Session 12.15 - Hierarchy & UX Improvements

Overview

Fixed multiple UX issues related to widget hierarchy management and implemented a new "Hierarchy Connector Mode" for improved user experience when nesting widgets.

Issues Fixed

1. Widget Tree Duplication Bug ✅

Problem: The Widget Tree was showing all widgets at the root level, causing child widgets to appear twice:

Root Cause: The filteredWidgets computed signal in widget-tree.component.ts was returning ALL widgets from the widgets() array without filtering by parentId.

Solution: Added filter to only show top-level widgets (without parentId) at the root level:

readonly filteredWidgets = computed(() => {
  // 🎯 CRITICAL: Only show top-level widgets (no parentId) at root
  // Child widgets are already in the parent's children array
  let widgets = this.widgets().filter(w => !w.parentId);

  console.log('[WidgetTree] 🌲 Top-level widgets for tree:', widgets.length, '/', this.widgets().length);

  // ... rest of filters
  return widgets;
});

Result: Widget Tree now correctly shows hierarchy:

2. Canvas Rendering Duplication ✅

Problem: When assigning a parent to a widget via the Properties Panel, the widget appeared twice:

Root Cause: The canvas template was rendering ALL widgets from the widgets() array, including child widgets that should only be rendered by their parent containers.

Solution: Added topLevelWidgets computed signal in editor-canvas.component.ts:

// 🎯 Computed: Only top-level widgets (no parentId) - child widgets are rendered by their containers
readonly topLevelWidgets = computed(() => {
  const allWidgets = this.widgets();
  const topLevel = allWidgets.filter(w => !w.parentId);
  console.log('[Canvas] 🎯 Top-level widgets:', topLevel.length, '/', allWidgets.length);
  return topLevel;
});

Updated canvas template to use topLevelWidgets():

<!-- Widgets (Top-Level Only - children rendered by container widgets) -->
@for (widget of topLevelWidgets(); track trackByWidgetId($index, widget)) {
  <!-- ... -->
}

Result: Widgets are now rendered in the correct location only:

New Feature: Hierarchy Connector Mode 🔗

Overview

Implemented a visual, click-based mode for assigning parent containers to widgets. This provides a better UX alternative to the dropdown selector, especially for users on mobile devices or those who prefer visual interaction.

How It Works

  1. Activation: User clicks the "Visual Connect" button in the Properties Panel → Hierarchy section
  2. Visual Feedback:
    • Button changes to green with pulsing animation
    • Text changes to "Click container to connect..."
    • Hint updates to guide user
  3. Interaction: User clicks any container on the canvas to assign it as the parent
  4. Auto-Deactivation: Mode automatically deactivates after assignment

Implementation Details

1. Properties Panel Component

File: libs/libs-ui/editor-ui/src/lib/components/properties-panel/properties-panel-new.component.ts

Added:

// 🔗 Hierarchy Connector Mode
protected readonly hierarchyConnectorMode = signal<boolean>(false);
@Output() hierarchyConnectorModeChange = new EventEmitter<boolean>();

/**
 * 🔗 Toggle Hierarchy Connector Mode
 * Activates visual mode for clicking containers to assign as parent
 */
toggleHierarchyConnectorMode(): void {
  const newMode = !this.hierarchyConnectorMode();
  this.hierarchyConnectorMode.set(newMode);
  this.hierarchyConnectorModeChange.emit(newMode);
  console.log('[PropertiesPanel] 🔗 Hierarchy Connector Mode:', newMode ? 'ACTIVATED' : 'DEACTIVATED');
}

2. UI Button

Template Section:

<!-- 🔗 Visual Hierarchy Connector Button -->
<button
  type="button"
  class="hierarchy-connector-btn"
  [class.active]="hierarchyConnectorMode()"
  [disabled]="!canChangeParent() || availableContainers().length === 0"
  (click)="toggleHierarchyConnectorMode()"
  title="Click to activate visual mode - then click any container on the canvas to assign as parent"
>
  <i class="fas" [class.fa-mouse-pointer]="!hierarchyConnectorMode()" [class.fa-link]="hierarchyConnectorMode()"></i>
  @if(hierarchyConnectorMode()) {
    <span>Click container to connect...</span>
  } @else {
    <span>Visual Connect</span>
  }
</button>

3. Styling

File: libs/libs-ui/editor-ui/src/lib/components/properties-panel/properties-panel-new.component.scss

Added animated button styles:

.hierarchy-connector-btn {
  width: 100%;
  padding: 0.625rem 1rem;
  background: linear-gradient(135deg, var(--panel-accent-soft) 0%, var(--panel-accent) 100%);
  border: 2px solid var(--panel-accent);
  // ... transitions

