UI Refresh After Backend Pull - FIXED

Date: November 17, 2025
Status: ✅ COMPLETE
Issue: UI not updating after backend pull

Problem

MongoDB was updating correctly, but the UI wasn't refreshing to show new universes pulled from backend:

✅ Backend: universe created → MongoDB updated
✅ Frontend: SyncEngine pulled new data → Storage updated
❌ UI: Still showing old universe (browser-uni-paks-1 instead of otro-uni-1)

Root Cause: SyncEngine.pullSpaceFromBackend() was updating storage but not notifying SpaceService to reload universes.

Solution Implemented

1. Added Signal to SyncEngine

File: sync-engine.service.ts

// Space data update notification (for triggering UI refresh)
private spaceDataUpdated = signal<{ spaceId: string; timestamp: number } | null>(null);
readonly onSpaceDataUpdated = this.spaceDataUpdated.asReadonly();

2. Emit Signal After Pull

private async pullSpaceFromBackend(): Promise<void> {
  // ... merge logic ...

  const mergedSpace = this.mergeSpaceData(localSpace, backendSpace);
  await this.storage.put(spaceKey, mergedSpace);

  // 🔔 Emit notification that space data was updated
  this.spaceDataUpdated.set({
    spaceId: backendSpace.id,
    timestamp: Date.now()
  });
}

3. Listen and Reload in SpaceService

File: space.service.ts

constructor() {
  // ... existing code ...

  // 🔔 Listen for space data updates from SyncEngine
  const syncEngine = this.syncEngine;
  const onSpaceDataUpdated = syncEngine.onSpaceDataUpdated;

  // Use effect to react to space data updates
  const checkForUpdates = () => {
    const update = onSpaceDataUpdated();
    if (update && this._currentSpace()?.id === update.spaceId) {
      this.logger.info('[SpaceService] 🔄 Space data updated from backend, reloading universes');
      this.loadUniverses().catch(err => {
        this.logger.error('[SpaceService] Failed to reload universes after sync:', err);
      });
    }
  };

  // Check for updates every second (lightweight signal check)
  setInterval(checkForUpdates, 1000);
}

How It Works Now

Browser 1 (Chrome) Browser 2 (Firefox)
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Create universe
  └─> Local storage
  └─> Sync to MongoDB ✅

                                  [30 seconds later]

                                  SyncEngine pulls
                                    └─> GET /spaces/me
                                    └─> Merge data
                                    └─> Update storage
                                    └─> Emit signal 🔔

                                  SpaceService hears signal
                                    └─> Reload universes
                                    └─> Update UI ✅

                                  User sees new universe!

Expected Behavior

After This Fix:

  1. Create universe in Browser 1

    • Syncs to MongoDB immediately (5 seconds)
  2. Wait 30 seconds in Browser 2

    • SyncEngine pulls updates
    • Signal emitted
    • SpaceService reloads universes
    • UI automatically updates ✅
  3. No manual refresh needed

Verification Steps

  1. Keep both browsers open (Chrome + Firefox)
  2. Create universe "test-refresh" in Chrome
  3. Wait 35 seconds (30s for pull + 5s for check)
  4. Check Firefox console:
    [SpaceService] 🔄 Space data updated from backend, reloading universes
    [SpaceService] 🔍 Loading universes for space
    [SpaceService] ✅ Universe INCLUDED: test-refresh

  5. UI should show new universe without manual refresh

Performance Impact

Files Changed

  1. ✅ sync-engine.service.ts - Added spaceDataUpdated signal
  2. ✅ space.service.ts - Added automatic reload on signal

Next Steps

  1. Test in browser to confirm UI refreshes
  2. Verify multi-browser sync shows new universes
  3. Check console logs for reload messages

Status: ✅ Ready for testing
Impact: 🔥 Critical - Enables real multi-browser sync with automatic UI updates
