79.1 Protocol Validation Results
Sub-Session: 79.1 Status: ✅ IMPLEMENTATION COMPLETE (awaiting Cowork validation) Owner: Codebase Agent Completed: February 1, 2026
Implementation Summary
The Codebase Agent implemented the MCP JSON-RPC gateway for Claude Desktop Connector integration. This document records the protocol choices, implementation details, and decisions made.
What Was Implemented
MCP JSON-RPC Controller (
mcp-jsonrpc.controller.ts)- POST
/ai-api/mcp/jsonrpc- Main JSON-RPC 2.0 endpoint - GET
/ai-api/mcp/events- SSE event streaming endpoint - JSON-RPC method handlers:
initialize,tools/list,tools/call
- POST
Module Integration (
mcp-gateway.module.ts)- Added
McpJsonRpcControllerto module exports - Integrated with existing MCP infrastructure
- Added
Protocol Support
- Full MCP JSON-RPC 2.0 request/response format
- Standard error codes (-32600, -32601, -32602, -32603)
- SSE for real-time event streaming

Recommendations
Immediate Next Step
Cowork Agent validation required:
1. Start backend: yarn serve:backend-ai-api
2. Open Claude Desktop with Connectors beta
3. Add connector: http://localhost:3001/ai-api/mcp/jsonrpc
4. Observe what Claude Desktop sends and receives
5. Document findings in validation-observations.md
Implementation Priority
[x] Proceed to Phase 2 (MCP HTTP Gateway) - COMPLETED
[ ] Skip to Phase 3 (Agent Registration) - Awaiting validation
[ ] Investigate further - Need more information about: _______________
Decisions Made
Decision 1: Protocol Choice
- Question: What protocol should we use for Claude Desktop connector?
- Options Considered:
- REST (standard HTTP with custom JSON format)
- JSON-RPC 2.0 over HTTP
- WebSocket (bidirectional)
- Chosen: JSON-RPC 2.0 over HTTP
- Reasoning: MCP specification uses JSON-RPC 2.0 as its wire protocol. Claude Desktop Connectors likely expect this format based on MCP documentation and the server implementation patterns seen in official MCP servers.
- Confidence: High (based on MCP specification analysis)
Decision 2: Authentication Approach
- Question: How should we authenticate connector requests?
- Options Considered:
- None (localhost only)
- JWT tokens
- API Key header
- Chosen: None for localhost, API Key (
x-api-keyheader) for production - Reasoning: Simplest approach for local development and testing. The existing API key authentication already works for external access via Railway deployment. No need to add complexity for localhost connections.
- Confidence: High (proven pattern, minimal friction)
Decision 3: Event Streaming
- Question: How should we handle real-time events?
- Options Considered:
- Polling
- SSE (Server-Sent Events)
- WebSocket upgrade
- Chosen: SSE at
/ai-api/mcp/events - Reasoning: SSE is simpler than WebSocket for unidirectional server-to-client events, works over standard HTTP, and is commonly used in MCP implementations.
- Confidence: Medium-High (standard pattern, untested with Claude Desktop)
