HANDOFF S139 — Test Results (Tests 4-8)
Date: 2026-02-24 Testing Director: Claude (Session 139) Tests Run: 8 total (modgen-427ff33d, modgen-b02f72e3, modgen-da8d2669, modgen-0b975c19, modgen-fb3db9d9, modgen-e79a9454, modgen-dc80e12d, modgen-b4b4c722) Template: Fitness Studio (5 modules) Previous Session: S138.9 (URGENT — code generation not saving)
Executive Summary
Test 8 (modgen-b4b4c722) — COMPLETED with Sonnet 4.6! All 7 phases finished in 18.5 min. Backend survived the full generation. BUT files: null persists (Bug 13). The extractCodeFiles() 3-strategy fallback is NOT extracting code files from the LLM response. Page also became unresponsive after completion (Bug 10).
What Works ✅
- Sonnet 4.6 model — Backend survived the full 18.5 min generation (unlike old Sonnet 4 which crashed in Test 7)
- Frontend
outputMode=both— Correctly passed to backend,generateCode()IS running - Bug 11 (redirect) — Page stayed on
/vibe/process/modgen-b4b4c722throughout generation - Bug 12 (MongoDB) — Checkpoint saved successfully with all 7 phases
- Bug 14 (backend crash) — Backend survived the generation (but crashed ~2 min post-completion)
What's STILL BROKEN ❌
- Bug 13 (files: null) —
EXECUTE.output.files = nulldespite 5 modules generated. TheextractCodeFiles()3-strategy fallback is NOT working. This is the #1 priority. - Bug 10 (page unresponsive) — Vibe tab completely frozen after generation completed. Cannot screenshot or extract text.
- Bug 14 (post-completion crash) — Backend crashed ~2 min after generation completed (19:57:35Z → 19:59:52Z restart). The deferred post-completion work may still be problematic.
Coding Agent's Fixes Applied
- Frontend
outputMode=both— verified ✅ - Model: now Sonnet 4.6 (
claude-sonnet-4-6) — verified inai-models.config.ts✅ extractCodeFiles()with 3-strategy fallback — code exists but NOT WORKING at runtime ❌deferPostCompletionWork()+stripHeavyPayloads()— code exists but page STILL freezes ❌
Test 8 Details (modgen-b4b4c722) — SONNET 4.6 ⭐ LATEST TEST
Context: Model updated to Sonnet 4.6 (claude-sonnet-4-6). All previous fixes still applied (outputMode=both, extractCodeFiles, Bug 10/11 frontend fixes).

Key Findings
1. Generation COMPLETED — All 7 Phases ✅
- Total duration: 1,108,837ms (~18.5 min)
- EXECUTE phase: ~8 min (19:49:00 → 19:57:09) for 5 modules
- Backend survived the full generation — Bug 14 mostly fixed
- Sonnet 4.6 is stable for code generation (unlike old Sonnet 4 which crashed)
2. Bug 13 — files: null PERSISTS ❌ (CRITICAL)
EXECUTE: Object
phase: "EXECUTE"
status: "completed"
startedAt: 2026-02-24T19:49:00.337+00:00
completedAt: 2026-02-24T19:57:09.223+00:00
output: Object
modules: Array (5) ← 5 visual modules generated ✅
files: null ← ZERO code files ❌ (STILL NULL)
tokens: Object
error: null ← no error reported
Individual module contents (module 0 example):
moduleId: "trainer-management"
moduleName: "Trainer Management"
description: "Comprehensive trainer management system for fitness centers, handling ..."
entities: Array(2)
actions: Array(13)
spec: Object
confidence: 0.95
The modules contain visual decomposition data (entities, actions, spec) but NO code files. The extractCodeFiles() method is failing silently — none of the 3 strategies are extracting files from the LLM response.
