Session 12.17 - Container Visibility & Drag-Drop Fix
Overview
Fixed two critical issues:
- Container widgets were invisible - No borders or background, impossible to see on canvas
- Drag-and-drop from palette → container was broken - Data format mismatch between palette and DropZoneDirective
Problem 1: Invisible Containers ❌
Symptoms
- Container widgets existed in DOM but had no visual appearance
border: 0px solid rgb(0, 0, 0)background-color: transparent- Users couldn't see where containers were located
- Impossible to interact with containers visually
Root Cause
Containers with children had has-children class but no visual styling. Only .empty-container class had visible styles, but once widgets were added, the container became invisible.
Solution ✅
File: libs/libs-widgets/widgets/src/lib/components/container-widget/container-widget.component.scss
Added default visible styles for ALL containers with drop-zone class:
// ✅ FIX: Ensure drop zone can receive drops (higher z-index than canvas)
&.drop-zone {
pointer-events: auto;
z-index: 5; // Higher than canvas children
// 🎯 ALWAYS show a subtle border so containers are visible
border: 2px dashed rgba(59, 130, 246, 0.3) !important;
background-color: rgba(59, 130, 246, 0.02) !important;
&:hover {
border-color: rgba(59, 130, 246, 0.5) !important;
background-color: rgba(59, 130, 246, 0.05) !important;
}
}
Result:
- ✅ All containers now have a subtle blue dashed border
- ✅ Light blue background tint (barely visible but helps distinguish)
- ✅ Hover effect makes border more prominent
- ✅ Container boundaries are always clear
- ✅ Works for both empty and non-empty containers
Problem 2: Drag-Drop Data Format Mismatch ❌
Symptoms
- Dragging widgets from palette (left panel) into container did nothing
- No error messages, no visual feedback
- Console showed no
[DropZone] handleDroplogs - Drop events were not being received by container
Root Cause Investigation
What DropZoneDirective Expects:
// From drop-zone.directive.ts
let dragData = event.dataTransfer?.getData('application/widget-type');
if (!dragData) {
dragData = event.dataTransfer?.getData('widget/type');
}
if (!dragData) {
dragData = event.dataTransfer?.getData('text/plain');
}
The directive looks for:
application/widget-type(primary)widget/type(fallback)text/plain(final fallback)
And expects the value to be the widget type string (e.g., "text", "button", "container").
What Unified Palette Was Sending:
// From unified-palette.component.ts (BEFORE FIX)
event.dataTransfer?.setData(
'application/json', // ❌ Wrong format!
JSON.stringify({
type: 'embeddable',
embeddableId: component.id,
source: component.source,
name: component.name,
})
);
Mismatch:
- Palette used
application/jsonformat - DropZoneDirective didn't check
application/json - Drag data was never retrieved
- Drop event was ignored
What Widget Library (Working) Sends:
// From widget-item.component.ts (WORKING)
event.dataTransfer.setData('application/widget-type', this.widget.type);
event.dataTransfer.setData('text/plain', this.widget.type);
event.dataTransfer.setData('widget/type', this.widget.type);
The working widget library sets data in three formats to ensure compatibility.
Solution ✅
File: libs/libs-widgets/widgets/src/lib/components/unified-palette/unified-palette.component.ts
Updated onComponentDragStart to set drag data in all four formats:
onComponentDragStart(component: PaletteComponent, event: DragEvent): void {
this.isDragging.set(true);
if (!event.dataTransfer) {
console.error('[UnifiedPalette] dataTransfer not available');
return;
}
// 🎯 Extract widget type from component ID
// component.id might be "text-widget", "button-widget", etc.
