Session 1.3 - Calculation-Based Responsive System Implementation
Date: November 14, 2025
Status: ✅ Phase 1 & 2 Complete
Next: Testing & Migration
🎉 Completed Features
✅ Phase 1: Enhanced Size Interface (Backward Compatible)
File: libs/libs-foundational/core-models/src/lib/types/size.types.ts
Added per-dimension units while maintaining backward compatibility:
export interface Size {
width: number | string;
height: number | string;
// Legacy: Single unit for both (backward compatible)
units?: Units;
// New: Per-dimension units (preferred)
widthUnits?: Units;
heightUnits?: Units;
}
Benefits:
- ✅ No breaking changes - all existing code continues to work
- ✅ Gradual migration - can adopt new system widget by widget
- ✅ Platform-agnostic - separate units enable better cross-platform export
✅ Phase 2: Smart Properties Editor
File: libs/widgets/src/lib/properties-components/widget-size.component.ts
Created an enhanced, intelligent size control panel with:
1. Separate Unit Controls
┌─────────────────────────────────┐
│ Ancho │
│ [100] [px ▼] [↔] │
│ │
│ Alto │
│ [50] [% ▼] [↕] │
└─────────────────────────────────┘
Features:
- Separate unit dropdowns for width and height
- Independent control per dimension
- Support for: px, %, vw, vh, rem, em, auto
2. Smart Quick Actions
┌─────────────────────────────────┐
│ [↔ 100%] [⬅️➡️ 50%] [✨ Auto] [🔒] │
└─────────────────────────────────┘
Buttons:
- 100% - Full width instantly
- 50% - Half width for responsive layouts
- Auto - Automatic sizing
- 🔒 - Lock aspect ratio (maintains proportions)
3. Fill Width/Height Buttons
┌─────────────────────────────────┐
│ Ancho [100] [px ▼] [↔] ← Fill │
│ Alto [50] [px ▼] [↕] ← Fill │
└─────────────────────────────────┘
Smart Calculation:
- Click [↔] = Calculates container width in pixels
- Click [↕] = Calculates container height in pixels
- Automatically converts % to exact px values
4. Calculated Size Display
┌─────────────────────────────────┐
│ Tamaño calculado: 800px × 600px │
└─────────────────────────────────┘
Shows when:
- Using % units
- Using vw/vh units
- Using rem/em units
- Any non-px unit displays calculated pixel value
5. Aspect Ratio Lock
When locked (🔒 active):
- Changing width automatically adjusts height
- Changing height automatically adjusts width
- Maintains original aspect ratio
- Perfect for images, icons, and proportional elements
✅ Phase 1: Enhanced Directive
File: libs/widgets/src/lib/directives/responsive-widget-props.directive.ts
Updated getComputedStyles() to support per-dimension units:
// Now checks for per-dimension units first, then falls back to legacy
const widthUnit = size.widthUnits || size.units || 'px';
const heightUnit = size.heightUnits || size.units || 'px';
// Formats values with correct unit
styles['width'] = this.formatValueWithUnit(size.width, widthUnit);
styles['height'] = this.formatValueWithUnit(size.height, heightUnit);
Benefits:
- ✅ Backward compatible - checks widthUnits first, falls back to units
- ✅ Flexible formatting - handles all unit types (px, %, vw, vh, rem, em, fr, auto)
- ✅ Platform-agnostic - pure calculations work everywhere
🎨 User Experience Improvements
Before (Old System)
┌───────────────────────┐
│ Ancho: [100] │
│ Alto: [50] │
│ Unidades: [px ▼] │ ← Single unit for both
└───────────────────────┘
Problems:
- Can't use different units for width/height
- No quick presets
- Manual calculations required
- No visual feedback
After (New System)
┌─────────────────────────────────┐
│ Ancho [100] [px ▼] [↔] │ ← Independent units
│ Alto [50] [% ▼] [↕] │ ← + Fill buttons
│ │
│ [↔ 100%] [⬅️➡️ 50%] [✨ Auto] [🔒] │ ← Quick actions
│ │
│ Tamaño calculado: 800px × 50% │ ← Live feedback
└─────────────────────────────────┘
Benefits:
- ✅ Independent control per dimension
- ✅ One-click presets (100%, 50%, Auto)
- ✅ Fill buttons for instant container sizing
- ✅ Aspect ratio lock for proportional scaling
- ✅ Live calculated size display
- ✅ Professional, intuitive UI
🧪 Testing Checklist
✅ Completed
- Size interface updated (backward compatible)
- WidgetSizeComponent enhanced with smart controls
- ResponsiveWidgetPropsDirective supports per-dimension units
- No linter errors
⏳ Pending
- Test with divider widget (verify per-dimension units work)
- Test aspect ratio lock (ensure width/height stay proportional)
- Test quick actions (100%, 50%, Auto buttons)
- Test fill buttons (calculate container dimensions)
- Verify backward compatibility (existing widgets still work)
- Test across all 6 breakpoints (base, sm, md, lg, xl, 2xl)
- Visual regression testing (screenshots before/after)
🚀 Next Steps
Phase 3: Widget Migration
Priority Order:
- ✅ Divider Widget - Test case for new system
- ✅ Spacer Widget - Similar to divider
- 📦 Container Widget - Critical structural element
- 📦 Text Widget - Most used widget
- 📦 Button Widget - Interactive element
- 📦 All remaining widgets - Systematic migration
Migration Process per Widget:
- Update default config to use
widthUnits/heightUnits - Test responsive behavior across breakpoints
- Verify drag/resize/move operations
- Test export to JSON
- Document changes
Future Enhancements
Container Width/Height Calculation:
// TODO in fillWidth(): Get actual container from DOM
fillWidth(): void {
const containerWidth = this.getActualContainerWidth(); // Real calculation
this.updateSize('width', containerWidth);
this.updateUnits('width', 'px');
}
Real-time Calculated Display:
// TODO: Hook into ResponsiveWidgetPropsDirective
calculatedWidth = computed(() => {
const directive = this.getResponsiveDirective();
return directive.convertToPixels(this._size().width, 'width');
});
📊 Architecture Decisions
Why Per-Dimension Units?
Problem: Different layouts need different unit strategies
- Width: Often 100% (full container)
- Height: Often px (fixed size)
- Current system: Forces same unit for both ❌
Solution: Independent units per dimension
{
width: 100,
widthUnits: '%', // Full width
height: 50,
heightUnits: 'px' // Fixed height
}
Why Backward Compatible?
Problem: Changing Size interface could break 100+ widgets
Solution: Optional new properties, legacy fallback
// New code uses widthUnits
const widthUnit = size.widthUnits || size.units || 'px';
// Old code still works with units
const legacyUnit = size.units || 'px';
Why Smart Quick Actions?
Problem: Common operations require multiple steps
- Set 100% width: Change value to 100, change unit to %, click apply
- Lock aspect ratio: Calculate ratio manually, adjust each dimension
Solution: One-click operations
- 100% button: Instantly set width to 100%
- 🔒 Lock: Automatically maintain proportions