3. Bug 10 — Page Unresponsive PERSISTS ❌
- After generation completed, the vibe tab became completely frozen
- Both screenshot and text extraction time out (30s+)
- Navigation refresh also fails to respond
- The
deferPostCompletionWork()andstripHeavyPayloads()fixes are NOT sufficient
4. Bug 14 — Post-Completion Crash ⚠️
- Backend survived the full 18.5 min generation ✅
- But crashed ~2 min after completion (started: 19:59:52Z, generation completed: 19:57:35Z)
- This suggests the post-completion processing (deferPostCompletionWork) or something triggered after DEPLOY still causes issues
- Memory at restart: 135 MB heap — not obviously under pressure
5. Bug 11 — Redirect FIXED ✅
- Page stayed on
/vibe/process/modgen-b4b4c722throughout the entire 18.5 min generation - SSE reconnection observed mid-generation but page remained stable
- No redirect to /landing at any point
Module Timing (EXECUTE phase, Sonnet 4.6)
| Module | Approx Duration |
|---|---|
| trainer-management (1/5) | ~90s |
| class-management (2/5) | ~90s |
| booking-system (3/5) | ~90s |
| workout-tracking (4/5) | ~90s |
| module 5/5 | ~90s |
| TOTAL EXECUTE | ~8 min |
Sonnet 4.6 EXECUTE phase: ~8 min (vs 10 min with Haiku 4.5 in Test 6). Sonnet 4.6 is actually FASTER and more capable.
Test 7 Details (modgen-dc80e12d) — POST 3-Layer Fix (Sonnet 4 OLD — CRASHED)
Context: Coding agent applied 3-layer fix: model switch to Sonnet 4, new extractCodeFiles() with 3-strategy parsing, plus Bug 10/11 frontend fixes.

| +17 min | MongoDB check: still 20 docs — no modgen-dc80e12d checkpoint saved |
Key Findings
1. Backend Crashed (Bug 14 Regression)
- Health endpoint at 18:25Z showed:
STATUS: ok, UPTIME: 19m 52s, STARTED: 2026-02-24T18:05:43.415Z - Memory at restart: 133 MB heap (not under pressure)
- The crash occurred ~5-8 min into generation, likely during PLAN or early EXECUTE phase
- Probable cause: Sonnet 4 generates much larger responses than Haiku 4.5, and the backend may OOM or timeout during code generation
2. Page Redirected to /landing (Bug 11 Regression)
- The page initially navigated correctly to
/vibe/process/modgen-dc80e12d - It stayed there during early phases (50% → 67%)
- But redirected to
/landingduring Module Decomposition - Manual navigation back to the vibe URL also redirected to /landing immediately
- Root cause hypothesis: The backend crash severs the SSE connection. The frontend's error handling may trigger a route change, or the
spaceGuardre-evaluates and redirects because the generation session is lost.
3. No MongoDB Checkpoint
- 20 documents (same as before Test 7) — the generation was never saved
- Backend crashed before it could persist the checkpoint
4. Cannot Test Bug 13 Fix (extractCodeFiles)
- The 3-strategy parsing code IS in the source ✅
- But the backend crashes before EXECUTE completes, so we can't verify it works at runtime

Bug Status Report
Bug 13 — Code Files Not Written ❌ PARTIALLY FIXED (outputMode works, but generateCode fails internally)
PROGRESS: The outputMode: 'both' fix WORKS. The parameter now reaches the backend. generateCode() IS being called (proven by 10-min EXECUTE duration in Test 6 vs 90s in Tests 4-5).
REMAINING: generateCode() runs for ~2 min per module (LLM is called), but returns no files. The issue is NOW inside generateCode():
The diagnostic logging the coding agent added should be producing output. CHECK THE BACKEND LOGS for these messages:
generateCode() CALLED for module: trainer-management
generateCode() LLM response for trainer-management: type=string, length=XXXXX
generateCode() parsed files for trainer-management: N
generateCode() RETURNING for trainer-management: N files
If these logs appear: The LLM is responding but parsing/validation is stripping files. Look at what happens between the raw LLM response and the final return value.
If these logs do NOT appear: The diagnostic logging wasn't added correctly, or generateCode() is erroring before reaching the log statements. Check for try/catch blocks that swallow errors.
Most likely root cause now (ranked):
- LLM response format mismatch —
generateCode()asks the LLM for code, gets a response, but the parsing logic expects a different JSON structure than what the LLM returns. Atry/catcharoundJSON.parsesilently discards the response. - File validation strips all files —
validatedFileslogic (line ~160-174) removes all files because they don't match the expected schema (missingpath,content, ormoduleNamefields). codeResulthas files under a different key — e.g.,codeResult.generatedFilesinstead ofcodeResult.files, socodeResult?.filesis undefined even though code was generated.
