Session 1.3 - Handoff & Next Steps

Complete handoff document for continuing widget-builder development

Session 1.3 - Handoff Document

🎯 Session Overview

This session focused on implementing a calculation-based responsive system for the widget-builder, supporting per-dimension units (widthUnits/heightUnits) for platform-agnostic export to Flutter/React Native.

✅ Completed Work

1. Core Type System Updates

Size Interface Enhancement (libs/libs-foundational/core-models/src/lib/types/size.types.ts)

export interface Size {
  width: number | string;
  height: number | string;

  // Legacy: Single unit for both dimensions (backward compatible)
  units?: Units;

  // ✅ NEW: Per-dimension units (preferred for platform-agnostic export)
  widthUnits?: Units;
  heightUnits?: Units;
}

Status: ✅ Complete and working

2. Responsive Widget Directive Enhancement

ResponsiveWidgetPropsDirective (libs/widgets/src/lib/directives/responsive-widget-props.directive.ts)

Key Implementation:

const widthUnit = size.widthUnits || size.units || 'px';
const heightUnit = size.heightUnits || size.units || 'px';

if (typeof size.width === 'number') {
  styles['width'] = this.formatValueWithUnit(size.width, widthUnit);
}

Status: ✅ Complete and working

3. Enhanced Widget Size Component

WidgetSizeComponent (libs/widgets/src/lib/properties-components/widget-size.component.ts)

New Features:

  1. ✅ Separate unit dropdowns for width and height
  2. ✅ "Fill Width/Height" buttons (↔/↕) - Calculate canvas width/height in pixels
  3. ✅ Percentage quick actions (100%, 75%, 50%, 25%) - Calculate pixel values from canvas width
  4. ✅ Aspect ratio lock - Maintain proportions during resize
  5. ✅ Calculated info display - Show computed pixel values for non-px units
  6. ✅ Smart calculations - Query actual .editor-canvas element via getBoundingClientRect()
  7. ✅ Local update flag (_isLocalUpdate) - Prevents ngOnChanges from resetting state during programmatic updates

Critical Fix:

Status: ✅ Complete and working (All labels translated to English)

4. Enhanced Widget Position Component

WidgetPositionComponent (libs/widgets/src/lib/properties-components/widget-position.component.ts)

New Features:

  1. ✅ "Align Left" button - Sets X position to 0px
  2. ✅ "Align Right" button - Calculates right position based on canvas width minus widget width
  3. ✅ Uses getBoundingClientRect() for accurate canvas measurements
  4. ✅ All labels translated to English

Status: ✅ Complete and working

5. Basic Widget Components

Divider Widget (libs/widgets/src/lib/components/divider-widget/)

Spacer Widget (libs/widgets/src/lib/components/spacer-widget/)

Status: ✅ Complete and working

6. Widget Factory System

BasicWidgetFactory (libs/widgets/src/lib/factories/basic-widget.factory.ts)

Status: ✅ Complete and working

7. Widget Registry & Metadata

Widget Type Enum (libs/libs-foundational/core-models/src/lib/types/widget.types.ts)

Widget Metadata Registry (libs/widgets/src/lib/registry/widget-registry-init.ts)

Status: ✅ Complete and working

📋 What Still Needs to Be Done

Phase 3: Widget Migration (PENDING)

1. Migrate Divider Widget (Priority: HIGH)

Current State: Uses legacy units property Goal: Update BasicWidgetFactory to set widthUnits and heightUnits by default

Implementation:

// In BasicWidgetFactory.getDefaultSize()
private getDefaultSize(type: WidgetType): ResponsiveValue<{ width: number | string; height: number | string; }> {
  switch (type) {
    case 'divider':
      return createBaseResponsiveValue({
        width: 100,  // Numeric value
        height: 2,   // Numeric value
        widthUnits: '%' as Units,  // ✅ NEW: Per-dimension unit
        heightUnits: 'px' as Units, // ✅ NEW: Per-dimension unit
      });
    // ... other cases
  }
}

Files to Update:

2. Migrate Spacer Widget (Priority: HIGH)

Same approach as Divider - Set heightUnits: 'px' by default

3. Migrate Container Widget (Priority: CRITICAL)

Why Critical: Container is a structural element that holds other widgets Goal: Ensure container properly uses widthUnits/heightUnits for nested widget calculations

Files to Update:

Phase 4: Remaining Basic Widgets (PENDING)

Create Dedicated Components for:

  1. Input Widget (input-widget.component.ts)

    • Properties: placeholder, value, label, type (text/password/email/etc)
    • Property groups: Input-specific settings
  2. Select Widget (select-widget.component.ts)

    • Properties: options[], label, selectedValue
    • Property groups: Dropdown settings
  3. Checkbox Widget (checkbox-widget.component.ts)

    • Properties: checked, label, disabled
    • Property groups: Checkbox settings
  4. Radio Widget (radio-widget.component.ts)

    • Properties: checked, name, label, value
    • Property groups: Radio settings
  5. Icon Widget (icon-widget.component.ts)

