Enhanced Corruption Detection - Unrecoverable Data Validation
Advanced 3-stage validation to detect and remove unrecoverable corrupted operations
Enhanced Corruption Detection - Unrecoverable Data Validation
๐ฏ Problem: Endless Retry Loops
User reported that sync was failing with:
[SyncEngine] ๐งน Skipping corrupted operation (auto-removed)
[SyncEngine] โ Sync failed
[SyncEngine] ๐ค Pushing 2 operations to backend
Issue: Operations with missing critical data (like universe without spaceId) were:
- โ
Passing basic validation (had
id,operation,entity,key) - โ Failing when trying to sync (missing
dataorspaceId) - ๐ Getting retried forever (because error was "recoverable")
- โ Never being removed from queue
Result: Sync appears to work but keeps failing on the same corrupted operations
โ Solution: 3-Stage Validation System
Stage 1: Basic Structure Validation โ
Already existed - Validates core operation fields
if (!operation || !operation.id || !operation.operation || !operation.entity || !operation.key) {
this.logger.warn('[SyncEngine] ๐งน Skipping corrupted operation (missing required fields)');
this.syncQueue.update(q => q.filter(op => op !== operation));
continue; // Remove immediately
}
Checks:
- โ Operation exists (not null/undefined)
- โ
Has
id - โ
Has
operation(create/update/delete) - โ
Has
entity(space/universe/widget) - โ
Has
key(storage key)
Stage 2: Entity-Specific Data Validation ๐
NEW - Validates required data for each entity type
let isUnrecoverablelyCorrupted = false;
// Universe operations REQUIRE data and spaceId
if (operation.entity === 'universe') {
if (!operation.data || typeof operation.data !== 'object') {
this.logger.warn('[SyncEngine] ๐งน Removing unrecoverably corrupted universe operation (no data)');
isUnrecoverablelyCorrupted = true;
} else if (operation.operation !== 'delete') {
// Create/Update require spaceId
const spaceId = operation.data?.spaceId || operation.data?.space?.id;
if (!spaceId) {
this.logger.warn('[SyncEngine] ๐งน Removing unrecoverably corrupted universe operation (no spaceId)');
isUnrecoverablelyCorrupted = true;
}
}
}
// Space update operations REQUIRE data
else if (operation.entity === 'space' && operation.operation === 'update') {
if (!operation.data || typeof operation.data !== 'object') {
this.logger.warn('[SyncEngine] ๐งน Removing unrecoverably corrupted space operation (no data)');
isUnrecoverablelyCorrupted = true;
}
}
// Remove immediately (no retry!)
if (isUnrecoverablelyCorrupted) {
this.syncQueue.update(q => q.filter(op => op.id !== operation.id));
continue;
}
Checks:
- โ
Universe Create/Update: Has
dataobject +spaceId - โ
Universe Delete: Only requires
key(spaceId extracted if needed) - โ
Space Update: Has
dataobject - โ Space Create: Handled separately
- โ
Space Delete: Only requires
key
Key Insight: Operations missing required data are unrecoverable - they will never succeed no matter how many times we retry!
Stage 3: Sync Attempt ๐
Enhanced - Try to sync with better error context
try {
await this.syncOperationToBackend(operation);
// Remove from queue on success
this.syncQueue.update(q => q.filter(op => op.id !== operation.id));
} catch (error) {
// Retry logic for RECOVERABLE errors (network, etc.)
if (operation.retries < config.retryAttempts) {
// Increment retry counter
this.syncQueue.update(q => q.map(op =>
op.id === operation.id ? { ...op, retries: op.retries + 1 } : op
));
} else {
// Max retries reached - remove from queue
this.logger.error('[SyncEngine] Max retries reached, removing from queue');
this.syncQueue.update(q => q.filter(op => op.id !== operation.id));
}
}
Handles:
- โ Network errors: Retry with backoff
- โ Backend errors: Retry with backoff
- โ Max retries: Remove after N attempts
- โ Success: Remove immediately
๐ฏ Corruption Classification
Unrecoverable Corruption (Remove Immediately)
| Condition | Entity | Why Unrecoverable |
|---|---|---|
No data |
Universe | Cannot create/update without payload |
No spaceId |
Universe | Cannot associate with parent space |
No data |
Space (update) | Cannot update without payload |
| Missing core fields | Any | Structural corruption |
Action: Remove immediately, no retry
Recoverable Errors (Retry with Backoff)
| Condition | Cause | Why Recoverable |
|---|---|---|
| Network timeout | Connection | May work on retry |
| 500 Backend error | Server issue | May work on retry |
| Rate limiting | Too many requests | Will work after delay |
| Authentication expired | Token refresh needed | Will work after re-auth |
Action: Retry up to config.retryAttempts times

๐งช Testing Scenarios
Scenario 1: Universe Without spaceId
// Corrupted operation in queue
{
id: "op-123",
operation: "create",
entity: "universe",
key: "universe_abc",
data: {
// Missing spaceId!
name: "My Universe",
description: "Test"
}
}
// Result: REMOVED immediately (Stage 2 validation)
Scenario 2: Universe Without Data
// Corrupted operation in queue
{
id: "op-456",
operation: "update",
entity: "universe",
key: "universe_xyz",
data: undefined // No data!
}
// Result: REMOVED immediately (Stage 2 validation)
Scenario 3: Valid Universe with Network Error
// Valid operation
{
id: "op-789",
operation: "create",
entity: "universe",
key: "universe_123",
data: {
spaceId: "space_abc", โ
name: "Valid Universe",
description: "Test"
}
}
// Network fails โ RETRIED (Stage 3 recoverable error)
// Retries: 1, 2, 3 โ Eventually succeeds or removed after max retries
โ Expected Console Output
