Universe Persistence Bug - Complete Solution

📌 NOTE: This document has been SUPERSEDED by PERSISTENCE_BUG_FINAL_SOLUTION.md
The true root cause was guest users being blocked from using the backend API.
This document remains for historical reference on the diagnostic work.

🎯 Status: ✅ FULLY FIXED (Updated - See Final Solution)

Date: November 3, 2025
Issue: Newly created universes disappear after page refresh
Severity: CRITICAL
Resolution: Multi-layered fix applied (frontend + backend)

📋 Root Causes Identified

1. Incorrect Local Backend URL ❌

File: apps/gograb-space/src/environments/environment.shared.ts

Problem:

// ❌ WRONG - Missing /api suffix
local: 'http://localhost:3000',

// ✅ CORRECT - Railway URL has /api
railway: 'https://backend-api-production-97c0.up.railway.app/api',

Impact: Frontend requests to local backend were hitting wrong endpoints (404 errors)

Fix Applied:

export const BACKEND_URLS = {
  railway: 'https://backend-api-production-97c0.up.railway.app/api',
  local: 'http://localhost:3000/api',  // ✅ FIXED - Added /api suffix
  mock: '',
} as const;

2. Guest Space ID Format Incompatibility ❌

File: apis/backend-api/src/app/spaces/spaces.service.ts

Problem:

Backend Error:

CastError: Cast to ObjectId failed for value "space_temp-9e793dc8-a24d-4343-aeea-6066f7969cd3"
kind: 'ObjectId'
path: '_id'

Fix Applied:

// ✅ FIX: Handle both MongoDB ObjectIds and guest space IDs
async updateSpace(spaceId: string, userId: string, updateDto: UpdateSpaceDto) {
  this.logger.log(`Updating space: ${spaceId}`);

  // Handle both formats
  let space;

  if (spaceId.match(/^[0-9a-fA-F]{24}$/)) {
    // Valid MongoDB ObjectId format (24 hex characters)
    space = await this.spaceModel.findById(spaceId).exec();
  } else {
    // Guest space ID or custom format - query by _id as string
    space = await this.spaceModel.findOne({ _id: spaceId as any }).exec();
  }

  if (!space) {
    throw new NotFoundException(`Space not found: ${spaceId}`);
  }

  // ... rest of the method
}

Methods Fixed:

  1. updateSpace() - Lines 157-235
  2. deleteSpace() - Lines 240-267

3. Frontend Workaround (Temporary) ⚠️

File: libs/core-angular/src/lib/services/space.service.ts

Workaround Applied: Frontend compensates for backend returning empty universeIds by keeping local copy when backend fails.

Status: Can be removed after confirming backend fix works end-to-end

🔧 Files Modified

1. Frontend Environment Configuration

2. Backend Space Service

📊 Diagnostic Logging Added

Frontend

File: libs/core-angular/src/lib/services/space-api.service.ts

[SpaceApiService] 📤 Request body: {...}
[SpaceApiService] 🌌 Sending universeIds: [...] (X items)
[SpaceApiService] 📥 Response universeIds: [...] (Y items)

Backend

File: apis/backend-api/src/app/spaces/spaces.service.ts

[SpacesService] 📥 Received universeIds to update: [...]
[SpacesService] ✅ Updated space.universeIds to: [...]
[SpacesService] 🔍 Saved universeIds: [...]

🚀 Deployment Notes

Development

# Terminal 1: Backend
npx nx serve backend-api

# Terminal 2: Frontend (after backend is ready)
npx nx serve gograb-space

Production

# Deploy backend first (auto-deployed via Railway)
git push origin main

# Then deploy frontend
# (frontend config already points to Railway for production)

🔍 How to Verify Fix

1. Check Backend URL

# Should return health status
curl http://localhost:3000/api/health

# Expected output:
# {"status":"ok","service":"backend-api","version":"1.0.0"}

2. Create Universe (Authenticated User)

  1. Navigate to dashboard
  2. Click "Create Universe"
  3. Fill in details, submit
  4. Watch backend terminal for logs:
    [SpacesController] 📥 Update request received
    [SpacesService] 📥 Received universeIds to update: [...]
    [SpacesService] ✅ Updated space.universeIds to: [...]

  5. Refresh page
  6. Universe should still be there ✅

3. Create Universe (Guest User)

  1. Open incognito window → landing page
  2. Click "Try as Guest"
  3. Create universe
  4. Check backend terminal: Should NOT show 403 error
  5. Refresh page
  6. Universe should still be there ✅
