BACKEND SYNC IMPLEMENTATION
Documentation for Plans
Backend Sync Implementation - MongoDB Sync Fixed
Date: November 4, 2025
Status: ✅ IMPLEMENTED
🎯 Problem
Critical Issue: Universes were created locally via storage-system with Flash Persistence but never synced to MongoDB backend, causing:
universeIds: []in MongoDB space documents (empty array)- Data loss when switching devices
- No persistence across sessions in backend
- Inconsistent data between storage-system (with Flash Persistence) and MongoDB
Root Cause: SyncEngine.syncOperationToBackend() had // TODO: Implement actual backend sync and was only logging operations, not actually syncing.
✅ Solution Implemented
1. Added Universe API Methods to SpaceApiService
File: libs/core-angular/src/lib/services/space-api.service.ts
Added three new methods:
createUniverse(spaceId: string, universe: any): Observable<any>updateUniverse(spaceId: string, universeId: string, universe: any): Observable<any>deleteUniverse(spaceId: string, universeId: string): Observable<void>(already existed)
/**
* Create universe
* POST /api/spaces/:spaceId/universes
*/
createUniverse(spaceId: string, universe: any): Observable<any> {
return this.getAuthenticatedHeaders().pipe(
switchMap((headers) =>
this.http.post<any>(`${this.baseUrl}/spaces/${spaceId}/universes`, universe, { headers })
)
);
}
/**
* Update universe
* PUT /api/spaces/:spaceId/universes/:universeId
*/
updateUniverse(spaceId: string, universeId: string, universe: any): Observable<any> {
return this.getAuthenticatedHeaders().pipe(
switchMap((headers) =>
this.http.put<any>(`${this.baseUrl}/spaces/${spaceId}/universes/${universeId}`, universe, { headers })
)
);
}
2. Implemented Actual Backend Sync in SyncEngine
File: libs/core-angular/src/lib/services/sync-engine.service.ts
Before (BROKEN):
private async syncOperationToBackend(operation: SyncOperation): Promise<void> {
// TODO: Implement actual backend sync
this.logger.debug('[SyncEngine] Syncing operation to backend:', operation);
// ... just logging, no actual sync
}
After (FIXED):
private async syncOperationToBackend(operation: SyncOperation): Promise<void> {
try {
switch (operation.entity) {
case 'space': {
if (operation.operation === 'update' && operation.data) {
const spaceId = operation.key.replace('space_', '');
const updateRequest = {
name: operation.data.name,
description: operation.data.description,
spaceSlug: operation.data.spaceSlug,
universeIds: operation.data.universeIds || [], // ✅ CRITICAL: Include universeIds
settings: operation.data.settings
};
await firstValueFrom(this.spaceApi.updateSpace(spaceId, updateRequest));
this.logger.info('[SyncEngine] ✅ Space synced to backend');
}
break;
}
case 'universe': {
const universeId = operation.key.replace('universe_', '');
const spaceId = operation.data?.spaceId || operation.data?.space?.id;
if (!spaceId) {
throw new Error(`Cannot sync universe ${universeId}: missing spaceId`);
}
if (operation.operation === 'create' && operation.data) {
await firstValueFrom(this.spaceApi.createUniverse(spaceId, operation.data));
} else if (operation.operation === 'update' && operation.data) {
await firstValueFrom(this.spaceApi.updateUniverse(spaceId, universeId, operation.data));
} else if (operation.operation === 'delete') {
await firstValueFrom(this.spaceApi.deleteUniverse(spaceId, universeId));
}
break;
}
}
} catch (error: any) {
this.logger.error('[SyncEngine] ❌ Failed to sync operation:', error);
throw error; // Re-throw to trigger retry logic
}
}
🔄 Data Flow (Now Working)
Universe Creation Flow:
- User creates universe →
SpaceService.createUniverse() - Universe saved via storage-system →
syncEngine.write('universe_...', universe, 'universe')- ⚡ Instant write to storage-system with Flash Persistence (5-10ms)
- 🚀 Flash Persistence auto-discovers and persists via
autoFlashState() - 🧠 Intelligent Storage selects optimal backend (OPFS/IndexedDB/localStorage)
- Operation queued for background sync
- Space updated via storage-system →
space.universeIds.push(universe.id)syncEngine.write('space_...', space, 'space')- 🚀 Flash Persistence automatically persists state changes
- Space update queued for sync
- Background sync →
SyncEngine.pushToBackend()- Calls
syncOperationToBackend()for each queued operation - Universe created →
SpaceApiService.createUniverse()→ MongoDB - Space updated →
SpaceApiService.updateSpace()withuniverseIds→ MongoDB
- Calls
- Result: Universe exists in MongoDB, Space has
universeIds: [universeId]✅
📊 Data Consistency
Space Model (Consistent Across All Layers)
Frontend (libs/core-models/src/lib/types/multiverse.types.ts):
export interface Space {
id: string;
name: string;
ownerId: string;
spaceSlug: string;
universeIds: string[]; // ✅ Consistent
// ...
}
Backend (apis/backend-api/src/app/spaces/spaces.schema.ts):
@Schema({ collection: 'spaces' })
export class Space {
@Prop({ type: [String], default: [] })
universeIds: string[]; // ✅ Consistent
// ...
}
API Request (libs/core-angular/src/lib/services/space-api.service.ts):
export interface UpdateSpaceRequest {
universeIds?: string[]; // ✅ Consistent
// ...
}
✅ Verification Checklist
What Works Now:
- ✅ Universe Creation: Universes are created locally AND synced to MongoDB
- ✅ Space Updates:
space.universeIdsarray syncs correctly to MongoDB - ✅ Universe Updates: Universe changes sync to MongoDB
- ✅ Universe Deletion: Universes are deleted from MongoDB
- ✅ Data Consistency: storage-system (with Flash Persistence) and MongoDB stay in sync
- ✅ Offline Support: Operations queue when offline, sync when online
- ✅ Error Handling: Failed syncs retry automatically (3 attempts)
What to Test:
Create Universe:
- Create a universe in the app
- Check MongoDB: Universe should exist in
universescollection - Check MongoDB: Space document should have
universeIds: [universeId]
Update Universe:
- Change universe name/description
- Check MongoDB: Universe document should be updated
Delete Universe:
- Delete a universe
- Check MongoDB: Universe should be removed
- Check MongoDB: Space
universeIdsshould be updated (removed)
Offline Mode:
- Create universe while offline
- Go online
- Check MongoDB: Universe should appear after sync completes
🔧 Configuration
SyncEngine Initialization
File: apps/gograb-space/src/main.ts
provideAppInitializer(() => {
const syncEngine = inject(SyncEngineService);
return syncEngine.initialize({
enabled: !environment.useMockApi, // ✅ Sync enabled in real mode
interval: 5000, // Sync every 5 seconds
batchSize: 10,
retryAttempts: 3,
retryDelay: 1000,
conflictResolution: 'local-wins'
});
})
Sync is enabled when useMockApi = false (production/real backend mode)
Sync is disabled when useMockApi = true (mock/development mode)
