AI Infrastructure Redesign - Foundation First

Complete architectural overhaul to fix fundamental issues before adding features

🏗️ AI Infrastructure Redesign - Foundation First

Critical Realization: We've been building features on a broken foundation.

🚨 The Wake-Up Call

User's Critical Feedback:

"185K decisions in one single JSON is absolutely ridiculous! How can we expect our agents to go through such hell every single time?"

He's 100% RIGHT. We have:

🎯 Core Problems Identified

Problem 1: Data Architecture is Broken

Current (BAD):
.cursor/ai-memory/development-memory.json (185K lines!)
├─ decision 1
├─ decision 2
├─ ... (185,574 more)
└─ decision 185,576

Loading this into context every time = INSANE

Problem 2: Not Using Existing Systems

We've built excellent systems but aren't using them:

  1. MongoDB (backend-ai-api) - Exists but underutilized
  2. Storage-system / flash-persistence - Perfect for local caching
  3. docs-angular - Documentation system we're ignoring
  4. Session tracking - docs/data/complete_session_history.json disconnected
  5. Agent types - docs/data/agent-types.json defined but not enforced

Problem 3: Context Window Limitations

Problem 4: No Configuration Layer

// Should exist but doesn't:
{
  "sessionConfig": {
    "getFeedback": true, // Ask clarifying questions
    "confidenceThreshold": 0.95, // Min confidence before acting
    "usePatterns": true, // Consult platform intelligence
    "maxContextItems": 10 // Limit loaded decisions
  }
}

Problem 5: Sessions Not in MongoDB

Current Flow (BAD):
User starts chat
  ↓
Creates session in docs/sessionID.json (local file)
  ↓
Maybe syncs to MongoDB later?
  ↓
Disconnected from MCP

Should Be:
User starts chat
  ↓
Creates session IN MongoDB (source of truth)
  ↓
Local files are CACHE
  ↓
MCP reads from MongoDB via API

🏗️ Proposed Architecture

Layer 1: MongoDB - Source of Truth

// Collection: sessions
{
  _id: ObjectId,
  sessionNumber: 9,
  sessionID: "9.1",
  startedAt: Date,
  endedAt: Date | null,
  status: "active" | "paused" | "complete",
  config: {
    getFeedback: true,
    confidenceThreshold: 0.95,
    usePatterns: true,
    maxContextItems: 10
  },
  context: {
    requiredReading: string[],
    goals: string[]
  },
  metadata: {
    agentId: "cursor-angular-agent",
    tags: ["ai-system", "infrastructure"]
  }
}

// Collection: decisions (indexed & queryable)
{
  _id: ObjectId,
  sessionNumber: 9,
  sessionID: "9.1",
  timestamp: Date,
  agentId: "cursor-angular-agent",
  type: "architecture",
  question: string,
  chosen: string,
  reasoning: string,
  confidence: 0.95,
  outcome: {
    wasSuccessful: boolean,
    rating: number,
    feedback: string
  },
  tags: string[],
  relatedFiles: string[]
}

// Collection: agent_knowledge
{
  _id: ObjectId,
  agentId: "cursor-angular-agent",
  category: "components",
  pattern: {
    name: string,
    description: string,
    example: string,
    successRate: 0.92,
    timesUsed: 47
  },
  lastUpdated: Date
}

// Indexes for fast querying:
db.decisions.createIndex({ sessionNumber: 1, timestamp: -1 })
db.decisions.createIndex({ agentId: 1, type: 1, confidence: -1 })
db.decisions.createIndex({ tags: 1 })
db.agent_knowledge.createIndex({ agentId: 1, category: 1 })

Layer 2: Flash-Persistence - Local Cache

// IndexedDB stores:
{
  "session-current": {
    sessionNumber: 9,
    sessionID: "9.1",
    config: { /* session config */ },
    cachedAt: Date
  },

  "decisions-recent": [
    // Last 50 decisions only
    // Synced from MongoDB
    // Auto-refreshed every 5 minutes
  ],