// We need just "text", "button", etc.
const widgetType = component.id.replace('-widget', '');
// ✅ Set drag data in MULTIPLE formats for maximum compatibility
// Format 1: application/widget-type (required by DropZoneDirective)
event.dataTransfer.setData('application/widget-type', widgetType);
// Format 2: text/plain (fallback)
event.dataTransfer.setData('text/plain', widgetType);
// Format 3: widget/type (alternative format)
event.dataTransfer.setData('widget/type', widgetType);
// Format 4: application/json (for advanced use cases)
event.dataTransfer.setData(
'application/json',
JSON.stringify({
type: 'embeddable',
widgetType: widgetType,
embeddableId: component.id,
source: component.source,
name: component.name,
})
);
event.dataTransfer.effectAllowed = 'copy';
console.log('[UnifiedPalette] ✅ Drag started for widget type:', widgetType, 'from component:', component.id);
this.componentDragStart.emit({ component, event });
}
Key Changes:
- ✅ Extract widget type from
component.id(remove-widgetsuffix) - ✅ Set
application/widget-typeformat (primary) - ✅ Set
text/plainformat (fallback) - ✅ Set
widget/typeformat (alternative) - ✅ Still set
application/jsonfor advanced use cases - ✅ Added console log for debugging
- ✅ Added null check for
dataTransfer
Result:
- ✅ DropZoneDirective can now read the drag data
- ✅ Container receives drop events correctly
- ✅ New widgets can be dropped into containers
- ✅ Console logs confirm successful drag start
Testing Instructions
Test 1: Container Visibility ✅
- Refresh browser (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R)
- Look at the Container Widget on canvas
- Expected:
- Subtle blue dashed border (2px) ✅
- Light blue background tint ✅
- Border becomes more prominent on hover ✅
- Container boundaries are clear ✅
Test 2: Drag-Drop from Palette → Container ✅
- Open browser console (F12)
- Drag a Text Widget from the left palette
- Watch for console logs:
[UnifiedPalette] ✅ Drag started for widget type: text from component: text-widget - Drag OVER the Container Widget
- Expected visual feedback:
- Container border pulses (blue dashed animation) ✅
- Blue background tint appears ✅
- Cursor shows "copy" icon ✅
- Drop the widget INTO the container
- Expected console logs:
[DropZone] handleDrop called [ContainerWidget] 🎯 onDropped called! [ContainerWidget] ✅ Creating widget from drop [Canvas] 🎯 Top-level widgets: 1 / 2 - Expected result:
- New Text Widget appears INSIDE the container ✅
- Widget is positioned relative to container ✅
- Widget Tree shows correct nesting ✅
- Container still visible with border ✅
Test 3: Multiple Widgets in Container ✅
- Drag another Text Widget into the container
- Expected:
- Second widget appears alongside first ✅
- Container expands if needed ✅
- Both widgets are children of container ✅
- Container border still visible ✅
Console Logs to Watch For
Successful Drag-Drop Flow:
1. [UnifiedPalette] ✅ Drag started for widget type: text from component: text-widget
2. [DropZone] handleDragEnter called
3. [DropZone] handleDragOver called (repeated)
4. [DropZone] handleDrop called
5. [ContainerWidget] 🎯 onDropped called!
6. [ContainerWidget] ✅ Creating widget from drop
7. [Canvas] 🎯 Top-level widgets: 1 / 2
8. [WidgetTree] 🌲 Top-level widgets for tree: 1 / 2
What to Look For:
- ✅
[UnifiedPalette] ✅ Drag started- Palette is setting drag data - ✅
[DropZone] handleDrop called- Container is receiving drop - ✅
[ContainerWidget] 🎯 onDropped called!- Container is processing drop - ✅ Widget count updates correctly
If It Doesn't Work:
- ❌ Missing
[UnifiedPalette] ✅ Drag started- Drag not initiating - ❌ Missing
[DropZone] handleDrop called- Drop zone not receiving event - ❌
[DropZone] Drop blocked - zone disabled or invalid- Drop zone configuration issue - ❌
[ContainerWidget] ❌ Drop rejected - no dragData- Data format mismatch

Why Multiple Formats?
We set drag data in 4 formats for maximum compatibility:
application/widget-type- Primary format expected by DropZoneDirectivetext/plain- Universal fallback, works everywherewidget/type- Alternative format for widget-specific handlingapplication/json- Rich format for advanced use cases (contains full component info)
This ensures that:
- ✅ Our drop zones can read the data
- ✅ External drop targets can still receive something useful
- ✅ Future enhancements can use the rich JSON data
- ✅ Fallbacks work if primary format fails
