-db"
}
// New way also works
POST /api/storage/mongodb/test
{
"databaseName": "gograb-api"
}
// Uses configured connection from .env.local
// Simplest way
POST /api/storage/mongodb/test
{}
// Uses both configured connection AND default database