  "patterns-relevant": [
    // Only patterns relevant to current task
    // Scored by relevance
    // Max 20 patterns
  ]
}

Layer 3: MCP Configuration

// New file: .cursor/mcp-config.json
{
  "version": "1.0",
  "session": {
    "current": 9,
    "currentID": "9.1",
    "mongodbUrl": "mongodb://localhost:27017/gograb-ai",
    "syncInterval": 300000  // 5 minutes
  },

  "behavior": {
    "getFeedback": true,
    "confidenceThreshold": 0.95,
    "askClarifyingQuestions": true,
    "maxContextItems": 10,
    "usePatternLibrary": true
  },

  "agents": {
    "current": "cursor-angular-agent",
    "available": [
      "cursor-orchestrator",
      "cursor-architecture-agent",
      "cursor-angular-agent",
      "cursor-backend-agent",
      "cursor-testing-agent"
    ]
  },

  "context": {
    "maxDecisions": 10,
    "maxPatterns": 20,
    "relevanceScoring": true,
    "timeWindow": "7d" // Only load decisions from last 7 days
  }
}

Layer 4: Smart Context Loading

// New service: IntelligentContextService
class IntelligentContextService {
  /**
   * Load ONLY relevant context for current task
   * NOT the entire 185K decisions!
   */
  async getContextForTask(task: string): Promise<TaskContext> {
    // 1. Extract keywords from task
    const keywords = this.extractKeywords(task);
    const category = this.categorizeTask(task);

    // 2. Query MongoDB with filters (NOT reading entire collection!)
    const relevantDecisions = await this.db.collection('decisions').find({
      agentId: this.currentAgent,
      type: category,
      tags: { $in: keywords },
      confidence: { $gte: 0.8 },
      timestamp: { $gte: Date.now() - 7 * 24 * 60 * 60 * 1000 } // Last 7 days
    })
    .sort({ confidence: -1, timestamp: -1 })
    .limit(10)  // ONLY 10 most relevant
    .toArray();

    // 3. Query pattern library
    const relevantPatterns = await this.db.collection('agent_knowledge').find({
      agentId: this.currentAgent,
      category: category,
      'pattern.successRate': { $gte: 0.8 }
    })
    .sort({ 'pattern.successRate': -1, 'pattern.timesUsed': -1 })
    .limit(5)  // ONLY 5 best patterns
    .toArray();

    // 4. Score and rank by relevance
    const scoredContext = this.scoreRelevance(task, relevantDecisions, relevantPatterns);

    // Total context: ~15 items (not 185K!)
    return {
      decisions: scoredContext.decisions,
      patterns: scoredContext.patterns,
      totalTokens: this.estimateTokens(scoredContext),  // Should be < 5K tokens
      confidence: scoredContext.avgConfidence
    };
  }

  /**
   * Extract keywords using NLP
   */
  private extractKeywords(task: string): string[] {
    // Simple keyword extraction (can be improved with NLP)
    const words = task.toLowerCase().split(/\s+/);
    const stopWords = new Set(['the', 'a', 'an', 'is', 'it', 'to', 'of']);
    return words.filter(w => !stopWords.has(w) && w.length > 3);
  }

  /**
   * Categorize task type
   */
  private categorizeTask(task: string): DecisionType {
    const taskLower = task.toLowerCase();

    if (taskLower.includes('fix') || taskLower.includes('bug')) return 'bugfix';
    if (taskLower.includes('design') || taskLower.includes('architecture')) return 'architecture';
    if (taskLower.includes('refactor')) return 'refactor';
    if (taskLower.includes('test')) return 'testing';

    return 'implementation';
  }
}

🔄 New Flow: From Task to Decision

Step 1: User Starts Session

// User: "Improve design of component X"

// 1. Check/Create session in MongoDB
const session = await SessionService.getOrCreate({
  sessionNumber: 9,
  sessionID: "9.1",
  config: await loadMCPConfig() // From .cursor/mcp-config.json
});

// 2. Cache in flash-persistence
await flashPersistence.set('session-current', session);