  &.active {
    background: linear-gradient(135deg, #10b981 0%, #059669 100%);
    border-color: #059669;
    animation: pulse-connector 2s infinite;

    i {
      animation: link-pulse 1s infinite;
    }
  }
}

@keyframes pulse-connector {
  0%, 100% { box-shadow: 0 0 0 0 rgba(16, 185, 129, 0.7); }
  50% { box-shadow: 0 0 0 8px rgba(16, 185, 129, 0); }
}

4. Editor UI Integration

File: libs/libs-ui/editor-ui/src/lib/components/editor-ui/editor-ui.component.ts

Added:

readonly hierarchyConnectorMode = signal(false);

/**
 * 🔗 Handle hierarchy connector mode change
 * Enables/disables visual mode for clicking containers to assign as parent
 */
onHierarchyConnectorModeChange(isActive: boolean): void {
  this.hierarchyConnectorMode.set(isActive);
  console.log('[EditorUI] 🔗 Hierarchy Connector Mode:', isActive ? 'ACTIVATED' : 'DEACTIVATED');
}

Template Binding:

<lib-properties-panel-new
  [selectedWidgets]="selectedWidgets()"
  [editingWidget]="editingWidget()"
  (widgetChange)="onWidgetPropertiesChange($event)"
  (hierarchyConnectorModeChange)="onHierarchyConnectorModeChange($event)"
  [widgets]="widgets()"
  [widgetLayout]="widgetLayout()"
></lib-properties-panel-new>

Testing Instructions

Test 1: Widget Tree Hierarchy ✅

  1. Refresh browser (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R)
  2. Open Widgets Tree on the right panel
  3. Expected result:
    • Only "Container Widget" appears at root level
    • "Text Widget" appears nested UNDER "Container Widget"
    • NO duplicate widgets at root level

Test 2: Canvas Rendering ✅

  1. Click on the Text Widget (either on canvas or in tree)
  2. In Properties Panel → Hierarchy, change parent to "Canvas (No Parent)"
  3. Expected result:
    • Text widget moves OUT of container
    • Text widget appears on canvas as top-level
    • NO duplicate on canvas
  4. Change parent back to "Container Widget"
  5. Expected result:
    • Text widget moves BACK into container
    • Text widget disappears from canvas top-level
    • NO duplicate

Test 3: Hierarchy Connector Mode UI 🆕

  1. Select the Text Widget
  2. Open Properties Panel → Hierarchy section
  3. Look for "Visual Connect" button below the dropdown
  4. Expected:
    • Button should be visible
    • Button should have a gradient blue background
    • Icon should be fa-mouse-pointer
  5. Click "Visual Connect"
  6. Expected:
    • Button turns green with pulsing animation
    • Text changes to "Click container to connect..."
    • Hint updates to "Click any container on the canvas to set it as parent"
    • Icon animates with pulse effect
  7. Click button again to deactivate
  8. Expected:
    • Button returns to blue gradient
    • Text returns to "Visual Connect"
    • Animation stops

Key Learnings

Widget Rendering Architecture

Canvas (editor-canvas.component)
  └─ Renders: topLevelWidgets() [widgets with NO parentId]
      ├─ Text Widget 1 (parentId: undefined) ✅ Rendered by canvas
      ├─ Container Widget (parentId: undefined) ✅ Rendered by canvas
      │    └─ Renders: childWidgets [via getChildWidgets(widget.id)]
      │         └─ Text Widget 2 (parentId: container.id) ✅ Rendered by container
      └─ Button Widget (parentId: undefined) ✅ Rendered by canvas

Widget Tree (widget-tree.component)
  └─ Displays: filteredWidgets() [widgets with NO parentId]
      ├─ Container Widget
      │    └─ Displays: widget.children
      │         └─ Text Widget
      └─ Button Widget

Critical Principles

  1. Single Rendering Location: Each widget should be rendered in exactly ONE place
  2. Top-Level Filtering: Both canvas and widget tree must filter !w.parentId at root
  3. Children via Props: Containers receive children via [childWidgets] input, NOT by querying all widgets
  4. Flat Storage: All widgets stored in flat widgets[] array with parentId references
  5. Computed Filtering: Use computed signals for reactive, efficient filtering

Console Logs for Debugging

When working correctly, you should see:

[Canvas] 🎯 Top-level widgets: 1 / 2
[WidgetTree] 🌲 Top-level widgets for tree: 1 / 2
[PropertiesPanel] 🔗 Hierarchy Connector Mode: ACTIVATED
[EditorUI] 🔗 Hierarchy Connector Mode: ACTIVATED

This confirms:

User Feedback

"It did work! ... just make sure the widget-tree does not duplicate the nested and puts the children as if this was a different widget."

Status: ✅ FIXED

"I think in order to improve the UX of that Hierarchy section, we should activate a mode 'Hierarchy connector' which lets the user: 1. activates mode 2. there is a special design in the canvas 3. It can simply click which parent it wants to use"

Status: 🟡 PARTIAL - UI implemented, canvas integration pending

"AND remember, you have to still fix the drag and drop."

Status: ⏳ PENDING - Next task after connector mode completion
