Layout Zones Implementation - Complete
📍 Status: Core Architecture Complete ✅
The visual layout zone system has been successfully implemented, providing structured module placement within the universe editor.
What Was Built
1. Layout Zone Models (layout-zone.models.ts)
Core Interfaces:
LayoutZone- Defines a drop area with size, allowed types, order, and constraintsLayoutConfig- Complete layout structure with zones, direction, and grid settingsLayoutTemplate- Predefined layout types
7 Predefined Templates:
- Header-Main-Footer - Classic 3-row vertical layout
- Sidebar-Main - 2-column with left sidebar
- Main-Sidebar - 2-column with right sidebar
- Two-Column - Equal split horizontal
- Three-Column - Equal split 3 columns
- Dashboard-Grid - Grid layout for widgets
- Hero-Content - Hero section + content area
- Custom - User-defined zones
Helper Functions:
getLayoutConfig()- Extract layout config from layout modulegetZoneById()- Find specific zoneisModuleAllowedInZone()- Validate module type for zonegetModulesInZone()- Filter modules by zone assignment
2. Layout Zone Renderer Component
File: libs/universe-map/src/lib/components/canvas/layout-zone-renderer/layout-zone-renderer.component.ts
Features:
- ✅ Dynamic zone rendering based on
LayoutConfig - ✅ Visual drop zones with drag-over feedback
- ✅ Type validation (only allowed modules can be dropped)
- ✅ Flexible sizing (px, %, fr, flex, auto)
- ✅ Empty state placeholders
- ✅ Zone badges (required, etc.)
- ✅ Resize handles (for resizable layouts)
- ✅ Glass morphism styling
Key Interactions:
onZoneDragOver- Show visual feedback when dragging over zoneonZoneDrop- Emit event to create module in zonegetModulesInZone- Display modules assigned to each zone
3. Universal Canvas Integration
File: libs/universe-map/src/lib/components/canvas/universal-canvas/universal-canvas.component.ts
New Computed Signals:
readonly layoutModule = computed(() => {
return this.childModules().find(m => m.type === 'layout');
});
readonly layoutConfig = computed(() => {
const layout = this.layoutModule();
return layout ? getLayoutConfig(layout) : null;
});
readonly isLayoutMode = computed(() => {
return !!this.layoutConfig();
});
Conditional Rendering:
- If
isLayoutMode()is true → RenderLayoutZoneRendererComponent - Otherwise → Render free-form
ModuleCardComponentinstances
Zone Drop Handler:
onZoneDrop(event: { zone: LayoutZone; moduleType: string; position: { x: number; y: number } }) {
// Create module with zone assignment in config
this.moduleService.install(universeId, {
name: moduleName,
type: event.moduleType,
universeId,
route: `/${moduleName.toLowerCase()}`,
config: {
layoutZone: event.zone.id // Store zone assignment
}
}, {
parentId: undefined
}).subscribe(...)
}
4. Module Filtering for Visual Editor
Visual Editor Universe Types:
const VISUAL_EDITOR_UNIVERSE_TYPES = ['layout', 'galaxy', 'world'];
Key Insight:
- At the
universelevel, only structural modules (layout,galaxy,world) are shown in the visual editor - This is for visual clarity ONLY
- Other tools (vibe-coding, API, Singularity) can still create ANY module type at any level
- At
galaxyandworldlevels, ALL module types are displayed
Logging for Transparency:
if (hasNoParent && !isVisuallyRelevant) {
console.log('👁️ Module hidden in visual editor (still exists!):', {
id: m.id,
name: m.name,
type: m.type,
note: 'Available via API/vibe-coding/Singularity'
});
}
How It Works
Workflow: Adding a Layout
- User drags "Layout" module from Module Library onto canvas
- Canvas detects
type === 'layout'and creates the module - On next render,
layoutModulecomputed signal finds it layoutConfigreads the template frommodule.config.layoutTemplateisLayoutModebecomestrue- Canvas switches from free-form cards to
LayoutZoneRendererComponent
Workflow: Dropping Module into Zone
- User drags "Galaxy" from Module Library
- Hovers over a zone in the layout
LayoutZoneRendererComponentvalidates: Is "galaxy" allowed in this zone?- Visual feedback (border glow) if allowed
- User drops module
zoneDropevent emitted toUniversalCanvasComponent- Module created with
config.layoutZone = zoneId - Module appears inside that zone
Data Storage
Layout Module Config:
{
type: 'layout',
config: {
layoutTemplate: 'header-main-footer', // or any other template
// Optional custom config:
direction: 'vertical',
gap: '1rem',
customZones: [...] // for template === 'custom'
}
}
Module in Zone:
{
type: 'galaxy',
config: {
layoutZone: 'main' // Zone ID where this module lives
}
}
Visual Design
Zone Styling:
- Glass morphism background (
rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.05)) - Dashed border (
2px dashed rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.2)) - Smooth transitions (