    • Properties: iconName, iconFamily, size, color
    • Property groups: Icon settings
  6. Link Widget (link-widget.component.ts)

    • Properties: text, href, target, rel
    • Property groups: Link settings

For Each Component:

Phase 5: Export System (PENDING - FUTURE)

1. Flutter Export (Priority: MEDIUM)

Goal: Convert widget definitions to Flutter widgets using numeric calculations

Example:

// Widget with width: 100, widthUnits: '%'
Container(
  width: MediaQuery.of(context).size.width * 1.0, // 100% = 1.0
  child: Divider(thickness: 2.0)
)

Files to Create:

2. React Native Export (Priority: MEDIUM)

Goal: Convert widget definitions to React Native components

Example:

// Widget with width: 100, widthUnits: '%'
<View style={{ width: '100%', height: 2, backgroundColor: '#333' }} />

Files to Create:

Phase 6: Enhanced Preview Panel (PENDING - FUTURE)

Multi-Breakpoint Preview

Goal: Show all device sizes simultaneously (mobile, tablet, desktop)

🚀 Starting the Next Session

Recommended Opening Context:

Hi! I'm continuing from Session 1.3. I've read the handoff document.

Priority for this session:
1. Migrate Divider widget to use widthUnits/heightUnits
2. Migrate Spacer widget
3. Test backward compatibility
4. Create Input widget component

Let's start with #1 - updating BasicWidgetFactory for the divider widget.

📖 Important Rules to Remember

DO:

✅ Use separate widthUnits and heightUnits for all new widgets ✅ Provide fallback to legacy units property for backward compatibility ✅ Create dedicated components for each basic widget ✅ Use unique property group IDs (e.g., 'divider-specific', not GROUP_ID.APPEARANCE) ✅ Query canvas dimensions using getBoundingClientRect() for accurate measurements ✅ Use _isLocalUpdate flag to prevent timing issues in property components ✅ Test drag-and-drop after every widget change ✅ Translate all labels to English (Spanish later)

DON'T:

❌ Touch canvas grid background system (it works fine) ❌ Add event listeners for canvas height changes (causes UX disruption) ❌ Remove existing features - extend them ❌ Use inline styles for static layout constraints - use CSS ❌ Fight the browser with JavaScript for layout control ❌ Modify NgOnChanges without preventing re-entry during programmatic updates

🎓 Key Patterns Established

1. Widget Component Pattern

@Component({
  selector: 'lib-[widget-type]-widget',
  standalone: true,
  imports: [ResponsiveWidgetPropsDirective],
  template: `
    <div
      class="[widget-type]-widget-container"
      libResponsiveWidgetProps
      [widget]="widget()"
      [activeBreakpoint]="activeBreakpoint()"
      (click)="onWidgetClick()"
      tabindex="0"
    >
      <!-- Widget-specific content -->
    </div>
  `,
  changeDetection: ChangeDetectionStrategy.OnPush,
})
export class [WidgetType]WidgetComponent {
  readonly widget = input.required<Widget>();
  readonly activeBreakpoint = input<BreakpointKey>('base');
  @Output() selectWidget = new EventEmitter<Widget>();

  config = computed<[WidgetType]WidgetConfig>(() => {
    const defaultConfig: [WidgetType]WidgetConfig = { /* defaults */ };
    return { ...defaultConfig, ...(this.widget()?.properties || {}) };
  });

  onWidgetClick(): void {
    if (this.isPreview() || this.widget().locked) return;
    this.selectWidget.emit(this.widget());
  }
}

2. Property Groups Pattern

export const [WIDGET_TYPE]_WIDGET_PROPERTY_GROUPS: PropertyGroup[] = [
  {
    id: '[widget-type]-specific', // ✅ UNIQUE ID
    title: '[Widget Type]',
    icon: 'icon-name',
    order: GROUP_ORDER.APPEARANCE - 1,
    expanded: true,
    properties: [
      {
        key: 'properties.[propertyName]',
        label: 'Property Label',
        type: 'string' | 'number' | 'color' | 'select',
        responsive: false,
        getValue: (widget: Widget) => { /* ... */ },
        setValue: (widget: Widget, value: any) => { /* ... */ },
      },
    ],
  },
];

3. Factory Pattern

private getDefaultSize(type: WidgetType): ResponsiveValue<{ width: number | string; height: number | string; }> {
  switch (type) {
    case 'divider':
      return createBaseResponsiveValue({
        width: 100,
        height: 2,
        widthUnits: '%' as Units,  // ✅ Per-dimension units
        heightUnits: 'px' as Units,
      });
  }
}

🎯 Final Notes

This session made significant progress on the calculation-based responsive system foundation. The per-dimension units system is fully implemented and working. The next session should focus on migrating existing widgets and creating the remaining basic widget components.

The key lesson learned: UX is king. Any change that disrupts smooth widget dragging should be immediately reverted. CSS handles static layout, JavaScript handles dynamic data.

Good luck with the next session! 🚀
