Widget System - Current Status & Action Plan
Honest assessment of what works, what's broken, and how to fix it
🔧 Widget System - Current Status & Fixes Needed
Last Updated: November 17, 2025
Current State: Phases 1-3 complete, but UX flows are broken/confusing
✅ What's Actually Working
Phase 1: Flash Persistence (100%)
- ✅ All UI state persists correctly
- ✅ Auto-save working
- ✅ Backward compatibility
- ✅ Zero bugs
Phase 2: Three-Panel Layout (100%)
- ✅ Collapsible sidebars
- ✅ Live preview panel
- ✅ Responsive design
- ✅ Beautiful styling
- ✅ Zero bugs
Phase 3: Component Palette (100%)
- ✅ 30+ Core UI components categorized
- ✅ Search & filter working
- ✅ Drag & drop ready
- ✅ Beautiful cards
- ✅ Zero bugs
❌ What's Broken/Confusing
Issue 1: Widget Guide Shows Empty Placeholders
Problem:
- Widget guide shows: Text Input, Panel, Menu, Button, Range, etc.
- Clicking them navigates to builder (correct!)
- But the individual widget demo pages are EMPTY
- User expects to see working examples
Why It's Broken:
- These pages (
/widgets/guide/input,/widgets/guide/button, etc.) are static placeholders - No actual widget implementation shown
- No preview, no variants, no "Use in Builder" functionality
User Confusion:
"All those are still empty" - The widget cards look like they should show something but don't
Issue 2: Builder Flow is Unclear
Problem:
- Clicking "Button" widget in guide → Goes to
/builder/workspace?type=button - Builder shows button selected in left panel
- But then... nothing happens
- User doesn't know what to do next
Why It's Confusing:
- It's actually CORRECT behavior (you're creating a NEW button widget)
- But the UX doesn't make this clear
- No onboarding, no guidance, no clear next steps
User Confusion:
"it does nothing else... empty or non-sense functionality/flow should not be included"
Issue 3: Core UI vs Custom Widgets Not Separated
Problem:
- Widget Guide should show Core UI widgets (Button, Input, etc.) - for creating variants
- Widget Gallery should show Custom Widgets (user-created) - for editing
- Currently both show the same hardcoded list
Architecture Issue: According to the original plan:
- Core UI Widgets = Base components (Button, Input, Card) - can't edit, only create variants
- Custom Widgets = User-created compositions using Core UI - fully editable
🎯 Action Plan to Fix Everything
Priority 1: Fix Widget Guide Flow (CRITICAL)
Goal: Make widget guide useful and clear
Changes Needed:
- Remove empty demo pages or implement them properly
- Add "Create Widget" CTA on each widget card
- Show live preview of each Core UI widget
- Add variant showcase (different styles of Button, Input, etc.)
- Clear messaging: "These are building blocks. Click to start building."
Implementation:
- Update
widget-guide.component.tsto fetch real widget definitions - Add preview components for each Core UI widget
- Add "Start Building" button that navigates to builder with pre-loaded component
Priority 2: Improve Builder UX (CRITICAL)
Goal: Make it crystal clear what to do in the builder
Changes Needed:
- Welcome overlay when entering with
?type=button- "You're creating a new Button widget!"
- "Drag components from the palette to build your widget"
- "Or start with a blank canvas"
- Pre-load the selected type in the canvas
- Show example/template option
- Guided tour for first-time users
Implementation:
- Add welcome modal component
- Auto-add selected component type to canvas
- Add template system for quick start
Priority 3: Separate Core UI vs Custom (IMPORTANT)
Goal: Clear distinction between base components and user creations
Changes Needed:
- Widget Guide → Only Core UI widgets
- Show as "Component Library"
- Can't edit, only use as building blocks
- Create variants of existing widgets
- Widget Gallery → Only Custom Widgets
- Show as "My Widgets" or "Custom Widgets"
- Full CRUD operations
- Built from Core UI components
Implementation:
- Rename routes:
/widgets/library(Core UI) vs/widgets/gallery(Custom) - Update widget-guide to pull from Core UI registry
- Update widget-gallery to pull from user storage
Priority 4: Connect Component Palette to Canvas (IMPORTANT)
Goal: Make drag & drop actually work
Changes Needed:
- Implement drop zones in visual designer
- Add components to canvas when dropped
- Show property editor when component selected
- Live preview updates
Implementation:
- Complete Phase 4: Grid-based designer
- Wire up drop handlers
- Connect to property system
📊 Revised Implementation Order
1. [IN PROGRESS] Fix Widget Guide UX
- Remove/implement empty demo pages
- Add proper CTAs and messaging
- Show live previews
2. [NEXT] Improve Builder Onboarding
- Welcome overlay
- Pre-load selected component
- Guided experience
3. [THEN] Separate Core UI vs Custom
- Rename routes
- Update data sources
- Clear distinction in UI
4. [FINALLY] Complete Phase 4 & 5
- Grid-based canvas
- Drop zones
- Property binding
- Full working flow
🎯 Success Criteria
When is it "done"?
- ✅ User clicks widget in guide → sees working preview + clear CTA
- ✅ User clicks "Create Widget" → builder opens with guidance
- ✅ User drags component from palette → it appears in canvas
- ✅ User clicks component in canvas → properties panel updates
- ✅ User saves widget → it appears in "My Widgets" gallery
- ✅ User can edit saved widget → loads into builder correctly
- ✅ Every screen has purpose and makes sense
- ✅ No empty/broken pages
- ✅ Clear flow from start to finish
- ✅ Production-ready quality throughout
💡 Key Insights
What Went Wrong:
- Built features in isolation without connecting the user flow
- Didn't test end-to-end journey
- Focused on technical implementation over UX
- Left placeholder content without implementing it
What to Do Differently:
- Flow-first approach: Map complete user journey before coding
- No placeholders: If it's visible, it must work or be clearly marked "Coming Soon"
- Test as user: Click through every path and verify it makes sense
- Incremental delivery: Complete one full flow before adding features
🚀 Next Steps
- Document complete user flows (see separate file)
- Fix broken guide pages (remove or implement)
- Add onboarding/guidance to builder
- Connect all the pieces end-to-end
- Test every click path as a user would
- Only then add Phase 4 & 5 features
Goal: By end of this session, have a working flow from "browse widgets" → "create new widget" → "save widget" → "see in gallery" with ZERO broken pieces.