0.3s cubic-bezier) - Drag-over glow effect (primary color border + box-shadow)
- Empty state with icon, placeholder text, and allowed types
- Required badge for mandatory zones
Module Cards in Zones:
- Simplified card style (no absolute positioning)
- Flex layout within zone content area
- Icon + name display
- Click to edit (future enhancement)
Integration with Existing Systems
✅ Module Service (UniversalModuleService)
- Uses standard
install()method - Stores zone assignment in
config(aligns with@libs-foundational/core-models) - No special API needed
✅ Storage System
- Layout config persisted in module record
- Zone assignments persisted in module config
- Flash persistence for canvas state
✅ Module Library Browser
- Works seamlessly with drag-drop
dataTransfercontains{ type: 'module-type', moduleType: 'galaxy' }- Zones validate type before accepting drop
🔄 Editor Web Lib (Future)
- Next phase: Click module in zone → Open
editor-web-lib - Content editing will use the existing powerful editor
- Maintains reusable building blocks philosophy
What's Next
Phase 2: Module Rendering in Zones (Current Focus)
The LayoutZoneRendererComponent currently shows placeholder cards for modules. Next steps:
Render Full Module Cards:
- Use
lib-module-cardcomponent within zones - Allow selection, properties editing
- Support drag-to-reorder within a zone
- Use
Zone Reordering:
- Drag modules between zones
- Update
config.layoutZoneon drop
Content Editing Integration:
- Click module in zone → Open properties panel
- For
pagemodules → Openeditor-web-lib - Seamless editing workflow
Phase 3: Advanced Layout Features
Dynamic Zone Resizing:
- Draggable resize handles between zones
- Update zone
sizein real-time - Persist to layout module config
Custom Layout Builder:
- Visual tool to create
template: 'custom' - Add/remove zones
- Configure allowed types per zone
- Visual tool to create
Nested Layouts:
- Allow layout modules inside zones
- Recursive layout rendering
- Infinite composition possibilities
Layout Templates Library:
- Drag-and-drop layout templates
- Clone and customize existing layouts
- Share layouts across universes
Technical Details
Type Safety
All interfaces are strongly typed:
export interface LayoutZone {
id: string;
name: string;
label: string;
size: ZoneSize; // `${number}%` | `${number}px` | 'auto' | 'flex' | `${number}fr`
allowedTypes: string[];
minSize?: string;
maxSize?: string;
order: number;
required?: boolean;
placeholder?: string;
icon?: string;
cssClasses?: string[];
}
Performance Considerations
- Computed Signals: Layouts are detected reactively (no manual subscriptions)
- Conditional Rendering: Only one rendering mode at a time (layout OR free-form)
- Zone Filtering:
getModulesInZone()runs on each zone, but with efficientfilter()on already-loaded modules - No DOM Manipulation: Pure Angular template logic
Accessibility
Current State:
- Zone drag-drop uses native HTML5 API
- Keyboard support: Planned for Phase 2
- Screen reader: Zones have labels, modules will have proper ARIA attributes
Future Enhancements:
- Tab navigation between zones
- Enter/Space to drop selected module
- ARIA live regions for zone updates
Testing the Implementation
Manual Testing Steps:
Create a Universe:
Navigate to a space → Universe MapAdd Layout Module:
Drag "Layout" from Module Library → Drop on canvasVerify Layout Mode:
Canvas should now show zones instead of free-form areaDrop Module into Zone:
Drag "Galaxy" → Hover over "Main Content" zone → DropCheck Persistence:
Refresh page → Layout and modules should persistInspect Module Config:
Select module → Properties panel → Config should show layoutZone: 'main'
Console Logging:
The implementation includes extensive logging:
🌌 [universe level] Visual editor showing: 2 [layout, galaxy]
📍 Zone drop: { zone: { id: 'main', ... }, moduleType: 'galaxy', ... }
✅ Module created in zone: { id: 'mod_...', config: { layoutZone: 'main' } }
Alignment with Vision
This implementation embodies the GoGrab Space philosophy:
✅ Reusable Building Blocks: Layouts are modules, zones are configs, everything composable
✅ Visual + Programmatic: Visual editor for clarity, but no system limitations
✅ Flexible & Dynamic: 7 templates + custom, any content in any zone (based on rules)
✅ Modern UX: Glass morphism, smooth transitions, drag-drop, real-time feedback
✅ Integration-Ready: Works with existing services, storage, and future editor integration
Conclusion
The Layout Zones system is architecturally complete and ready for Phase 2 (module rendering and editing). The foundation is solid, extensible, and aligned with the vision of building the most powerful platform builder in the world.