Bug 14 — Backend Crashes ⚠️ MOSTLY FIXED (post-completion crash remains)
| Test | Backend Survived? | Duration | Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Test 1 (modgen-427ff33d) | ❌ | 129s | Haiku 4.5 |
| Test 2 (modgen-b02f72e3) | ❌ | 212s | Haiku 4.5 |
| Test 3 (modgen-da8d2669) | ❌ | — | Haiku 4.5 |
| Test 4 (modgen-0b975c19) | ✅ | 211s | Haiku 4.5 |
| Test 5 (modgen-fb3db9d9) | ✅ | 264s | Haiku 4.5 |
| Test 6 (modgen-e79a9454) | ✅ | 724s (12 min) | Haiku 4.5 |
| Test 7 (modgen-dc80e12d) | ❌ CRASHED | ~5 min | Sonnet 4 (old) |
| Test 8 (modgen-b4b4c722) | ✅ SURVIVED (crashed 2m post-completion) | 1109s (18.5 min) | Sonnet 4.6 |
Sonnet 4.6 fixed the mid-generation crash. Backend survived the full 18.5 min generation. However, it crashed ~2 min after completion — likely during post-completion processing.
Bug 11 — Page Redirects to /landing ✅ FIXED
| Test | Redirect? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tests 1-4 | Various | crash/freeze before redirect could be observed |
| Test 5 (modgen-fb3db9d9) | ❌ Redirected | at ~3:00 |
| Test 6 (modgen-e79a9454) | ✅ Stable | stayed on vibe URL for full 12 minutes |
| Test 7 (modgen-dc80e12d) | ❌ Redirected | at ~90s (secondary effect of backend crash) |
| Test 8 (modgen-b4b4c722) | ✅ Stable | stayed on vibe URL for full 18.5 min |
FIXED. Route and guard fixes work. Test 7's redirect was caused by the backend crash, not a routing issue.
Bug 10 — Page Unresponsive ❌ STILL PRESENT
| Test | Unresponsive? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Test 6 (modgen-e79a9454) | ❌ Frozen | "Page Unresponsive" dialog after completion |
| Test 7 (modgen-dc80e12d) | — | Backend crashed, untestable |
| Test 8 (modgen-b4b4c722) | ❌ Frozen | Tab completely dead after completion |
The deferPostCompletionWork() and stripHeavyPayloads() fixes are NOT sufficient. The vibe tab becomes completely unresponsive after generation — even DevTools commands time out.
Bug 12 — MongoDB Persistence ✅ FIXED
- generation_checkpoints: 22 total docs (2 new since Test 7)
- modgen-b4b4c722: status "completed", all 7 phases, 1,108,837ms
CRITICAL: What the Coding Agent Must Do Next
The outputMode fix is correct. DO NOT REVERT IT.
The problem is now INSIDE generateCode(). Here's the investigation path:
Step 1: CHECK BACKEND LOGS from Test 6
The coding agent added diagnostic logging. Run the generation or check the logs from modgen-e79a9454. Look for:
Generating module: trainer-management (outputMode=both, willRunCodeGen=true) [1/5]
generateCode() CALLED for module: trainer-management
generateCode() LLM response for trainer-management: type=string, length=XXXXX
generateCode() parsed files for trainer-management: N
generateCode() RETURNING for trainer-management: N files
Step 2: Trace the data flow INSIDE generateCode()
Read the actual generateCode() method. There are likely 3 stages:
- LLM call — sends a prompt, gets a response (this IS happening — takes ~2 min per module)
- Response parsing — extracts files from the LLM response (THIS is likely where files are lost)
- Return — returns
{ files: [...] }or{ files: undefined }
The coding agent needs to add logging BETWEEN stages 2 and 3 to see:
- What does the raw LLM response look like? (Is it valid JSON? Is it a code block? Is it plain text?)
- How is the response parsed? (
JSON.parse? regex? structured output?) - What does the parsed result look like BEFORE it's returned?
