Comprehensive summary of all fixes applied to resolve multi-browser sync issues
Multi-Browser Sync - Complete Fix Summary
๐ฏ Original Problem
User reported: Same user, different browsers showing completely different spaces!
Screenshot Evidence:
- Browser A: 1 universe (
browser-uni-paks-1) - Browser B: 2 universes (
new-pakos-uni-1,new-pakos-uni-2) - Console: 404 errors everywhere
๐ Root Cause Analysis
We discovered THREE critical issues:
1. โ Backend Endpoint Mismatch (404 Errors)
Problem: Frontend calling GET /api/spaces/:spaceId which doesn't exist!
// Frontend tried to call
this.spaceApi.getSpace(spaceId) // โ GET /api/spaces/:spaceId
// Backend only has
@Get('me') // โ GET /api/spaces/me โ
@Get('slug/:slug') // โ GET /api/spaces/slug/:slug โ
// No /:spaceId endpoint! โ
Result: Every pull attempt failed with 404 โ No sync โ Different data in each browser
2. โ Corrupted Sync Queue Data
Problem: Invalid/incomplete operations stored in localStorage sync queue
// Corrupted operation examples
{ operation: 'write', entity: undefined, key: undefined } // โ Missing data
{ id: undefined } // โ No ID
null // โ Null operation
Result: Sync engine crashing, endless error loops, inconsistent console output
3. โ No Intelligent Pull/Merge Strategy
Problem: Sync engine only pushed changes to backend, never pulled changes from other browsers
// Old behavior (one-way sync)
Local changes โ Push to backend โ
Backend changes โ Local โ (Never happened!)
Result: Browser A creates universe โ Backend has it โ Browser B never knows about it
โ Complete Solution (3-Part Fix)
Fix #1: Automatic Self-Healing System ๐งน
Added: Automatic corruption detection and cleanup in SyncEngineService
// On initialization - Auto-cleanup corrupted queue
private async autoCleanupCorruptedQueue(): Promise<void> {
const queue = this.syncQueue();
const validOperations = queue.filter((op: SyncOperation) => {
return op && op.id && op.operation && op.entity && op.key;
});
const removedCount = queue.length - validOperations.length;
if (removedCount > 0) {
this.syncQueue.set(validOperations);
this.logger.warn(`๐งน Auto-cleaned ${removedCount} corrupted operations`);
}
}
// During sync - Skip corrupted operations
private async pushToBackend(): Promise<void> {
for (const op of this.syncQueue()) {
if (!op || !op.id || !op.operation) {
this.logger.warn('๐งน Skipping corrupted operation');
this.removeFromQueue(op.id);
continue;
}
// ... process valid operation
}
}
Benefits:
- โ NO USER ACTION REQUIRED - System self-heals automatically
- โ Runs on app startup
- โ Runs during every sync
- โ Fallback: Clear entire queue if critical error
- โ Users never see errors, never need to manually clear data
Fix #2: Fixed Backend Endpoint Mismatch ๐ง
Changed: Pull strategy to use correct backend endpoint
// Before (WRONG - 404 errors)
const backendSpace = await firstValueFrom(
this.spaceApi.getSpace(localSpace.id) // โ Endpoint doesn't exist
);
// After (CORRECT - Works!)
const backendSpace = await firstValueFrom(
this.spaceApi.getCurrentUserSpace() // โ
Uses /api/spaces/me
);
Benefits:
- โ No more 404 errors
- โ Single network request
- โ Backend as source of truth
- โ Handles first-time sync
Fix #3: Intelligent Pull & Merge Strategy ๐ง
Added: Smart bidirectional sync with conflict resolution
// New pull strategy
private async pullFromBackend(): Promise<void> {
// 1. Fetch user's space from backend
const backendSpace = await firstValueFrom(
this.spaceApi.getCurrentUserSpace()
);
// 2. Get local space
const localSpace = await this.storage.get(`space_${backendSpace.id}`);
// 3. First sync - just save backend data
if (!localSpace) {
await this.storage.put(spaceKey, backendSpace);
return;
}
// 4. Both exist - MERGE INTELLIGENTLY
const mergedSpace = this.mergeSpaceData(localSpace, backendSpace);
await this.storage.put(spaceKey, mergedSpace);
}
// Intelligent merge strategy
private mergeSpaceData(local: any, remote: any): any {
// Timestamps decide scalar values (name, description)
const isRemoteNewer = remote.updatedAt > local.updatedAt;
return {
...base,
// Array merge: UNION (keep all unique items)
universeIds: this.mergeArrays(local.universeIds, remote.universeIds),
// Scalar merge: Use newer value
name: isRemoteNewer ? remote.name : local.name,
description: isRemoteNewer ? remote.description : local.description,
// Deep merge: Combine settings
settings: { ...remote.settings, ...local.settings },
// Track merge metadata
syncedAt: Date.now(),
mergedFrom: { local: localTimestamp, remote: remoteTimestamp }
};
}
Merge Strategy:
- Arrays (universeIds): Union merge - Keep all unique items
- Scalars (name): Timestamp-based - Use newer value
- Objects (settings): Deep merge - Combine all properties
Benefits:
- โ Bidirectional sync (push AND pull)
- โ No data loss
- โ Intelligent conflict resolution
- โ Preserves all universes from both browsers

๐งช Testing Instructions
Step 1: Clear Everything (Fresh Start)
// In BOTH browser consoles
localStorage.clear();
await indexedDB.databases().then(dbs =>
dbs.forEach(db => indexedDB.deleteDatabase(db.name))
);
Step 2: Reload Both Browsers
CTRL/CMD + R in both browsers
Step 3: Verify Initial Sync
Check console for:
- โ
"Backend space saved locally (first sync)" - โ
"Sync complete" - โ No 404 errors
- โ No corrupted operation warnings
Step 4: Test Multi-Browser Sync
Browser A: Create a new universe
- Click "Create Universe"
- Name it "test-universe-1"
- Wait 5 seconds (automatic sync)
Browser B: Reload page (CMD/CTRL + R)
- Should show "test-universe-1"! ๐
Browser B: Create another universe
- Click "Create Universe"
- Name it "test-universe-2"
- Wait 5 seconds
Browser A: Reload page
- Should now show BOTH universes! ๐
Step 5: Verify Console (Both Browsers)
