Phase 5: Security Hardening & Production Readiness - Handoff Document

Session: 73.9+ Date: 2026-01-29 Author: Claude Code Agent Status: Implementation Complete - Ready for Testing Handoff To: Cowork Browser Agent

Executive Summary

Phase 5 implements critical security hardening based on browser-based test results from Session 73.8. All 7 planned tasks have been implemented. This document provides everything needed for comprehensive testing and honest feedback.

Changes Implemented

Task 5.1: Message Type Whitelist Validation

File: libs/libs-ux/embeddable-bridge/src/lib/protocols/message-protocol.ts

What Changed:

Why: Previous testing showed that unknown message types like AI_MALICIOUS_REQUEST were silently accepted. This is a security risk.

Testing Required:

// Should be REJECTED with console warning
window.postMessage({
  type: 'AI_MALICIOUS_REQUEST',
  payload: { test: 'injection_attempt' },
  timestamp: Date.now()
}, '*');

// Should be ACCEPTED
window.postMessage({
  type: 'AI_PING',
  payload: {},
  timestamp: Date.now()
}, '*');

Task 5.2: Sensitive Data Log Sanitization

File: libs/libs-ux/embeddable-bridge/src/lib/protocols/security-protocol.ts

What Changed:

Integration: Both adapter services now use sanitizeForLogging() in their log() methods:

Testing Required:

// With debug: true in config
// Send auth message and check console output
// Token should appear as [REDACTED:eyJhbGci...] NOT as full token

// Check console for:
// "[Embeddable Host] Auth sent to embedded app"
// Payload should show: { accessToken: '[REDACTED]', user: {...} }

Task 5.3: Remove Wildcard Origin Fallbacks

Files:

What Changed in Host Adapter:

What Changed in Embedded Adapter:

Testing Required:

// Test 1: Configure host with iframe.src set
// Messages should use iframe origin, NOT '*'

// Test 2: Configure without iframe.src, with allowedOrigins: ['http://localhost:5300']
// Messages should use first allowed origin

// Test 3: Configure with empty allowedOrigins
// Host: should throw error on send attempt
// Embedded: should log warning, not send message

// Check Network tab - postMessage targetOrigin should NEVER be '*' after initial handshake

Task 5.4: Instance ID Format Validation

File: libs/libs-ux/embeddable-bridge/src/lib/protocols/message-protocol.ts

What Changed:

Why: URL parameters are untrusted input. Malicious instanceId values could cause issues.

Testing Required:

// Should be ACCEPTED
isValidInstanceId('host_123_abc');  // true
isValidInstanceId('my-instance-id'); // true
isValidInstanceId(null); // true (empty is allowed)

// Should be REJECTED
isValidInstanceId('a'.repeat(100));  // false (too long)
isValidInstanceId('bad<script>id');  // false (invalid chars)

// Message with invalid instanceId should be rejected
window.postMessage({
  type: 'AI_PING',
  timestamp: Date.now(),
  instanceId: '<script>alert(1)</script>'
}, '*');
// Should see: "[Embeddable Bridge] Rejected invalid instanceId format"

Task 5.5: Rate Limiting Enforcement

File: libs/libs-ux/embeddable-bridge/src/lib/protocols/security-protocol.ts

What Changed:

Testing Required:

// Create counter map
const counters = new Map();

// Configure rate limit: 10 requests per 60 seconds
const config = { maxRequests: 10, windowMs: 60000, onExceeded: 'block' };

// Make 11 requests
for (let i = 0; i < 11; i++) {
  const result = checkRateLimit(counters, 'test-key', config);
  console.log(`Request ${i + 1}:`, result);
  if (result.limited) {
    try {
      await enforceRateLimit(result);
    } catch (e) {
      console.log('Blocked:', e.message);
    }
  }
}

// Expected: Requests 1-8 = allow, 9-10 = warn, 11 = block with error

Task 5.6: Payload Schema Validators

File: libs/libs-ux/embeddable-bridge/src/lib/protocols/message-protocol.ts

What Changed:

Testing Required:

// Valid auth payload
validateAuthPayload({
  accessToken: 'token123',
  refreshToken: 'refresh456',
  user: { id: 'user1', email: '[email protected]' },
  expiresAt: Date.now() + 3600000
}); // true

// Invalid: missing accessToken
validateAuthPayload({
  refreshToken: 'refresh456'
}); // false

// Invalid: empty accessToken
validateAuthPayload({
  accessToken: ''
}); // false

// Valid drag payload
validateDragPayload({
  id: 'item1',
  type: 'widget',
  title: 'My Widget',
  sourceRect: { x: 0, y: 0, width: 100, height: 50 },
  mouseOffset: { x: 10, y: 10 }
}); // true

// Invalid: negative width
validateDragPayload({
  id: 'item1',
  type: 'widget',
  title: 'My Widget',
  sourceRect: { x: 0, y: 0, width: -100, height: 50 },
  mouseOffset: { x: 10, y: 10 }
}); // false

Task 5.7: Offline Support Integration

Files:

What Changed in main.ts:

// After bootstrap, in production:
if (environment.production && 'serviceWorker' in navigator) {
  const offlineService = appRef.injector.get(OfflineService);
  await offlineService.initialize({
    enableServiceWorker: true,
    fallbackUI: 'cached',
    enableBackgroundSync: true,
  });
}

What Changed in app.component.ts:

What Changed in project.json:

Testing Required:

# Build with service worker
nx build-full app-gograb-ai

# Verify output contains:
ls dist/apps/gograb-ai/browser/
# Should include: service-worker.js, offline.html

Browser Testing:

  1. Build production: nx build app-gograb-ai --configuration=production
  2. Build service worker: nx build-sw app-gograb-ai
  3. Serve from dist folder
  4. Open DevTools > Application > Service Workers
  5. Verify service worker is registered and active
  6. Toggle "Offline" in DevTools > Network
  7. Verify offline indicator appears
  8. Verify cached pages still load

Test Environment Setup

Host App (gograb-space)

Embedded App (gograb-ai)

Configuration

{
  "allowedOrigins": [
    "http://localhost:5300",
    "http://localhost:5200",
    "http://localhost:5010",
    "http://localhost:4200"
  ],
  "debug": true,
  "autoAck": true
}

Request for Honest Feedback

Dear Cowork Agent,

I've implemented comprehensive security hardening based on the previous test results. I need your honest, critical assessment of:

  1. Completeness: Did I miss any security concerns from the original test results?

  2. Implementation Quality: Are there edge cases or scenarios I haven't considered?

  3. Breaking Changes: Do any of these changes break existing functionality?

  4. False Positives: Does the message type whitelist incorrectly reject valid messages?

  5. Log Sanitization: Can you still debug effectively with redacted logs, or is too much information hidden?

  6. Origin Hardening: Does removing wildcard cause issues in legitimate use cases?

  7. Offline Support: Does the service worker registration work correctly? Does the offline indicator appear/disappear appropriately?

  8. Performance: Any noticeable performance degradation from the added validation?

Please be ruthlessly honest. I'd rather know about problems now than in production.

Requested Deliverable

Please create a response document at: docs/english/testing/phase5-security-test-results.md

Include:

  1. Test Results: Pass/fail for each test with details
  2. Bugs Found: Any issues discovered during testing
  3. Security Concerns: Any remaining vulnerabilities
  4. Suggested Improvements: What could be better
  5. Next Steps: Recommendations for Phase 6 or further hardening
  6. Performance Notes: Any latency or memory concerns
  7. UX Feedback: How the changes affect developer experience
