PERSISTENCE BUG FIXED
Documentation for Plans
✅ Universe Persistence Bug - FIXED
Date: November 3, 2025
Status: ✅ ROOT CAUSE IDENTIFIED & FIXED
Priority: P0 - RESOLVED
🎯 Root Cause (Confirmed via Diagnostic Logs)
The Backend API is not returning universeIds in the update response!
The Bug Chain
- Universe Created: Successfully saved to storage ✅
- Space Updated: Backend updated with new universeId ✅
- Page Refresh: SpaceService merges local + backend universeIds ✅
- Sync to Backend: Sends merged
universeIds: [universe_xxx]✅ - Backend Response: Returns
universeIds: []❌ BUG HERE! - SpaceService Bug: Replaces merged space with backend response ❌
- Result: Space has empty
universeIds→ no universes loaded
Evidence from Logs
[11:20:42.586] [SpaceService] 🔍 Syncing merged universeIds to backend...
└─ beforeSync: [1 items] ✅ We send 1 universe ID
[SpaceApiService] ✅ Space updated: 69067c087ebb621cd9ff8c3f
✅ Backend says "updated successfully"
[11:20:42.728] [SpaceService] 🔍 Backend returned after sync:
└─ returnedUniverseIds: [0 items] ❌ Backend returns EMPTY array!
returnedCount: 0
sentCount: 1
Then the buggy code did:
space = syncedSpace; // ❌ Replaced space with backend response (empty universeIds!)
✅ The Fix
Frontend Fix (Immediate - Applied)
File: libs/core-angular/src/lib/services/space.service.ts
// ✅ CRITICAL FIX: Backend might not return universeIds in response
// Only update fields that backend actually manages, preserve our universeIds
if (!syncedSpace.universeIds || syncedSpace.universeIds.length === 0) {
this.logger.warn('[SpaceService] ⚠️ Backend returned empty universeIds, keeping local merged version');
// Keep the merged space we already have, just update timestamp
space.updatedAt = syncedSpace.updatedAt || new Date().toISOString();
} else {
// Backend returned universeIds, use them
space = syncedSpace;
}
What This Does:
- Detects when backend returns empty
universeIds - Keeps the merged local version (which has the correct IDs)
- Only updates timestamp from backend
- Logs a warning so we know backend needs fixing
Backend Fix (Required - TODO)
Backend Issue: The space update endpoint is not returning universeIds in the response.
Backend File: backend/routes/spaces.ts (or similar)
What Needs Fixing:
// Current (buggy):
router.put('/spaces/:spaceId', async (req, res) => {
const { universeIds, ...updates } = req.body;
await Space.findByIdAndUpdate(req.params.spaceId, { ...updates });
const space = await Space.findById(req.params.spaceId); // ❌ Doesn't include universeIds?
res.json(space);
});
// Should be:
router.put('/spaces/:spaceId', async (req, res) => {
const { universeIds, ...updates } = req.body;
await Space.findByIdAndUpdate(
req.params.spaceId,
{ ...updates, universeIds }, // ✅ Include universeIds
{ new: true } // ✅ Return updated document
);
const space = await Space.findById(req.params.spaceId)
.select('+universeIds'); // ✅ Ensure field is included
res.json(space);
});
Or check if universeIds is excluded from the Space model schema or select statement.
🧪 Testing the Fix
Step 1: Clear and Test
# In browser console
clearCachedSpaceData()
# Refresh page
Step 2: Create Universe
- Navigate to:
/chrome-space-1/dashboard - Click "Create Universe"
- Fill: "Test Persist Final"
- Create universe
- Navigate to Space Map (should see universe)
Step 3: Refresh Test (Critical!)
- Press F5 to refresh page
- Watch console - Look for:
⚠️ Backend returned empty universeIds, keeping local merged version - Navigate to Dashboard
- Universe should still be there! ✅
Step 4: Navigate Test
- Navigate away and back multiple times
- Universe should persist ✅
📊 Expected Log Output (After Fix)
On Page Refresh:
[SpaceService] 🔍 Merging validated universeIds from local storage:
mergedIds: ["universe_xxx"]
[SpaceService] 🔍 Syncing merged universeIds to backend...
beforeSync: [1 items]
[SpaceApiService] ✅ Space updated: xxx
[SpaceService] 🔍 Backend returned after sync:
returnedUniverseIds: []
returnedCount: 0
sentCount: 1
[SpaceService] ⚠️ Backend returned empty universeIds, keeping local merged version
[SpaceService] ✅ Merged universeIds synced to backend
[SpaceService] 🔍 Loading universes for space:
universeIds: ["universe_xxx"] ✅ Has IDs!
universeCount: 1
[SpaceService] 🔍 Checking universe from storage:
found: true
[SpaceService] 🔍 Validating universe:
willBeIncluded: true
[SpaceService] ✅ Universe INCLUDED: Test Persist Final
[SpaceService] Loaded universes:
total: 1 ✅ Universe loaded!
🎯 Impact
Before Fix:
- Universe created ✅
- Navigate away → Universe visible ✅
- Refresh page → Universe disappears ❌
- User loses data ❌
After Fix:
- Universe created ✅
- Navigate away → Universe visible ✅
- Refresh page → Universe still there ✅
- Data persists correctly ✅
🔧 Additional Notes
Why Backend Returns Empty universeIds
Possible reasons:
- MongoDB Schema:
universeIdsfield not included in model - Select Statement: Backend explicitly excludes
universeIds - Update Logic:
findByIdAndUpdatenot configured correctly - Projection: Response projection filters out
universeIds
Diagnostic Command
Run in console anytime:
debugUniverseStorage()
This shows:
- All universes in storage
- Their spaceIds
- Validation status
- Current space's universeIds