Step 2: Intelligent Context Loading

// Load ONLY what's needed (not 185K decisions!)
const context = await IntelligentContextService.getContextForTask(
  "Improve design of component X"
);

// Result:
{
  decisions: [
    // 7 relevant past decisions about component design
    // Scored by relevance, sorted by confidence
  ],
  patterns: [
    // 3 proven design patterns from platform intelligence
    // With success rates and examples
  ],
  totalTokens: 3500,  // Manageable!
  confidence: 0.89
}

Step 3: Agent Decision Making

// If config.getFeedback = true && confidence < 0.95:
if (session.config.getFeedback && context.confidence < session.config.confidenceThreshold) {
  // Ask clarifying questions
  await askUser([
    "Are you looking to improve visual design or code structure?",
    "Should we follow existing patterns or create new approach?",
    "Any specific constraints or requirements?"
  ]);
}

// Make decision with loaded context
const decision = await makeDecision({
  task: "Improve design of component X",
  context: context, // Only 10-15 items
  agent: "cursor-angular-agent"
});

Step 4: Log Decision (Efficiently)

// Log to MongoDB (source of truth)
await db.collection('decisions').insertOne({
  sessionNumber: 9,
  sessionID: "9.1",
  agentId: "cursor-angular-agent",
  type: "refactor",
  question: "How to improve component X design?",
  chosen: "Use theme-system variables and glass morphism",
  reasoning: "Matches platform patterns, high success rate",
  confidence: 0.92,
  timestamp: new Date(),
  tags: ["design", "component", "theme-system"]
});

// Update flash-persistence cache
await flashPersistence.update('decisions-recent', latestDecision);

// Update .cursor/ai-memory SUMMARY only (not full log)
await updateMCPSummary(decision);

Step 5: Sync & Learn

// Background sync (every 5 minutes)
setInterval(async () => {
  // Sync decisions to MongoDB
  await syncDecisionsToMongoDB();

  // Extract patterns from successful decisions
  await extractPatternsFromDecisions();

  // Update agent knowledge
  await updateAgentKnowledge();

  // Update session progress
  await updateSessionProgress();
}, 300000);  // 5 minutes

📊 Data Size Comparison

Before (Current - BAD)

.cursor/ai-memory/development-memory.json: 185,576 lines
Load time: ~2-3 seconds
Context tokens: ~500K tokens (exceeds limit!)
Query performance: O(n) - linear scan

After (Proposed - GOOD)

MongoDB decisions collection: 185,576 documents (indexed)
Load time: ~50ms (with indexes)
Context tokens: ~5K tokens (manageable!)
Query performance: O(log n) - indexed query

Loaded per task:
- 10 relevant decisions (~2K tokens)
- 5 relevant patterns (~1K tokens)
- Session config (~500 tokens)
- Total: ~3.5K tokens (95% reduction!)

🛠️ Implementation Plan

Phase 1: MongoDB Schema & Indexes (Day 1)

  1. Create proper collections:

    • sessions
    • decisions
    • agent_knowledge
    • patterns
  2. Add indexes for performance:

    • decisions: (sessionNumber, timestamp)
    • decisions: (agentId, type, confidence)
    • decisions: (tags)
    • agent_knowledge: (agentId, category)
  3. Migrate existing data:

    • Parse .cursor/ai-memory/development-memory.json
    • Import into MongoDB with proper structure
    • Validate data integrity

Phase 2: Intelligent Context Service (Day 1-2)

  1. Build IntelligentContextService:

    • Keyword extraction
    • Task categorization

    • Auto-create session folders
    • Generate session summaries
    • Link to MongoDB records
  2. Use docs-angular for visualization:

    • Session history viewer
    • Decision timeline
    • Pattern library browser

💡 Key Insights

From User:

Strategic Decisions:

  1. MongoDB First: Source of truth, not afterthought
  2. Smart Loading: Load 10 items, not 185K
  3. Relevance Scoring: Show most useful, not everything
  4. Ask Questions: When uncertain, clarify with user
