Complete UX Journey Persistence
Every UI state persists for seamless user experience
Complete UX Journey Persistence
๐ฏ Philosophy
"Each component has to update our user-journey so that we know even that tab to keep selected."
Every piece of UI state should persist to create a truly seamless experience. Users should never have to:
- Re-select tabs
- Re-expand sections
- Re-configure views
- Re-position anything
The UI should remember EVERYTHING.
๐ What Persists Now
Complete Workspace State
interface WorkspaceState {
// Core widget data
widgetName: string;
widgetType: CoreWidgetType;
widgetDescription: string;
propertyGroups: PropertyGroup[];
variants: Array<{...}>;
// UI State
activePanel: 'design' | 'properties' | 'variants' | 'code' | 'preview'; // โ
Active tab
// UX Journey tracking
expandedPropertyGroups: string[]; // โ
Which groups are expanded
selectedVariantId: string | null; // โ
Which variant is selected
codeViewMode: 'component' | 'template' | 'styles' | 'all'; // โ
Code view preference
previewBreakpoint: 'base' | 'sm' | 'md' | 'lg' | 'xl' | '2xl'; // โ
Preview size
scrollPositions: { // โ
Scroll positions per panel
properties?: number;
variants?: number;
code?: number;
};
lastSaved: number;
}
๐จ Features Implemented
1. Active Panel/Tab Persistence โ
What Persists: The currently selected tab (Design, Properties, Variants, Code, Preview)
User Journey:
- User clicks "Properties" tab
- Adds property groups
- Switches to "Design" tab
- Closes browser
- Returns โ Still on "Design" tab! โ
Implementation:
readonly activePanel = signal<'design' | 'properties' | 'variants' | 'code' | 'preview'>('design');
// Tracked in effect
const panel = this.activePanel();
state.activePanel = panel;
// Restored on init
this.activePanel.set(saved.activePanel);
2. Expanded Property Groups โ
What Persists: Which property groups are expanded/collapsed
User Journey:
- User expands "Layout" group
- Collapses "Style" group
- Switches tabs
- Returns โ Layout still expanded, Style still collapsed! โ
Implementation:
readonly expandedPropertyGroups = signal<string[]>([]);
togglePropertyGroupExpanded(groupId: string) {
this.expandedPropertyGroups.update(expanded => {
if (expanded.includes(groupId)) {
return expanded.filter(id => id !== groupId);
} else {
return [...expanded, groupId];
}
});
}
isPropertyGroupExpanded(groupId: string): boolean {
return this.expandedPropertyGroups().includes(groupId);
}
3. Selected Variant โ
What Persists: Which variant is currently selected/being edited
User Journey:
- User creates 3 variants
- Selects "Dark Mode" variant
- Switches to Code tab
- Returns โ Dark Mode still selected! โ
Implementation:
readonly selectedVariantId = signal<string | null>(null);
selectVariant(variantId: string) {
this.selectedVariantId.set(variantId);
this.logger.debug('Variant selected', { variantId });
}
4. Code View Mode โ
What Persists: Which code view is selected (Component, Template, Styles, All)
User Journey:
- User switches to "Template" only view
- Works on template
- Switches to Preview tab
- Returns to Code โ Still showing Template view! โ
Implementation:
readonly codeViewMode = signal<'component' | 'template' | 'styles' | 'all'>('all');
setCodeViewMode(mode: 'component' | 'template' | 'styles' | 'all') {
this.codeViewMode.set(mode);
this.logger.debug('Code view mode changed', { mode });
}
5. Preview Breakpoint โ
What Persists: Which breakpoint is selected in preview (Mobile, Tablet, Desktop, etc.)
User Journey:
- User switches preview to "Mobile" (sm)
- Tests responsive design
- Switches to Properties tab
- Returns to Preview โ Still in Mobile view! โ
Implementation:
readonly previewBreakpoint = signal<'base' | 'sm' | 'md' | 'lg' | 'xl' | '2xl'>('base');
setPreviewBreakpoint(breakpoint: 'base' | 'sm' | 'md' | 'lg' | 'xl' | '2xl') {
this.previewBreakpoint.set(breakpoint);
this.logger.debug('Preview breakpoint changed', { breakpoint });
}
6. Scroll Positions โ
What Persists: Scroll position in each panel (Properties, Variants, Code)
User Journey:
- User scrolls down in Properties panel
- Switches to Variants tab
- Returns to Properties โ Scroll position restored! โ
Implementation:
readonly scrollPositions = signal<{
properties?: number;
variants?: number;
code?: number;
}>({});
updateScrollPosition(panel: 'properties' | 'variants' | 'code', position: number) {
this.scrollPositions.update(positions => ({
...positions,
[panel]: position
}));
}
๐ Auto-Save Flow
Effect Tracking
constructor() {
effect(() => {
// Track ALL signals
const name = this.widgetName();
const type = this.widgetType();
const description = this.widgetDescription();
const groups = this.propertyGroups();
const variants = this.variants();
const panel = this.activePanel(); // โ
Tab
const expandedGroups = this.expandedPropertyGroups(); // โ
Expanded groups
const selectedVariant = this.selectedVariantId(); // โ
Selected variant
const codeView = this.codeViewMode(); // โ
Code view
const previewBp = this.previewBreakpoint(); // โ
Preview breakpoint
const scrollPos = this.scrollPositions(); // โ
Scroll positions
// Build complete state
const state: WorkspaceState = { ...all values... };
// Auto-save
this.storage.put(this.WORKSPACE_STATE_KEY, state);
});
}
What Triggers Auto-Save
โ
Change widget name
โ
Change widget type
โ
Add/remove property group
โ
Expand/collapse property group
โ
Switch tabs
โ
Select variant
โ
Change code view mode
โ
Change preview breakpoint
โ
Scroll in any panel
Everything triggers auto-save!
๐งช Testing Checklist