Step 3: Check if there's a try/catch swallowing errors
Common pattern that causes silent failures:
async generateCode(...) {
try {
const response = await this.llm.generate(prompt);
const parsed = JSON.parse(response); // ← throws if response isn't JSON
return { files: parsed.files };
} catch (e) {
this.logger.warn(`Code gen failed: ${e.message}`); // ← logged but easy to miss
return {}; // ← returns empty object, files is undefined
}
}
If this pattern exists, the fix is to:
- Log the FULL error including the raw response that caused parsing to fail
- Handle non-JSON LLM responses (the LLM might return code in markdown format, not JSON)
Step 4: Check the allFiles → validatedFiles pipeline
After generateCode() returns, there's a validation step:
// Line ~160-174
files: validatedFiles.length > 0 ? validatedFiles : undefined
Even if generateCode() returns files, they could all be stripped by validation. Add:
this.logger.log(`allFiles before validation: ${allFiles.length}`);
this.logger.log(`validatedFiles after validation: ${validatedFiles.length}`);
if (allFiles.length > 0 && validatedFiles.length === 0) {
this.logger.error(`ALL FILES STRIPPED BY VALIDATION! Sample file: ${JSON.stringify(allFiles[0])}`);
}

| modgen-b4b4c722 | completed | 1109s | ✅ (post-crash) | null | Sonnet 4.6 | Test 8 — generation OK, files still null |
Pattern: Model Comparison
- Haiku 4.5: Backend stable, ~2 min/module EXECUTE, but
generateCode()returns null files - Sonnet 4 (old): Backend CRASHES during EXECUTE (OOM/timeout)
- Sonnet 4.6: Backend survives ✅, ~90s/module EXECUTE (faster!), but
generateCode()STILL returns null files. The bug is NOT model-dependent — it's a code/parsing issue.
Priority Fix Order (Updated After Test 8)
Priority 1: FIX extractCodeFiles() — Bug 13 (CRITICAL)
The model is correct (Sonnet 4.6 works great). The problem is 100% in the code parsing logic.
Test 8 proved: Sonnet 4.6 generates code for all 5 modules (~90s each), the backend survives, the generation completes — but files: null. The extractCodeFiles() method with its 3-strategy fallback is failing silently on EVERY module.
Investigation steps:
CHECK BACKEND LOGS from Test 8 (modgen-b4b4c722). The coding agent added logging:
extractCodeFiles(trainer-management): Strategy 1 (parseLlmJson) ... extractCodeFiles(trainer-management): Strategy 2 (JSON substring) ... extractCodeFiles(trainer-management): Strategy 3 (regex) ...If ALL 3 strategies fail, the raw LLM response format doesn't match what any strategy expects.
LOG THE RAW LLM RESPONSE — Add
this.logger.log('RAW CODE RESPONSE:', response.content.substring(0, 500))beforeextractCodeFiles()is called. This will show what Sonnet 4.6 actually returns.Common failure modes:
- LLM returns code in markdown fences (
```typescript ... ```) but parser expects JSON - LLM returns a single large code block but parser expects an array of file objects
- LLM wraps files in a different JSON structure than expected (e.g.,
{ generatedFiles: [...] }vs{ files: [...] }) - The
response.contentis actually an object, not a string, and.substringfails silently
- LLM returns code in markdown fences (
The fix is likely simple — once you see what the LLM actually returns, adjust the parsing to match. Sonnet 4.6 is a capable model; it IS generating code. The parsing just doesn't match the output format.
Priority 2: FIX Page Unresponsive — Bug 10
The page freezes AFTER generation completes, even with the deferred timer and blob stripping fixes. Two possibilities:
- The completion state object is still too large —
stripHeavyPayloads()may not be stripping enough, or there's another large object being serialized - A synchronous loop — something in the completion handler iterates over all modules/phases synchronously, blocking the main thread
- The SSE reconnection handling — the SSE reconnect observed mid-generation might leave zombie event listeners that accumulate
Check: Is there a JSON.stringify() or sessionStorage.setItem() call on the full generation result (before stripping)? That would freeze the main thread with a 1MB+ payload.
Priority 3: FIX Post-Completion Backend Crash — Bug 14 (partial)
Backend crashed ~2 min after generation completed. The generation itself survived (checkpoint saved). Possible causes:
- Post-completion webhook/notification that triggers a heavy operation
- Memory leak during the 18.5 min generation that finally hits a threshold
- The DEPLOY phase's output processing
Priority 4: Bug 11 (redirect) — ✅ FIXED, No Action Needed
Quick Verification After Bug 13 Fix
# 1. Run a generation with Fitness Studio template
# 2. Check backend logs for:
# "extractCodeFiles(trainer-management): parseLlmJson succeeded, N files" (N > 0)
# OR: "RAW CODE RESPONSE: ..." to see what format the LLM returns
# 3. Check MongoDB: EXECUTE.output.files = Array(N) where N > 0
# 4. Check UI: "Generated Modules: 5" (not 0)
# 5. Check page stability: no freeze after completion
