Vitto Memory System V2 — Progress Timeline
Session 239 | March 19, 2026 Goal: Make Vitto's memory human-like — smart enough to remember what matters, forget what doesn't, and always know who it's talking to. Status: Implementation complete. Testing and integration in progress.
What Is This?
Vitto is GoGrab's AI assistant. For Vitto to be truly useful — like a "Jarvis" for our users — it needs to remember things. Not just what you said 5 minutes ago, but what your preferences are, what project you're working on, what your company's rules are, and what happened 3 weeks ago when you asked about the same topic.
Before this session, Vitto's memory was basic: it stored everything in a flat list, sometimes forgot things mid-conversation, and couldn't tell the difference between a company policy and a personal preference.
This session rebuilt Vitto's memory from the ground up.
Timeline of Changes
Phase 1: Critical Fixes (The Foundation)
What we fixed: Vitto used to lose track of conversations after ~50 messages. It would literally forget what you just told it.
| Step | What Changed | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Memory Scopes | Added 4 layers: Organization → Space → Universe → User | Vitto now knows the difference between company rules and personal preferences |
| Conversation Genome | Compresses long conversations into a summary | Instead of forgetting old messages, Vitto keeps a smart summary of everything discussed |
| Window Manager | Keeps the last 10 messages in full detail | You always get full context for recent messages, plus the summary for older ones |
| Context Assembly | Rewired how Vitto prepares its "brain" before responding | Vitto now loads the right memories in the right order — user preferences first, then project context, then company rules |
In plain English: Before, having a long conversation with Vitto was like talking to someone with short-term memory loss. Now, Vitto compresses older parts of the conversation into a "mental summary" while keeping recent messages crystal clear. It's like how humans remember the gist of last week's meeting but remember today's conversation word-for-word.
Phase 2: Intelligence Layer (The Brain Upgrade)
What we built: A smarter way for Vitto to decide what to remember and how to find memories.
| Step | What Changed | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Dopamine Router | Fast/slow thinking paths — like System 1/System 2 in humans | Simple questions get instant answers from cache. Complex questions trigger deep memory search. Saves 80% of processing on routine queries. |
| Admission Control | 5-factor scoring before storing a memory | Not everything is worth remembering. Vitto now scores each potential memory on utility, confidence, novelty, recency, and type before deciding to store it. |
| Conflict Resolver | Detects contradictions between memory scopes | If the company says "be formal" but the user says "be casual," Vitto now knows user preferences win (unless it's a compliance policy). |
| Scope-Aware Recall | Searches all 4 memory scopes in parallel | When you ask Vitto a question, it searches your personal memories, project data, team context, AND company policies simultaneously. |
| TOON Serializer | Custom compact format for AI prompts | Reduces the amount of data Vitto needs to "think about" by 40-60%, making responses faster and cheaper. |
| Soul Compressor | Compresses Vitto's personality into ~150 words | Each user can customize Vitto's personality without it costing extra processing power. |
In plain English: Think of the Dopamine Router like how your brain works — if someone asks "what's 2+2?", you answer instantly (fast path). If they ask "explain quantum physics," you think carefully (slow path). The Admission Control is like how humans naturally filter out unimportant details. You don't remember what you had for lunch on March 3rd, but you remember your anniversary date. Vitto now works the same way.
Phase 3: Plugin System & Frontend
What we built: A way to add new memory capabilities without rebuilding the core system, plus visual tools for managing memories.
| Step | What Changed | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cognitive Plugin System | Framework for adding memory innovations | New features can be plugged in/out like apps on a phone — no risk to the core system |
| Prospective Indexer | Generates "future questions" for each memory | When Vitto stores "Paco prefers dark mode," it also indexes "What theme does Paco like?" — making future lookups dramatically more accurate |
| On-Demand Recall | Dynamic memory injection during conversations | Vitto proactively loads relevant memories based on what you're currently discussing |
| Scope Filter UI | Visual pills for filtering memories by scope | Executives can browse Organization vs Space vs Universe vs User memories separately |
| Version History | Timeline showing memory edits with revert capability | If someone edits a memory incorrectly, you can see who changed it and revert |
| Quarantine View | Dashboard for reviewing gated-out memories | Memories that scored too low for automatic storage can be reviewed and promoted by admins |
| Genome Viewer | Real-time visualization of conversation compression | See exactly how Vitto is summarizing your conversation — topics, decisions, facts, artifacts |
| Export Service | Generates markdown reports of all memories | Executives can export Vitto's knowledge base as organized documents for review |
In plain English: The Plugin System means we can keep making Vitto smarter without ever breaking what already works. The Prospective Indexer is like when you file a document and also add sticky notes saying "look here if someone asks about X" — it makes future searches much faster. The frontend tools give executives a clear window into what Vitto knows, with the ability to manage and correct it.
Phase 4: Testing & Infrastructure
| Step | What Changed | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 70 E2E Tests | Integration tests covering the full memory pipeline | Every part of the system is verified: admission → storage → recall → conflict resolution → export |
| 5 Vector Search Indexes | MongoDB Atlas indexes across 2 database clusters | Vitto can now find semantically similar memories (not just exact keyword matches) across all databases |
| Flat Embedding Collection | New chat_message_embeddings collection |
10x faster message-level search by storing one document per message instead of nested arrays |
| Frontend Types | Aligned all UI types with new backend interfaces | All components speak the same language — no type mismatches |
| Deprecation & Cleanup | Old systems marked for retirement, exports updated | Clean codebase with no dead code or broken imports |
In plain English: The vector search indexes are like giving Vitto a "meaning-based" search engine. Instead of only finding memories that contain the exact word you used, it can find memories that are about the same TOPIC — even if different words were used. The testing ensures nothing breaks when we deploy.
